South Point’s Saratoga Consignment Forges on in Recio’s Honor

Mike Recio's broad smile may not be on display at Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga Sale, but he will be well represented by his South Point Sales team as they forge ahead with the consignment at the summer's premiere yearling sale. While Recio continues his battle with sepsis in the ICU at Central Baptist Hospital in Kentucky, South Point sales coordinator Justina Severni and longtime team member John Fahey will pick up the torch.

“These are some of the best yearlings South Point Sales has ever sold,” Severni said. “We are going to help Mike and his family the best way we can by selling these horses as well as we possibly can. We spoke to the owners and they were all on board, so we just want to thank them for having faith in us to do right by their horses. We are very grateful to them for sticking by us. Hopefully we have a great sale.”

South Point's Saratoga consignment is comprised of eight yearlings this year. One of the standouts based on pedigree is Hip 171, a colt by Hard Spun. The bay is out of the unraced Perfect Note (Elusive Quality), who is a daughter of MGISW Music Note (A.P. Indy) and a half-sister to G1 Dubai World Cup hero Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper) and GSW Gershwin (Distorted Humor).

“He is a PA-bred with a great physical and an amazing pedigree,” Severni said. “He is out of a half to Mystic Guide. We sold the half-brother by Nyquist last year for $510,000 at the Fasig [Yearling Showcase] Sale.”

Recio's company offers two yearlings from the first crop of Bolt d'Oro, a filly out of Scenic Road (Quality Road) (Hip 186) and a colt out of Mary Edna (Pioneerof the Nile) (Hip 144).

“We have two Bolts who are good on paper, but physically are just absolute standouts,” Severni said. “They are two different types of horses, but both are beautiful. For a first-crop sire, we think Bolt will do really well up here. The Bolts all look a lot like him. They have long toplines, beautiful shoulders, great hind ends and good walks. They also have great minds and have settled in well up here.”

The other freshman sire represented at the South Point barn is Mendelssohn. A son of the regally bred Coolmore sire out of MSP Ghost Flower (Ghostzapper) is catalogued as Hip 104.

“He is a May foal, but he has really grown into himself and has shown well up here,” Severni said.

Rounding out the consignment are a Gun Runner colt (Hip 24); a daughter of Union Rags (Hip 60); a filly by More Than Ready (Hip 136); and a Munnings filly (Hip 143).

“The outpouring of support we have gotten from the industry has just been absolutely incredible,” Severni said. “People from all over the country have offered their help for this sale and the upcoming sales and it really means a lot to the entire South Point family. We are grateful to the team at Fasig-Tipton, who have done an incredible job helping us along the way and giving us any support we need. I think we are going to be ready for a pretty good sale.”

Recio Fundraiser An Unqualified Success

An event held Sunday, Aug. 1 at McCarthy's Irish Bar in downtown Lexington raised better than $83,000 to benefit the family of Mike Recio, the part-owner of the South Point Sales Consignment, who is battling sepsis in the intensive care unit at Central Baptist Hospital.

Spendthrift Farm's Mark Toothaker, a friend of Recio's who helped organize the event, estimates that better than 200 people attended the event at the popular bar and “you couldn't get another person in there with a shoehorn.”

A vast array of experiences, services, unique items and horse memorabilia were offered during a live auction Sunday evening, donated by Central Kentucky businesses from within the Thoroughbred industry and also from without. Bottles of Pappy Van Winkle 20-year bourbon fetched final bids of $7,500 and $10,000, respectively, while a season to Spendthrift's Jimmy Creed was knocked down for a final bid of $6,000. A halter worn by Stonestreet Stable standout Lady Aurelia realized a final bid of $3,200, a pair of barbecues for 50 donated by Proud Mary BBQ combined to raise $8,200 and two sets of five walking videos provided by ThoroStride sold for a total of $4,750. When all was said and done, $83,850 was raised for the Recios.

A separate online auction concluded Monday afternoon, raising an additional $69,000. A GoFundMe page has also been set up to assist the family.

Fundraiser To Benefit Bloodstock Agent Recio Aug. 1 In Central Kentucky

Kentucky horsemen are rallying around the family of well-known local bloodstock agent Mike Recio, co-founder of South Point Sales and Rockbridge Bloodstock. Recio is currently hospitalized in a Lexington, Ky., intensive care unit and the Thoroughbred community is raising money for Recio's family. In that spirit, a fundraiser has been set up for Aug. 1 at the popular McCarthy's Bar in Lexington, Ky.

Proceeds will go towards expenses for Recio and his family. The silent auction will feature halters from American Pharoah, Authentic, Curlin, Flatter, Justify, Not This Time, and Tapit. A backyard barbeque catered by Proud Mary BBQ, a three-day AirBnB getaway in Midway, and more will be up for grabs. Remote bidding is available for those outside of the Lexington area.

Mike Recio grew up in racing, learning the business from his parents, Bill and Lynn, who own Lynnwood Stable in Ocala, Fla. After graduating from the University of Louisville, Recio went on to work for Taylor Made Sales, Adena Springs, and others before opening South Point Sales with Arika Everatt-Meeuse in 2014.

Stakes Winner Vorticity Retired From Racing; Stud Plans Pending

Matthew Schera's stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed Vorticity has been retired from racing.

Schera purchased the speedy son of Distorted Humor at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training sale for $220,000. Vorticity was a stakes winner by year's end, using a wire-to-wire maiden special score at Aqueduct going seven furlongs as a launching pad to victory in the $100,000 Marylander Stakes at Laurel Park.

Vorticity then embarked on the 2016 Kentucky Derby trail with strong placings in both the Grade 3 Jerome Stakes and G3 Withers Stakes. He earned black type on two more occasions including a sharp third to Catalina Cruiser and Battle of Midway in the G2 Pat O'Brien Stakes at Del Mar. Vorticity retires with $347,040 in the bank.

“I look at a lot of stride data, and Vorticity had a very large stride and he had a very efficient way of going,” said Schera.

Out of the fast multiple graded stakes-winning Flatter mare Tar Heel Mom, Vorticity is bred on the highly successful Distorted Humor/A. P. Indy cross.

A stud deal is pending for Vorticity. He is cataloged as stallion prospect in the upcoming Keeneland November auction with South Point Sales.
