Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Named Official Aftercare Partner Of 2021 Breeders’ Cup

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is the Official Aftercare Partner of the 2021 Breeders' Cup World Championships Nov. 5-6 at Del Mar. The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is also an Official Charity of the Breeders' Cup, along with aftercare partner California Retirement Management Account (CARMA).

During the World Championships, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will present its Grade 2 namesake race, formerly the Marathon Stakes. In addition, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance has partnered with TVG to be a part of the TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile presented by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1), the feature race on Future Stars Friday Nov. 5.

“We are delighted that the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance has joined with us again as our official aftercare partner of the World Championships, and by continuing their sponsorship of the Grade 2 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes,” said Dora Delgado, Breeders' Cup Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Officer. “As a foundation supporter, Breeders' Cup salutes the exemplary work of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance in approving aftercare organizations in the retraining and rehoming of Thoroughbreds following their racing careers.”

“It's a privilege to have the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance partnered with the TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile again,” said Andrew Moore, Vice President Racing TVG/FanDuel Group. “The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance does tremendous work and racehorse aftercare is a very important cause to the TVG team and all our viewers.”

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will have a presence on-site at Del Mar alongside CARMA. CARMA works with all 11 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance-accredited organizations in the state of California to safely transition horses from California racetracks into the next phase of their lives.

As a seed money donor, the Breeders' Cup has been a supporter of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance since inception.

Pimlico Hosts Canter For a Cause

Over 260 riders and their mounts from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and farther afield cantered, walked and trotted across Pimlico Race Course Sunday, to raise awareness and money for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) as part of Canter for a Cause. The event, sponsored by the Maryland Jockey Club, saw registered riders go out in one of four groups between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to take their horse around Pimlico, as well as walk through the starting gate and get their picture taken in the winner's circle.

“The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is honored to be the charity of choice for Canter for a Cause once again,” said Stacie Clark Rogers, operations consultant for TAA. “It's always so great to see so many people eager to support accredited Thoroughbred aftercare and have some fun while doing it. Thank you to 1/ST for hosting the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and for all that they do for our horses.”

New Vocations Launches 12th Annual Breeders’ Cup Pledge

New Vocations has launched its 12th annual Breeders' Cup Pledge, in which connections of Breeders' Cup contenders pledge a percentage of their Championship earnings to support the charity's mission to rehabilitate, retrain and rehome retired racehorses. To date, the pledge has raised over $800,000 to support the nation's oldest and largest racehorse adoption program.

“This event has become one of our most important annual fundraisers,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations Thoroughbred Program Director. “Providing proper aftercare for these amazing athletes is a must, and we have been very blessed to have so many owners and trainers come together during these exciting races to pledge their support for New Vocations efforts.”

Despite the challenges brought on by COVID-19, last year's pledge raised a record-breaking $150,000. Over 50 Championship contenders had owners and/or trainers who pledged a percentage of their Breeders' Cup earnings, with Authentic (Classic), Monomoy Girl (Distaff), Order of Australia (Mile), Whitmore (Sprint), Gamine (Filly and Mare Sprint), Aunt Pearl (Juvenile Fillies Turf) and Fire At Will (Juvenile Turf) emerging victorious in their Championship races.

“In 2020, at the end of a challenging year, we were very grateful for the generous support from our long-time and new pledgers alike,” Ford said. “We're excited to watch the pledge flourish this year as it has in the past, and we can't wait to welcome even more pledgers to our family as we raise the much-needed funds that ultimately help retired Thoroughbreds transition into new homes, careers and purposes.”

Pimlico Plans ‘Canter For A Cause’ To Benefit Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance

Legendary Pimlico Race Course will once again play host to the popular Canter for a Cause Sunday, Oct. 10, giving the public an opportunity to walk, trot, canter or gallop their favorite horse or pony on the same track that has hosted legends like Seabiscuit and Secretariat.

Sponsored by the Maryland Jockey Club, Canter for a Cause is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is $50 per trip, with proceeds going to benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.

Entries will be taken in four groups – Seabiscuit (walk, trot, canter and gallop), Secretariat (walk, trot and slow canter), War Admiral (walk and trot) and Ben's Cat (leadline). Groups will run every 30 minutes and have 20 to 25 minutes apiece on the track. Participants will also have their picture taken in the winner's circle.

All horses must have proof of a negative Coggins test within 12 months. All riders must sign a waiver and wear approved helmets, and riders under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. No colts, geldings or stallions are allowed.

Pimlico is the second-oldest racetrack in the country, opened in 1870. Known as Old Hilltop and home of the Preakness Stakes (G1), Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown, Pimlico has seen such stars as War Admiral, Affirmed, Curlin, Rachel Alexandra, Gallorette and Smarty Jones race over its main track.
