Munnings Colt Romps to ‘TDN Rising Star’ Performance at Pimlico

Jaxon Traveler (c, 2, Munnings–Listen Boy, After Market) shot out to the front and left them all in the dust, romping to a ‘TDN Rising Star’ performance on debut at Pimlico Friday.

The even-money favorite, a $140,000 purchase by West Point Thoroughbreds and Marvin Delfiner after breezing in :10 flat at the postponed OBS April Sale, was working bullets at Steve Asmussen’s Belmont base, including a five-furlong move from the gate in :59 3/5 (1/18) Sept. 13.

The dark bay raced under pressure early, but appeared to be doing it rather easily through an opening quarter in :23.78. He began to let it out a notch approaching the quarter pole and was hand-ridden down the lane to an eye-catching 10-length victory. Lugamo (Chitu) was second.

The winner’s stakes-placed dam, also represented by a Street Boss filly of 2019, was bred to Cross Traffic for 2021. The half-sister to SW Monzon (Thunder Gulch) was purchased by Three Pines Farm for $26,000 in foal to Street Boss at the 2015 KEENOV Sale.

Unbeaten Princess Noor Headlines Chandelier

Unbeaten ‘TDN Rising Star’ Princess Noor (Not This Time) looks to punch her ticket to the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in Saturday’s ‘Win and You’re In’ GII Chandelier S. at Santa Anita.

After topping the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training at $1.35 million, she ran to the billing with a ‘Rising Star’ performance on debut for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert at Del Mar Aug. 22, then added a facile win in the seven-furlong GI Del Mar Debutante S. last time Sept. 6.

The Zedan Racing Stables colorbearer fired a five-furlong bullet in 1:00 1/5 (1/47) at Santa Anita Sept. 21 for this first two-turn test.

“She’s fast; she’s shown brilliant speed,” Baffert said. “She’s coming back a little quick, but she’s been handling everything we’ve thrown at her, so we’re looking forward to the race.”

Drawn on the fence with regular rider Victor Espinoza aboard, Princess Noor faces only four rivals here, including Baffert-trained stablemates Illumination (Medaglia d’Oro), a well-beaten third in the Debutante and maiden of two career starts; and six-furlong Aug. 30 Del Mar debut winner Varda (Distorted Humor).

Empire-bred Make Mischief (Into Mischief) makes the trip from New York for trainer Mark Casse after three straight runner-up finishes versus stakes company going one turn, most recently completing the exacta versus state-breds in the Seeking the Ante S. at Saratoga Sept. 4.

Miss Costa Rica (Hit It a Bomb) switches to dirt after a visually impressive debut score sprinting on the Del Mar lawn Aug. 28.

Lope de Vega’s La Barrosa Takes the Tattersalls

The subject of a gamble into 4-7 favouritism for Thursday’s G3 Tattersalls S. at Newmarket, Godolphin’s TDN Rising Star La Barrosa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) duly delivered with a workmanlike success to back up his debut win over this seven-furlong trip at Ascot Sept. 4. Racing behind the leaders Dark Lion (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Qaader (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) throughout, the bay had to squeeze between them coming out of the “dip” but had the gears to get to the front with half a furlong remaining en route to a length defeat of the former. “I was quite pleased to see where he was, even if William wasn’t as comfortable as me, as I knew it would help him get into a nice rhythm,” Charlie Appleby said. “James Doyle rode him at Ascot and said to make sure we park him up in behind so he doesn’t over-race. He showed bit class there and quickened up, but he’s still learning and was quite raw. I won’t be bold and say we’ll definitely throw him into a [G1] Dewhurst or something like that, but he’s a nice horse going forward and if we take the right steps with him he’ll be a nice 3-year-old.”

There is a chance that La Barrosa could be supplemented for the Oct. 10 Dewhurst according to Appleby, who added, “Coming into today, we felt we would see what kind of performance he put up whether we contemplate supplementing for a Dewhurst and from what we have seen today, it is up for discussion. I feel he has learnt again today and he is entitled to come forward a bit more. He travels very well and I wouldn’t want him to be doing it the wrong way round yet. I think seven is his trip for the moment, though I’m not saying he won’t get a mile in time. While he is learning, I think this is his right trip for the moment. This horse is a work horse, whereas [the G2 Superlative S. winner] Master of the Seas is not a work horse. Master of the Seas just goes about his work and he would go past you in the string and you wouldn’t take much notice, whereas this horse has got a bit of presence about him and spring in his step.”

Pneumatic Breezes Bullet for Preakness

‘TDN Rising Star‘ Pneumatic (Uncle Mo), last-out winner of the Aug. 15 Pegasus S. at Monmouth Park, breezed five furlongs in company in a bullet 1:00.85 over the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga Monday morning as he continues towards a start in the GI Preakness S. at Pimlico Oct. 3.

With exercise rider Angel Garcia up, Pneumatic went in fractions of :12, :23.80, :36 and galloped out three-quarters of a mile in 1:15.

“On this track, that’s about as good as horses work,” said Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen. “It was a solid five-eighths. They were out well. He’s trained really good since the Pegasus at Monmouth. Off that work we expect a big effort in the Preakness.”

Third to Maxfield (Street Sense) in the GIII Matt Winn S. May 23, Pneumatic was a well-beaten fourth behind Tiz The Law (Constitution) in the GI Belmont S. June 20. He came from just off the pace in the Pegasus to defeat Jesus’ Team (Tapiture) by 2 1/4 lengths.
