Liam’s Map’s Beau Liam Brilliant Again at the Spa

8th-Saratoga, $105,000, Alw (NW2$X)/Opt. Clm ($80,000), 8-29, 3yo/up, 6 1/2f, 1:15.05, ft, 6 lengths.
BEAU LIAM (c, 3, Liam's Map–Belle of Perintown {GSW, $265,465}, by Dehere) showed Sunday just how well-stocked the Steve Asmussen barn is with top sprinters, as he zipped away to his third win from as many tries as day after stablemates Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) and Yaupon (Uncle Mo) annexed the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S. and GI Forego S., respectively. A shoe-in for 'TDN Rising Star'-dom off a 7 1/2-length debut drubbing at Churchill May 29, the bay was even-money in one of the toughest first-level allowances here in recent memory July 17, and out-nosed promising Chad Brown pupil Witsel (Nyquist) to earn a gaudy 106 Beyer Speed Figure. Looking like lock on paper here, the 2-5 favorite was pursued by Night Time (Majesticperfection) through swift splits of :22.14 and :44.92. Asked to quicken after straightening for home, Beau Liam hit another gear and quickly scampered away from his competition to air by six lengths. The victory was the third straight on the card for Ricardo Santana, Jr., who also rode both of Asmussen's Grade I winners Saturday, along with his GI Runhappy Travers S. runner-up Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow). Asmussen trained Liam's Map's first two Grade I winners, Basin and Wicked Whisper, and was represented on Friday at Monmouth by the very impressive debut-winning turf sprinter  Cheeky Chaps (Liam's Map). The winner is half to Tomlin (Distorted Humor), MSW & MGSP, $251,895; and Strike It Rich (Unbridled's Song), GSW, $193,966, plus unraced 2-year-old filly Ari Oakley (Gun Runner) and a yearling filly by Good Magic. Strike It Rich's New York-bred son Sea Foam (Medaglia d'Oro) took the Evan Shipman H. here by five lengths earlier this month. Sales history: $385,000 RNA Ylg '19 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 3-3-0-0, $171,888. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Caddo River Out of Derby

Shortleaf Stable's 'TDN Rising Star' Caddo River (Hard Spun) will not make the line-up for Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby after spiking a fever over the weekend.

“We noticed he was off his feed and took his temperature yesterday afternoon. It was slightly elevated,” trainer Brad Cox said. “It's just really bad timing being this close to the Derby. We drew blood on him [Sunday] morning and his white cell counts were a little high. We just can't run him on Saturday with being a little off his game.”

The defection of the GI Arkansas Derby runner-up will allow GII Remsen S. winner Brooklyn Strong (Wicked Strong) to enter the Derby field. The Mark Schwartz colorbearer, most recently fifth in the Apr. 3 GII Wood Memorial, is scheduled to work at Parx Monday morning for trainer Daniel Velazquez and could ship into Churchill Downs Tuesday morning if all goes well.

After sending his Derby quartet out to jog Sunday morning, trainer Todd Pletcher announced a Derby rider for Sainthood (Mshawish). The GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks runner-up will be ridden next Saturday by Corey Lanerie.

“We know how well Corey rides Churchill,” Pletcher said. “That was the key element in giving him the mount. We're thinking along the lines that we did with [2010 Derby winner] Super Saver and Calvin Borel. [Borel] rode this track so well and that earned him the mount then.”

Lanerie has ridden in the Derby four times with his best finish a runner-up effort aboard Lookin At Lee (Lookin at Lucky) in 2017.

Hronis Racing and Talla Racing's unbeaten GI Santa Anita Derby winner Rock Your World  (Candy Ride {Arg}) and Roadrunner Racing, Boat Racing and Strauss Bros Racing's GII Louisiana Derby winner Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) arrived at Churchill Downs shortly after noon Sunday following a flight from Southern California.

Trainer Steve Asmussen sent out his GI Kentucky Oaks contenders to work under the Twin Spires Sunday. Stonestreet Stables' homebreds Pauline's Pearl (Tapit) and Clairiere (Curlin) completed their final Oaks preparations both working four furlongs over a “good” main track in a pair of maintenance solo drills.

GIII Fantasy S. Pauline's Pearl worked immediately after the track opened for Derby and Oaks horses at 7:30 and went in :50.60, with splits of :13 and :25.40 under exercise rider Wilson Fabian.

GII Rachel Alexandra S. winner Clairiere followed about a minute behind under Angel Garcia and went in :49.60, with splits of :11.80, :23.80, while galloping out in 1:03.40.

Pauline's Pearl was credited with the 22nd fastest time of 27 at the distance, while Clairiere was 10th fastest. Just over an hour later, Asmussen was beaming back Barn 38.

“We're ecstatic,” Asmussen said. “Pauline's Pearl went first and my first words to Wilson were 'How did she go?' and he said, 'Beautiful.' Both are regular riders of the horses so they are good measures and extremely familiar with them.”

Charlatan Nears Return to Training

TDN Rising Star Charlatan (Speightstown), a Triple Crown candidate earlier in the season before being sidelined by injury, is expected to return to training soon, according to Starlight Racing’s Jack Wolf, who campaigns the sophomore in partnership with SF Racing, Madaket Stables and Stonestreet Stables. After detecting some filling to the front ankle following a June 1 workout [five furlongs in 1:00.80] at Santa Anita, Bob Baffert confirmed that the colt would get 45 days off after an MRI revealed chips which required minor surgery.

“He’s doing really well,” said Wolf. “[The Baffert barn] sent us a video of Charlatan on the backside at Del Mar the other day and he looks fantastic right now. Bob’s comment was ‘Too bad he won’t be running in the [Kentucky] Derby.’ The horse is the real deal, for sure. He hadn’t had a breeze, but the plan is to start him back in a week to 10 days.”

Charlatan won his first two career starts at Santa Anita, including a front-running 10 1/4-length romp Mar. 14. Heavily favored in the second division of the May 2 GI Arkansas Derby, the colt cruised home a six-length winner over Basin (Liam’s Map), but was subsequently demoted to ninth after testing positive for lidocaine, a Class 2 drug, following the race.

Earlier in the season, Baffert had mentioned the GI Preakness  S. was a outside possibility, however, the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic seemed a more realistic late-season goal for the Stonestreet-bred colt.

Wolf added, “I doubt he would be ready for the Preakness, but sometimes these horses can surprise you at how quickly they come back.”

TDN Rising Star Cazadero takes the GIII Bashford Manor

Stonestreet Stables homebred Cazadero made good on his ‘TDN Rising Star’ tag with a dominant victory in the GIII Bashford Manor S. at Churchill Downs Saturday. Demolishing the field by 8 3/4 lengths in his five-panel unveiling beneath the Twin Spires May 29, the Steve Asmussen pupil was heavily favored to repeat in this first juvenile graded stakes of the season. Breaking sharply, Cazadero tracked from a two-wide fourth as longshot County Final (Oxbow) blazed through a :21.24 first quarter. Ranging up two wide on the far turn, the bay took charge in mid-stretch and powered clear under a vigorous hand ride from Ricardo Santana to win as he pleased.

“He’s been a very fast horse in his training and handled everything very well today,” said conditioner Steve Asmussen.

“He was a later foal but we knew he was wickedly fast,” said Stonestreet principal Barbara Banke. “He grew up on our farm and has showed that speed in his two starts.”

Pedigree Notes:

Cazadero is the 32nd graded winner and 69th black-type scorer for champion Street Sense. He is bred on the same Street Sense/Forest Wildcat cross as Grade I victress Callback. Barbara Banke’s operation purchased the winner’s MGSW & GISP dam Wild Gams for $1-million at the 2008 KEENOV Sale. She is also the dam of SW Mt. Brave (Malibu Moon) and GSP Almost Famous (Unbridled’s Song). Wild Gams did not produce a foal in 2019, but had a Good Magic colt Mar. 2 of this year.
