Notable US-Breds in Japan: July 24, 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hakodate and Niigata Racecourses:

1st-HAK, ¥9,680,000 ($88k), Maiden, 2yo, 1800mT
FIFTY CHEVY (c, 2, Tapit–Stopchargingmaria, by Tale of the Cat), a debut fourth going this distance at Tokyo June 13 (video, gate 2), attracted a final bid of $825K last fall at Keeneland September from Yuji Hasegawa, the same owner who gave $1.5 million for Vanishing Point, a full-brother to two-time Eclipse Award winner Unique Bella, at the same auction 12 months prior. Winner of the 2014 GI CCA Oaks and GI Alabama S. for owner Mike Repole, Stopchargingmaria was a $3.15-million buyback at that year's FTKNOV sale before being purchased privately by Louise and Kiki Courtelis' Town and Country Farms. Upset winner of the 2015 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff, the mare remained in training through her 5-year-old season and was knocked down to Three Chimneys for $2.8 million at FTKNOV in 2016. She was most recently acquired by Whisper Hill Farm for $4.4 million with this foal in utero at the 2018 FTKNOV sale. Three-year-old filly Stillchargingmaria (Pioneerof the Nile), a $1.9-million graduate of FTKNOV and her dam's first produce, won her maiden at Lone Star Park this past April. 5th-HAK, ¥13,400,000 ($122k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1700m
POISON ARROW (c, 2, Arrogate–Crosswinds, by Storm Cat) fetched $750K at last year's Keeneland September sale, making him the most expensive of 41 of the late stallion (by Unbridled's Song)'s first-crop yearlings to sell (from 59 through the ring) in 2020. The Mar. 31 foal is a half-brother to $725K KEESEP grad Current (Curlin), a Grade III winner on turf as a juvenile, and to Weep No More (Mineshaft), who upset the 2016 GI Central Bank Ashland S. The chestnut's granddam is Juddmonte's Flute (Seattle Slew), winner of the 2001 GI Kentucky Oaks and GI Alabama S. and subsequently the dam of Filimbi (Mizzen Mast), a Grade III winner and four times placed in Grade I company on the grass. “We were really happy when he was so well accepted,” Hinkle Farms' Henry Hinkle told the TDN's Brian DiDonato after the colt's sale. “We got a lot of compliments on him. He's one of the nicest colts we've ever brought up here to sell.” Filimbi is also responsible for a member of Arrogate's first crop, the 2-year-old colt Calloway Peak, who is in training at Saratoga. 6th-NII, ¥13,400,000 ($122k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200m
FUJIN SHOJO (f, 2, Speightstown–Big Raven {Ire}, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}), a $235K KEESEP acquisition, is sadly the lone produce of her dam, a daughter of GSW Devil By Design (Medaglia d'Oro), who produced GISW Competitionofideas to the cover of Speightstown in 2015. The progeny of the WinStar stallion have long been coveted in Japan, as he is the sire to date of 33 winners from 37 starters, including GISW mare Mozu Superflare; Matera Sky, a Group 3 winner at home, runner-up in the 2019 G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen and twice an unlucky loser of the Saudi Sprint; and three additional black-type winners. Catalog Released For 100th Saratoga Sale

A total of 210 yearlings by many of the world's top stallions have been cataloged for the 100th renewal of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, to be held Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 9 and 10, in Saratoga Springs, NY. Evening sessions begin each night at 6:30 p.m.

The Saratoga Sale is the first major North American yearling sale to be held as many as 100 times. The boutique event was canceled last summer owing to the COVID-19 outbreak, marking the first time since World War II that the sale had not been held.

To commemorate the 100th Saratoga Sale, this year's catalogue includes a fold out timeline that outlines major events in the sale's history, as well as a gallery of the sale's most prominent graduates through the years.

“We are returning to Saratoga in style this year, as we celebrate the sale of a century, the 100th Saratoga Sale,” said Fasig-Tipton President and CEO Boyd Browning, Jr. “For 100 years, Saratoga has produced breed-shapers, champions, classic winners, and international stars.  This year's catalogue is outstanding, offering the type of quality that has drawn buyers to Saratoga in search of the sport's very best for a century.”

Those buyers, who will take a break from racing across Union Avenue, will have the cream of the crop of established stallions from which to choose. The irrepressible Into Mischief has 19 cataloged, including a colt out of of 2016 GI Test S. heroine Paola Queen (Flatter). Among 15 in the catalog for the outstanding Uncle Mo is a May-foaled son of GISW Dame Dorothy (Bernardini), the dam of 'TDN Rising Star' Spice Is Nice (Curlin), while a half-dozen by perennial leading sire Tapit includes a half-sister to the undefeated and stakes-bound Carribean Caper (Speightstown). Other top stallions with yearlings on offer include the young progeny of American Pharoah, Candy Ride (Arg), Curlin, Distorted Humor, Ghostzapper, leading freshman sire Gun Runner, Medaglia d'Oro, Munnings, Nyquist, Practical Joke, Quality Road, Street Sense and War Front.

Approximately a quarter of the Saratoga catalog is comprised of freshman yearling sires, many of which performed well during the New Sire Showcase at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Sale in Lexington July 13. Triple Crown hero Justify (Scat Daddy) has 14 cataloged, including siblings to fellow freshman sire Tapwrit (Tapit) and 'Rising Star' and recently GSP Inject (Frosted), GI Kentucky Oaks winner Princess of Sylmar (Majestic Warrior), as well as a New York-bred son of GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint upsetter Bar of Gold (Medaglia d'Oro). Bolt d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) has a baker's dozen set to go through the ring, while other freshmen include Army Mule (Friesan Fire); City of Light (Quality Road); Good Magic (Curlin); Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy); Oscar Performance (Kitten's Joy); and West Coast (Flatter).

“Recent graduates like Grade I winners Known Agenda, Valnaince, Flagstaff and current undefeated 3-year-old colt ['TDN Rising Star'] First Captain are carrying on the century long tradition of Saratoga Sale quality,” continued Browning. “We look forward to welcoming buyers and sellers back to our historic sales grounds this August as we offer the next generation of racing's stars.”

Champion Essential Quality To Target Saratoga’s Jim Dandy On July 31

Champion juvenile and this year's Belmont Stakes winner Essential Quality is expected to make his next start in the Grade 3 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga on July 31, reports the Daily Racing Form. The 3-year-old son of Tapit had his first work at Saratoga on Saturday, July 10, breezing a half mile over the main track in a steady 50.44 seconds.

“For his first move over the track, I thought it went well,” trainer Brad Cox told DRF. “He broke off slowly. I had 13-and-2 for his first eighth, and picked it up a little down the lane. It was good for him by himself. He's pretty easy on himself, he doesn't overdo it and never has. It was very similar to his first work back, by himself, after the Belmont at Churchill. I thought he skipped over the track well. He's super happy. He was rearing up after his bath, making me think I should have done a little more with him.”

Cox hopes to use the Jim Dandy as a springboard to the Grade 1 Travers Stakes on Aug. 28 at the Spa. Essential Quality, only defeated once in his career when fourth after a troubled trip in the Kentucky Derby, could face the top three finishers from the Ohio Derby (Masqueparade, King Fury, and Keepmeinmind), Weyburn, Risk Taking, and one of trainer Todd Pletcher's top 3-year-olds in the Jim Dandy.

Royally-Bred Pauline’s Pearl Tabbed Morning-Line Favorite For Iowa Oaks

Sired by Tapit and out of the Grade 1 winner Hot Dixie Chick, Stonestreet homebred Pauline's Pearl has been tabbed as the 2-1 morning line favorite for Friday's Grade 3, $250,000 Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows Racetrack in Altoona, Ia. The 3-year-old filly, trained by Steve Asmussen, won the G3 Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn before finishing eighth in the G1 Kentucky Oaks.

A close second choice on the morning line at 5-2 is G2 Black-Eyed Susan winner Army Wife, trained by Mike Maker. The Declaration of War filly will break from the rail under top jockey Joel Rosario.

Winner of the listed Busanda Stakes in January, The Grass is Blue also ships west for trainer Bill Mott. The Broken Vow filly most recently finished sixth in the Black-Eyed Susan.
