It’s ‘Jack’ on the Cutback in Jerkens

While he lost nothing in defeat when trying two turns for the first time in the GI Haskell Invitational S. the Jack Christopher (Munnings) everyone is accustom to was back at Saratoga, charging home a decisive winner of the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S.

Hammered down to 1-2 favoritism getting back around one turn, the flashy chestnut tracked Conagher (Jimmy Creed) from second through a :22.18 first quarter. Drawing alongside as the half went in :44.53, Jack Christopher skipped to the front when Jose Ortiz shook the reins at him and strode clear to win by X over last year's GI Hopeful S. winner Gunite (Gun Runner).

“Exiting the Haskell, that was going to be our plan if he didn't win and cut him back to this prestigious race here,” winning trainer Chad Brown said. “I'm just so proud of the horse. He's been a very consistent horse. He's never disappointed us in a workout or a race. Jose [Ortiz] rode another fantastic race on him. He broke sharp and used good judgment to rate him just a touch. Every pole, he was in control of the race. I'm so proud of both Jose and the horse.”

“Four weeks [rest] and he ran huge,” said winning pilot Jose Ortiz. “He gave me everything he had and a very good race. Honestly, though he was a little offbeat down the backside but at the three-eighths pole he picked up little by little and I knew when I got next to the one-horse [Conagher], I knew I got him. From then on he just kept going the same pace. I knew if he didn't stop, he was going to run them off their feet because he was running the whole way. Seven [furlongs] is a tricky distance. I'd rather go a mile but seven-eighths is tricky. The pace is a little bit faster and you have to run the whole way there and he did.”

Tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' off an ultra-impressive debut romp at this oval exactly 364 days ago, Jack Christopher followed suit with a good-looking score in Belmont's GI Champagne S. in October. The early favorite going into the Breeders' Cup, he was a late scratch by the Del Mar vets with a minor left shin issue. The $135,000 FTKOCT buy reemerged on the First Saturday in May with a facile victory in the GII Pat Day Mile and blew away the field with a 10-length demolition of Belmont's GI Wood Stephens S. June 11. Stretched to a route for the first time at Monmouth in the Haskell July 23, he gave a valiant effort and ultimately finished third.

Jack Christopher is one of five Grade I winners for Coolmore's Munnings. His dam is also represented by an

unnamed Mo Town 2-year-old filly and a Complexity filly of this year. She was bred back to Munnings. Rushin No Blushin, a maiden of eight career starts, was claimed for $50,000 out of her career finale by owner/trainer Neil Pessin at Keeneland in 2013. The half-sister to MGISW and useful sire Street Boss (Street Cry (Ire)) subsequently brought $70,000 from Castleton Lyons, in foal to Congrats, at the 2014 KEENOV sale.

‘Bright’ Start On Saturday

It's that time of year where initial promise either fizzles out or becomes the preface to something greater and early on Saturday we get to find out what 'TDN Rising Star' Bright Diamond (Ire) (El Kabeir) is made of in Goodwood's G3 William Hill Prestige Fillies' S. This is not generally one of the big 1000 Guineas pointers, but Billesdon Brook (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), Nannina (GB) (Medicean {GB}) and Gossamer (GB) (Sadler's Wells) won it this century en route to their respective tilts at the stars and there was a high-calibre feel to the debut performance of the latest Karl Burke juvenile special.

Off the mark by nine lengths over this seven-furlong trip at Newmarket Aug. 6, Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's bay recorded a rapid penultimate furlong split on that occasion and provided the slightly easier ground doesn't compromise her she could start the day with a bang for her on-fire stable.

Karl Burke has won notable domestic black-type races in 2022 with Pillow Talk (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), Dramatised (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) and Swingalong (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) from his excellent group of 2-year-old fillies and Bright Diamond's owner's assistant racing manager Philip Robinson is hoping she can continue the momentum.

“We're on a mission to find out how good she is at Goodwood,” he said of the relative of the triple Group 3 winner Realtra (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) whose rivals include Amo Racing's fellow 'Rising Star' and July 8 G3 Duchess of Cambridge S. third Queen Olly (Ire) (No Nay Never). “Obviously she was very impressive at Newmarket. We don't really know how good those were behind her, but you can't do any more than win like she did. I went up to see her and she is very very laid-back and relaxed at home, she doesn't sparkle anyway, she is just so laid-back. Everyone is guessing and I don't think Karl really has a clue.”

Five minutes after the Prestige, some choice Irish juvenile fillies are on display in The Curragh's G3 Newtownanner Stud Irish EBF S. with yet another of the No Nay Never crew carrying great expectations in Marc Detampel and Michael Buckley's Caroline Street.

Already successful over this mile trip at Leopardstown July 14, the Joseph O'Brien trainee had Ballydoyle's Library (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) well-beaten in third and that peer boosted the form by winning impressively at Tipperary on Friday evening. Also in the mix for this race known as the Flame of Tara which was won last year by the eventual Irish Oaks heroine Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is the Rosegreen representative Maybe Just Maybe (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}), who also beat Library at Leopardstown Aug. 11 and who is back just a week after finishing fourth to Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) in the G2 Debutante S. here.

In the proceeding G3 Heider Family Stables Round Tower S., another Aidan O'Brien-trained filly backs up quickly in Sunday's Naas maiden winner Dower House (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), with the full-sister to Churchill (Ire) and Clemmie (Ire) up against Juddmonte's 'Rising Star' Apricot Twist (Ire) (Expert Eye {GB}) who has to prove her disappointing effort in Naas's Irish EBF Ballyhane S. at the start of the month all wrong.

Select Affairs At Goodwood

Small field sizes are firmly established at every level in Britain now and Goodwood's other two black-type races, the G2 William Hill Celebration Mile and G3 William Hill March S., have attracted a disappointing nine runners between them and not much in the way of excitement. Best of them is the Derby runner-up Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}), who looks to book his St Leger ticket in the March, while the Celebration Mile, which can be a stallion-maker, has only one who can fit that bill in Shadwell's nearly-horse Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). It is a measure of the renewal's quality that the son of Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway) may not even have to improve on his narrow defeat by Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in Ascot's G2 Summer Mile to take this race which badly needs another Poet's Voice (GB) or Raven's Pass but isn't going to get one this year.

Speightstown Colt From Family of Newgate Supplemented to Keeneland September

A Speightstown half-brother to Grade II winner My Majestic Rose (Majestic Warrior) from the family of impressive 2022 juvenile maiden winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Newgate (Into Mischief) has been supplemented to the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and is scheduled to sell Sept. 12 on opening day of Book 1 as hip 182. St George Sales, agent, consigns the colt, who is out of the winning Pleasant Tap mare Victory On Tap. He also is from the family of Canadian Grade III winner Victress (Include). Victory On Tap is a half-sister to Majestic Presence (Majestic Warrior), the graded stakes-placed dam of Newgate, who won his career debut by 3 1/2 lengths July 30 at Del Mar.

Dams of Nest, Mo Donegal Entered In Book 1 at Keeneland November

Marion Ravenwood (A.P. Indy), dam of multiple Grade I-winning sophomore filly Nest (Curlin); and Callingmissbrown (Pulpit), dam of Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo)–who beat his stablemate Nest in this year's GI Belmont S.–have been entered in Keeneland's November Breeding Stock Sale to sell on opening day, Nov. 7, during Book 1. Marion Ravenwood is carrying a full-sibling to Nest, while Callingmissbrown is carrying a full to the Belmont winner, who also took the GII Remsen S. last year and GII Wood Memorial S. in April. Ashview Farm, agent, will consign both mares.

“These two mares represent active families competing at the highest level of racing,” Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy said. “Nest is responsible for some of the most dominating performances of the season, prevailing in [last] Saturday's GI Alabama at Saratoga by 4 1/4 lengths. The fact that Mo Donegal and Nest ran 1-2 in the Belmont speaks to their quality. We are proud that both Nest and Mo Donegal are graduates of Keeneland's September Yearling Sale and excited to offer their dams, who are carrying full siblings to these Grade I winners, at the November Sale.”

Marion Ravenwood also is the dam of 2021 GI Santa Anita H. winner Idol (Curlin), who set Churchill Downs' 1 3/16-mile track record in 2020; and Lost Ark (Violence), a 5 1/2-length maiden winner in his career debut in July at Belmont. Lost Ark is entered in Saturday's Sapling S. at Monmouth Park.

Callingmissbrown also is the dam of the impressive 2-year-old 'TDN Rising Star' filly Prank (Into Mischief), who earned a 91 Beyer Speed Figure in her career debut at Saratoga last month.
