Constitution Tops WinStar Stallion Roster for 2024

Constitution (Tapit), the leading sire of 2-year-olds of 2023 whose progeny were highly coveted at auction this summer, will stand the 2024 breeding season for $110,000, stands-and-nurses terms, as WinStar Farm.

The 12-year-old is responsible for new fewer than 18 juvenile winners this season, led by Aspenite, impressive winner of the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile last month. The sire's current crop of yearlings proved extremely popular at the recently concluded Keeneland September Sale, with five horses sold in excess of $750,000, including a colt out of Solo Uno (Medaglia d'Oro), who was purchased by OXO Equine for $1.3 million. A son of Dothraki Sea (Union Rags) was hammered down to Mayberry Farm for $1.25 million at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale.

Life Is Good (Into Mischief), who covered a first book 192 mares this past season, will stand his second year at WinStar for $85,000 S&N, while perennial leading sire Speightstown (Gone West) will cover mares at $80,000. Outwork (Uncle Mo), sire of leading juvenile filly and the GI Darley Alcibiades S.-bound Brightwork, will stand for $10,000.

New additions to the WinStar roster include G1 Dubai World Cup hero Country Grammer (Tonalist, $10,000) and GSW and GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Two Phil's (Hard Spun, $12,500).

Stud fees for Audible and Always Dreaming, recently represented by GI Pennsylvania Derby winner Saudi Crown, will be determined based on the results of the coming months.

“We are very excited about our roster for 2024,” said Elliott Walden, president, CEO, and racing manager of WinStar Farm. “Constitution's 2-year-olds have him exactly where we thought he would be, and Life is Good is coming off a very promising start. We have four stallions–Improbable, Tom's d'Etat, Global Campaign, and Promises Fulfilled–whose progeny hit the track next year, and give a breeder a very nice upside if they are willing to take a chance. I have had top horsemen tell me they think Two Phil's is the best 3-year-old in the country, and he is priced right. Country Grammer's record speaks for itself. Our team can't wait to get started.”

General Partner Stakes his Claim of the Saratoga Winner’s Enclosure

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In his second career start Saturday, General Partner (Speightstown) was really ready for prime time at Saratoga Race Course.

While it wasn't exactly a led-from-gate-to-wire performance, General Partner was in front quickly under Manny Franco. He was never seriously challenged and won the seven-furlong maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds a solid four lengths in front of the favorite Dive Bomber (Omaha Beach). Klaravich Stables's chestnut colt reached the wire in 1:22.33.

General Partner debuted for trainer Chad Brown at six furlongs on July 22 and after being prominent early ended up fourth, beaten 2 ¾ lengths.

“We really liked the horse first time out and in hindsight when he came back from running I could see how hard he was blowing. I ran him a couple of works short,” Brown said. “I was eager to run him because he had so much ability and I actually jumped the gun a little bit putting him in.”

With Klaravich owner Seth Klarman watching, General Partner broke his maiden with a flashy performance.

“It all worked out in the end,” Brown said, “because he got a race that he needed and got the last bit of fitness that he needed for a race rather than a couple more works and we were able to run him back at the meet and be successful today.”

General Partner, out of the Distorted Humor mare Fleeting Humor, was bred by Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey and the Speightstown Syndicate. He paid $9.30 as the second choice in the wagering.

Brown said he expected General Partner to be on the lead, but not in the way that the race unfolded. He came out of Post 3 a step slow and appeared to brush with the horse to his inside.

“He didn't break that well and Manny made a key decision to go up in the lead,” Brown said. “I'm not sure I actually would have done that when he broke bad because he looked like he was going to be in a nice, cozy stalking spot. Manny used excellent judgement. That was really the difference in the race. He kept him clean the whole way.”

General Partner and Franco turned in split times of 22.74, 45.92 and 1:09.87. Without any real pressure, they got the final eighth in 12.46.

While Brown said a stake might be General Partner's next start, he did not commit to a specific race.

“There's been some really good-looking maidens this meet – I've been very impressed – that aren't mine,” he said.  “When you look at a horse like this, you look at a race like the (GI) Champagne S. This year, when you say that, you better know that if these horses all stay healthy this is going to be a real race if some of them end up there. This is not a meet where there's been like one Jack Christopher (Munnings) debut or something like that. There's been a handful of ones I can just think of right now that have been super-impressive to my eye. I'm just happy to have one of them.”

GENERAL PARTNER (c, 2, Speightstown–Fleeting Humor, by Distorted Humor) finished fourth in what was a loaded maiden special contest July 22 behind well-met Valentine Candy (Justify) but ahead of returning rival Dive Bomber (Omaha Beach), who was crowned the 8-5 favorite between the two. Jostled at the start by an inner horse coming out, he recovered quickly to set a pressured pace from the public's choice to his outside and had taken firm command six furlongs out. Tucking closer to the rail though the bend and bracing for a pair of challengers, he straightened for home with a clear lead heading passed the eighth pole. Despite moving out late from the left hand stick, General Partner came home four lengths best over Dive Bomber. A half-sibling to a fleet of accomplished runners including  Seventhfleethumor (Afleet Alex), GSP, $133,785; Naughty Joker (Into Mischief), SW, $176,403; and Cathedral Reader (Shackleford), SP, $174,795, the victor is the first to the races after a couple years of poor breeding fortunes for the mare. Baffert Firster Has Things Down To A ‘T’: A 40th Rising Star for Into Mischief

WinStar Farm and Siena Farm's Pastor T (c, 2, Into Mischief–Top Quality, by Quality Road) covered stacks of ground from a wide draw, but overcame the tough trip to graduate by 4 1/4 impressive lengths to be named the afternoon's second 'TDN Rising Star', the 40th of the all-conquering Into Mischief's sons and daughters to be accorded such honors.

The colt's worktab–both at Santa Anita and over the local strip–didn't so much whisper 'ready' as much as it screamed it and the bay was duly dispatched as a 2-5 mortal to open his account for a barn that strikes with nearly three of every 10 firsters. Drawn eight of eight, Pastor T was one of the first to break the line, but several others were equally smartly away meaning that the heavy favorite was trapped out off the track through an opening quarter-mile in a strong :21.79. Ridden along three furlongs out, Pastor T commenced his wide rally and was more or less on even terms with second-timer I Win Again (Speightstown) at the quarter pole. Juan Hernandez threw his mount over onto his right lead at the furlong grounds and Pastor T took care of the rest, gliding home an easy winner.

A $280,000 Keeneland September yearling, Top Quality–a full-sister to SW Boston Post Road–was a three-time stakes winner in the Pacific Northwest and in British Columbia and was hammered down to WinStar for $335,000 at Keeneland January in 2019. She was mated with the late More Than Ready as a maiden mare, and the results were positive, as American Speed gained black-type with a runner-up effort in this year's Leonatus S. at Turfway Park for these connections. The yearling full-sister to Pastor T was bought back on a bid of $725,000 at this week's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, and Top Quality produced an Uncle Mo colt this term before visiting Justify.

The cross of Into Mischief over Quality Road is now responsible for four winners from five starters. Three of Into Mischief's 17 Grade I winners are out of mares sired by Gone West-line stallions (Authentic, Mia Mischief, Mischievous Alex) and that same cross is found in an additional four of Into Mischief's graded winners.

Saturday Insights: Coast-To-Coast Maiden Action Kicks Off Whitney Saturday

2nd-SAR, $136K, Msw, 2yo, 6f, 1:07 p.m.

The action kicks off with a heavily-loaded maiden race on the Whitney undercard Saturday. A quartet of colts, all first-time starters, take to the dirt led by the inside draw BE YOU (Curlin), the first of a pair of starters for Todd Pletcher. Out of the graded-stakes winning mare Jacaranda, herself a $2,000,000 purchase by this colt's breeder Alpha Delta, Be You already has a stakes-placed full-sister in American West, a $925,000 Keeneland yearling herself. Jacaranda is out of the Distorted Humor mare Baffled, making her a half-sister to MGISW and leading sire Constitituion (Tapit) as well as GSW Boynton (More Than Ready). Further back in the family you'll find GISW Emcee (Unbridled's Song) and G1SP Surfer (Distorted Humor).

Pletcher's second starter, Locked (Gun Runner), brought $425,000 as a yearling at Keeneland last year. He is out of a half to MGSW Always a Princess (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) and MGISW Gabby's Golden Girl (Medaglia d'Oro).

Splitting the pair is Claude McGaughy runner Pentathlon (Speightstown), a Phipps Stable homebred who hails from the family of MGISW My Flag, the dam of champion 2-year-old filly Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat).

Last of the quarter and the widest drawn of the four, Creek (Ghostzapper) will look to get trainer Bill Mott's day off to a winning start. The colt is out of a half to GSW/GISP Great Island (Scat Daddy) and to the dam of GSW Surprisingly (Mastery). Third dam Matlacha Pass also produced MGISW and sire Point of Entry (Dynaformer) and MGISW Pine Island (Arch). TJCIS PPS

On the West Coast, Dagger Ranch (Curlin) will look to be the latest winner out of dual Eclipse champion Indian Blessing. The Bob Baffert trainee is already a half-brother to GISP Ten Blessings (Smart Strike) and draws the outside gate under Hall of Fame jockey Victor Espinoza.

Breaking from gate three is another son of Curlin for Bob Baffert in Mission Beach, a $400,000 Keeneland September yearling who is out of a full-sister to GISW Taris, the dam of GSW King Fury (Curlin). He put up a best-of-53 work at five furlongs July 24, going from the gate in :58 4/5. TJCIS PPS

Opening the Saturday card at the Spa, Agate Road (Quality Road), bred by China Horse Club, was a $650,000 pick up by the prolific connections of Repole Stable and St Elias Stable for trainer Todd Pletcher. Out of GI Frizette S. winner Yellow Agate, already the dam of a pair of winners, the colt traces back to GSW/MG1SP Without Connexion (Ire) (Rainbow Quest). TJCIS PPS

11th-SAR, $149.5K, Alw, 3yo/up, 7f, 6:16 p.m.

Carded right after the Whitney, this race features the return of not one but two 'TDN Rising Stars' both racing for Claude McGaughey. Drawn further to the inside is Signator (Tapit), a $1.7m OBS April pick up last seen breaking his maiden at Belmont's Aqueduct meeting last Oct. Racing with Lasix for the first time, the grey hails from the family of champion 3-year-old filly Heavenly Prize (Seeking the Gold).

Lined up to his outside, Capture the Flag (Quality Road) earned his 'Star' tag at first asking with a three-length maiden win at this meet just over a year ago but hasn't raced since. This colt, a half to GSW Personal Best (Tapit), is out of a full-sister to Hong Kong's champion stayer Lines of Battle. His third dam also produced MGSW and late leading sire Dynaformer (Roberto). 3rd-MTH, $55K, Msw, 2yo, f, 1mT, 1:36 p.m.

Drawn furthest outside, Spendalot (More Than Ready) lived up to her name with a $650,000 purchase price as a yearling at Keeneland last Fall. She is a full-sister to Chad Brown's Consumer Spending who took last month's GIII Matchmaker S. over this same track.

And all the way to the rail is Madame Mischief (Into Mischief), a $550,000 OBS March grad who checked in second while sprinting five furlongs on the grass July 2. Her dam is a half-sister to MGISW and sire Divisidero (Kitten's Joy). TJCIS PPS
