Mating Plans: Bobby Flay

With the 2022 breeding season right around the corner, we will feature a series of breeders' mating plans over the coming weeks. Today we have owner/breeder, chef, and restaurateur Bobby Flay.

SUPER ESPRESSO (m, 15, Medaglia d'Oro–Amizette, by Forty Niner), to be bred to Not This Time

One of the hottest, proven sires of the new generation. Can infuse natural speed into this regally bred family of Courtly Dee.

TIZAHIT (m, 15, Tiznow–Never a No Hitter, by Kris S.), to be bred to Curlin

The mare has already produced a Grade I winner in Come Dancing (Malibu Moon). I'm hoping for another from one of the best sires of the last 30 years.

VERONIQUE (m, 11, Mizzen Mast–Styler, by Holy Bull), to be bred to Munnings

The dam of the track record-breaking speedster Nashville (Speightstown). Munnings has proven to provide powerful speed to his mares' progeny. Plus, it's the same nick as the Nashville mating.

WHITE HOT (IRE) (m, 9, Galileo {Ire}–Gwynn {Ire}, by Darshaan {GB}), to be bred to Into Mischief

The mare produced a Grade I-winning, Breeders' Cup champion in Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). It's easier to have lightning strike twice when you book a date with the current best sire on the continent. White Hot is a stunning mare, the highest-priced yearling filly [1,250,000gns at Tattersalls] in 2014 in the Western Hemisphere. She's by Galileo and is a three-quarter sister to English Derby champion Pour Moi (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).

AMERICAN CAVIAR (m, 3, Curlin–America, by A.P. Indy), to be bred to Street Sense

The full-sister to graded stakes winner First Captain will visit one of the top proven stallions under $100,000.

AMAGANSETT (m, 5, Tapit–Twirl {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), to be bred to Munnings

A Tapit mare from one of the best grass families in Europe. Munnings can provide potent influences on both surfaces.

AMERICA (m, 11, A.P. Indy–Lacadena, by Fasliyev), to be bred to Curlin

This mating created the winner of the GIII Dwyer S., First Captain, as a first foal. I'm looking forward to him adding to his resume as a 4-year-old in 2022. First Captain also topped the sale at Saratoga as a yearling ($1.5 million).

COVER SONG (m, 9, Fastnet Rock {Aus}–Misty For Me {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), to be bred to Into Mischief

The graded stakes winner and half-sister to the likes of U S Navy Flag (War Front) and Roly Poly (War Front) deserves the best mate, so that date has been set.

DAME DOROTHY (m, 11, Bernardini–Vole Vole Monamour, by Woodman), to be bred to Curlin

Repeating the same mating for this Grade I winner as her first foal, GSW Spice Is Nice (Curlin), who also brought over $1 million as a yearling. Dame Dorothy's Uncle Mo yearling colt topped session 1 at Saratoga last summer, bringing $1.6 million from Robert and Lawana Low.

LIFE WELL LIVED (m, 15, Tiznow–Well Dressed, by Notebook), to be bred to Constitution

The dam of Grade I winner American Patriot (War Front) will visit a sire I believe will continue his rise to the top of charts in North America. He can get turf, dirt, long and short. The choice was made to continue the quality progeny this mare produces over and over.

SINGING SWEETLY (IRE) (m, 5, Galileo {Ire}–Sing Softly, by Hennessy), to be bred to Not This Time

A Galileo mare I bought a couple of years ago in France with a big American back family. I'm a big proponent of importing European blood and matching it with some American proven blood. The results? We'll have to wait and see on this one.

STREET STRUT (m, 9, Street Cry {Ire}-Lacadena, by Fasliyev), to be bred to Constitution

The half-sister to my successful broodmare America, who produced First Captain as her first foal, comes from the family of Better Than Honour (Deputy Minister) and Rags to Riches (A.P. Indy). This sire has a chance of filling his sire's footsteps. It's a bet I have a lot of confidence in making.

RUBY LIPS (m, 12, Hard Spun–Its a Ruby, by Rubiano), to be bred to Constitution

The dam of MGSW Lone Rock (Majestic Warrior) and the GI Kentucky Oaks trail filly Gerrymander (Into Mischief) deserves a proven quality sire. Constitution is the answer.

AULD ALLIANCE (Ire) (m, 12, Montjeu {Ire}–Highland Gift {Ire}, by Generous {Ire}), to be bred to Frankel (GB)

A very deep Ballymacoll Stud family with black-type dominating her page. This is my only mare in Europe. When you have the opportunity to flatter a mare with the number one stud in Europe you say, 'yes, please and thank you.' This will be her fourth Frankel foal.

Let us know who you're breeding your mares to in 2022, and why. We will print a selection of your responses in TDN over the coming weeks. Please send details to: garyking@thetdn.com.

Courvoisier Ready for Withers

Courvoisier (Tapit), last-out winner of the Jan. 1 Jerome S., tuned up for Saturday's GIII Withers S. with a five-furlong work in 1:02.41 (2/15) over the Belmont training track Friday.

“He's doing well,” trainer Kelly Breen said. “He breezed Friday by himself. It was a maintenance workout and he's good to go.”

Owned by Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings and James Spry, Courvoisier is a son of 2014 champion 2-year-old filly Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway).

Jerome fourth-place finisher Unbridled Bomber (Upstart) was declared ready for the Withers following a five-furlong breeze in 1:00.60 (1/16) over Belmont's training track Jan. 25.

“We're headed to the Withers next and we're happy with how he's doing. We're happy with how he ran last time and with his last couple races,” said trainer Jim Ryerson. “We'll see if he can stretch out and handle the ground.”

Unbridled Bomber, owned by Ryerson and Edward Potash and Brad Yankanich, broke his maiden going one mile at Belmont Nov. 7. He raced off the pace after breaking a step slowly in the Jerome and rallied three wide into the stretch, but was unable to make up ground.

“As the way the day went, speed was so dominant over that track,” said Ryerson of the Jerome result. “We really couldn't have put him into the pace and so we just had to see how it would go [from off the pace]. I thought he ran very well.”

Trainer Michael Trombetta said the Withers is under consideration for R Larry Johnson's Mr Jefferson (Constitution). The chestnut colt was fourth in last year's GII Remsen S. and sixth in the Jerome.

“More than likely, I'll send Mr Jefferson up. The two turns definitely helps him,” Trombetta said. “The first time I brought him up, I thought he ran well. The last time I don't think he liked the track very much. That might have had something to do with the sub-par performance.”

Mr Jefferson worked four furlongs over the main track at Laurel in :50.80 (4/12) Sunday.

“The track was deep because of the cold weather, but he worked well,” Trombetta said.

The nine-furlong Withers offers 10-4-2-1 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the top-four finishers.

Mating Plans: Sun Valley Farm

With the 2022 breeding season right around the corner, we will feature a series of breeders' mating plans over the coming weeks. Today we have Barry Butzer of Sun Valley Farm.

WILLA (m, 5, Will Take Charge–Miss Kilroy, by A.P. Indy), to be bred to Blame, and her half-sister KITTY (m, 3, Street Boss–Miss Kilroy, by A.P. Indy), to be bred to Union Rags

Very lucky to have my dad at side the day Miss Kilroy strode into the ring at the 2009 January Keeneland Breeding Stock Sale, an 11-year-old A.P. Indy daughter with one winner. While I thought about it, he bought her. In the next 18 months, she produced her first stakes winner, and yet another daughter became stakes placed in a Group 1 in Ireland.

Fast forward 13 years and she turned out to be one of the best impulse buys of all time for us, a page that has expanded to include five individual stakes-producing daughters. While Miss Kilroy (at age 24) is happily enjoying her retirement, these (two of her last three daughters) are just beginning their careers as broodmares:

Willa, a minor winner from three starts, is expecting her first foal by Gun Runner next month, and heads to Blame this season. I can't think of a better stallion to start a young mare. From a personal perspective, we raised a very talented Blame filly, a wire-to-wire winner in an Oaklawn maiden special last month. Produced from an Unbridled's Song mare, the choice was obvious.

Although unraced, Kitty is a solidly built sprinter-type much like her sire, Street Boss. Thought Union Rags was an excellent choice for her. We have had a number of them and he always provides size, scope and athleticism. Think he is in a great spot to use, having experienced big books filled with quality mares of late, while standing at twice the fee.

COURT APPEAL (m, 11, Candy Ride {Arg}–Rehear, by Coronado's Quest), to be bred to Charlatan

Presently in foal to Frosted, Court Appeal is off to a fast start as a producer. Her first foal is the multiple stakes winner Elle Z (City Zip) and her second foal is the talented GI-stakes placed Ginsburned (Noble Mission {GB}). Hard to imagine, other than both being Lane's End Stallions, two stallions with [such] vastly different profiles, so I kind of think she could be the real deal. Her current 3-year-old, Mrs Whistler (Tonalist), owns some fairly impressive works for owner MyRacehorse.

Charlatan has the goods, and is a slam dunk commercially. Competition was keen to get a nice mare in, so we chose Court Appeal. I always like to double up on important females, and this mating finds Silken Doll (second dam of Speightstown) repeated as Court Appeal's third dam.

BETWIXTING (m, 6, Macho Uno–Between the Clouds, by Sky Classic), to be bred to Quality Road

Homebred Betwixting provided us an exciting 2021, reeling off five straight wins, culminating with a win in the listed Satin and Lace S. She hails from a productive Sam-Son Farm family, her dam being a half-sister to a champion grass horse in Canada.

Betwixting turned out to be a real sprint specialist, with a devastating late kick at five and six furlongs. Quality Road has proven to be a consistent source of two-turn, Saturday afternoon graded stakes winners, so I thought it was a great match. As it turns out, Corniche (Quality Road)'s dam is Blushing Groom/Nijinsky, a pedigree with very strong similarities to our Betwixting.

HIGH STYLE (m, 15, Giant's Causeway–Tout Charmant, by Slewvescant), to be bred to Essential Quality, and her daughter MCNALLY (m, 4, Liam's Map), to be bred to Candy Ride {Arg}

High Style is another mare that has produced a couple of graded stakes horses for us, including New and Improved (Cairo Prince), winner of Belmont's GII Sands Point S. New and Improved made news recently–as the second highest-selling mare in foal to Authentic–at the Keeneland November Sale. Versatile producer with winners at the top level on the dirt, grass and synthetic.

Champion and Classic winner Essential Quality will be High Style's most accomplished mate to date. You can't help becoming enamored with his race record and deep family ties. He was all class as he struck a pose in the Godolphin yard the afternoon we paid a visit; when he went for a walk, he sealed the deal.

McNally will start her new career visiting the court of leading sire Candy Ride {Arg}. Arguably the most accomplished of proven sires, and looks to be establishing a sire-of-sires line few in history can match. Again, when it comes to young mares, the proven sire is the best choice.

Candy Ride provides that in spades, and has a real affinity for the Unbridled's Song line.

DIVINE ESCAPADE (m, 13, A.P. Indy–Madcap Escapade, by Hennessy), to be bred to Candy Ride {Arg}

Presently in foal to Curlin, a multiple stakes-producing A.P. Indy mare, whose first dam was not only a sales topper, but known to put on a show in a Grade I. Her first two stakes horses to date (by Speightstown and by Runhappy), have both shown ability; her 3-year-old (Blame) filly is in Japan; and her Gun Runner (2-year-old) and Good Magic (yearling) are both in good hands.

For reasons stated above, Candy Ride made the most sense in this spot as well. This mare is a typical A.P. Indy (except for her chestnut color), big frame and plenty of bone.

On pedigree, physical presence and the success of this cross, Candy Ride made all the sense in the world. Additionally, her Gun Runner 2-year-old looks to be pretty special.

CHAUSIE (m, 14, Bluegrass Cat--Descapate, by Dehere), to be bred to Omaha Beach, and MARRAKESH EXPRESS (m, 8, Union Rags–Layounne, by Mt. Livermore), to be bred to Improbable

Two other mares share a connection in each having a filly sell at Saratoga last year–a Union Rags and a Munnings [respectively]–two fillies we have high hopes for, in their future racing careers.

Chausie, presently in foal to Munnings, is a graded stakes-winning producer and consistently gets a good sales type. She heads to Omaha Beach this season. Her dam, Descapate, won stakes by as many as seven lengths, a family we believe in. Omaha Beach is a can't miss and comes from one of the best families in the stud book. The opportunity of Dehere 4×3 definitely drove this mating.

Marrakesh Express, presently in foal to Global Campaign, is from a prestigious Harbor View Farm family and is booked to Improbable for 2022. He is the one first-year horse I missed out on in 2021. This mare's Munnings filly was in our top five that year; leggy filly and all quality. One look at this horse, and there is no question that these Improbable foals will make everyone's short list at the sales.

Let us know who you're breeding your mares to in 2022, and why. We will print a selection of your responses in TDN over the coming weeks. Please send details to: garyking@thetdn.com.

Insights: Pletcher Sends out Noteworthy Runners on Both Florida Coasts

Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency

3rd-GP, $60K, Msw, 3yo, 1 1/16mT, 12:58 p.m. ET
Todd Pletcher-trained Native Thunder (American Pharoah) is one of a trio of well-bred sophomores who makes their debuts here. Out of 2002 GI Del Mar Debutante S. heroine Miss Houdini (Belong to Me), the $200,000 Keeneland September yearling is half to MGSW millionaire Papa Clem (Smart Strike) and Ce Ce (Elusive Quality), last year's GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint winner and an Eclipse Award finalist. There's some turf in the Lazy F Ranch colorbearer's family as well: another stakes-placed female out of Miss Houdini produced Grade III-winning grasser Hot Springs (Uncle Mo); a full-sister to Ce Ce was stakes-placed on the turf; and MGISW second dam Magical Maiden (Lord Avie) was also the granddam of a Group 2 winner/Group 1-placed runner in Europe.

Chad Brown and Peter Brant sent out Salimah (Ire) (El Kabeir) to become her sire's first U.S. winner and earn 'TDN Rising Star' status last Saturday at Tampa, and will be represented by another of the now Irish-based 2014 GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. winner's progeny in fellow Tattersalls October purchase (125,000gns) Egyptian God (Ire). The grey's dam is a full to precocious Group 2 winner Alhebayeb (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

Stuart Janney III homebred Celestial City (Uncle Mo) is out of a half to Hymn Book (Arch), who won 2012 GI Donn H. here. This is also the family of Grade I-winning turf miler Data Link (War Front). TJCIS PPs

6th-TAM, $34K, Alw/OC, 3yo, 1m70yds, 2:43 p.m. ET
'TDN Rising Star' Emmanuel (More Than Ready), currently in the fifth spot on T.D. Thornton's GI Kentucky Derby Top 12 rankings, will take on a competitive-enough bunch as he looks to build on a 6 3/4-length debut romp going a one-turn mile at Gulfstream Dec. 11. The $350,000 KEESEP yearling from the family of globetrotting MG1SW Hawkbill (Kitten's Joy) and GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity hero Free Drop Billy (Union Rags) was entered in a similar spot here Jan. 7, but was forced to scratch after spiking a temperature.

Pletcher will also be represented by In the Union (Union Rags), an apparent private purchase before he ran by Mathis Stable from Shadwell Farm. The grandson of GI Breeders' Cup F/M Turf heroine Lahudood (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) won first out here Jan. 8.

D J Stable's Glider (Quality Road) enters off a convincing second-out success over the Gulfstream Tapeta Jan. 6 that earned him the same 78 Beyer Speed Figure that Emmanuel did in his maiden breaker. The $200,000 KEESEP acquisition is half to MGSW turf sprinter Fast Boat (City Zip). He'll be representing the same Mark Casse barn whose Golden Glider (Ghostzapper) beat Boitano (Nyquist) and Cloud Play (Into Mischief) in that Jan. 7 race Emmanuel scratched from. TJCIS PPs
