Making Waves: Salimah Sublime At Saratoga

In this series, the TDN takes a look at notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column is highlighted by the victory of the stakes-winning filly Salimah in upstate New York.

 

Stakes Winner Shines At The Spa

The consistent stakes winner Salimah (Ire) (El Kabeir) added a win at Saratoga for Stephanie Seymour Brant and trainer Chad Brown on Thursday (video).

Part of the Yeomanstown Stud breeding programme, the grey was a 180,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 graduate. She has now won four of six starts, with a score in the Winter Memories S. last autumn her best run to date. A half-sister to G2 Mill Reef S. second Fivethousandtoone (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), the 4-year-old's dam, Promised Money (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), won at listed level in Ireland and her latest is a full-brother to that gelding. G1 Irish 2000 Guineas runner-up Fa-eq (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) is under the third dam.

Now standing at Allevamenti della Berardenga in Italy after a stint at Yeomanstown, El Kabeir has had two runners in the U.S. counting Salimah. His six stakes winners worldwide include the Group 2-winning pair of Azure Blue (Ire) and Don Chicco (GB).

 

 

 

Kodiac Colt Takes 3-Year-Old Bow In New York

Klaravich Stables' Appraise (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) made a winning 3-year-old bow in a Belmont affair on Saturday (video).

Bred by Mr. J and Mrs. L Scott, the Chad Brown trainee sold for 85,000gns as a Tattersalls December foal, and, returned to that ring as a Book 1 yearling, brought 180,000gns. Out of Irish listed winner Champagne Or Water (Ire) (Captain Rio {GB}), the GI Summer S. second has a juvenile half-sister named Lucky Silks (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}). The listed-winning third dam, Desert Drama (Ire) (Green Desert), was third in the G2 Criterium des Maisons-Laffitte, before foaling multiple Group 2 winner Endless Drama (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), who was Classic-placed in Ireland and Group 1-placed in Australia.

Tally-Ho Stud's Kodiac has sired 36 winners from 72 runners (50%) in the U.S. and Canada. His seven stakes winners there (9.7%) are led by True Valour (Ire), the winner of the GII City of Hope Mile S., and Grade III winners Campanelle (Ire), Island Of Love (Ire) and Spirit Of Xian (Ire).

 

Cityscape Filly Trounces Foes At Belmont

Madaket Stables, LLC, Michael Dubb, and Michael Kisber's Chili Flag (Fr) (Cityscape {GB}) added a win in a Belmont contest to her resume (video) in her third U.S. start.

Bred by Finanza Locale Consulting SRL in France, the Listed Prix Saraca second was a €5,000 buy-back at the Arqana December Sale in 2019, and raced for Alain Jathiere and Gerard Augustin-Normand and trainer Maurizio Guarnieri. She made €140,000 at Arqana's 2022 Arc Sale and was transferred Stateside.

A half-sister to the stakes-placed Flers (Fr) (Dream Ahead), Chili Flag is out of Flag Day (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), whose latest foal is a yearling filly by Olympic Glory (Ire). Her second dam, G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Blue Duster (Danzig) is a full-sister to fellow top-level winner Zieten.

Besides GII John C. Mabee S. heroine Avenue De France (Fr), Chili Flag is the second winner and third runner for Cityscape in America.

 

 

Honourable Mention:

AMO Racing USA's Kingmax (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) improved his record with a win at Monmouth Park on Friday (video). The 4-year-old featured in this June 15 column, and is trained by Jorge Delgado. The son of G2 Prix de Pomone heroine Baino Hope (Fr) (Jeremy) was third in the G3 Hampton Court S. earlier in his career.

Danzing Candy’s Yo Yo Candy Upsets Sanford At 46-1

Yo Yo Candy (Danzing Candy), a distant third behind Gold Sweep (Speightstown) in the Tremont S. downstate June 11, pulled off a 46-1 shocker with blinkers added in Saturday's GIII Sanford S. at the 'Graveyard of Favorites.'

With the complexion of the race completely upside down after the aforementioned 1-5 favorite stumbled badly at the start, Yo Yo Candy found a good spot in a stalking third through fractions of :22.15 and :45.83. He was tipped out at the top of the stretch by Angel Castillo and kicked home nicely to score by 2 1/4 lengths. Gold Sweep, the recipient of a gaudy 91 Beyer for his nine-length Tremont romp, ran a remarkable race to close from second-to-last to complete the exacta.

Yo Yo Candy debuted with a three-length victory going 4 1/2 furlongs at Parx May 23 prior to his effort at 26-1 in the Tremont.

“I jumped from the balcony over here,” winning trainer Danny Velazquez said after winning his second career graded stakes race. “I don't even know how I got here. This is a dream come true. As a kid you dream of winning races here and here I am.”

He continued, “The blinkers adjustment was huge. In his last race, we didn't have the blinkers because he won first time out and we were happy with that. I watched him break last time and he broke a little sluggish. He has more speed than that tactically. I added the blinkers and took him back to the gate a couple of times after the race. I told Angel [Castillo], 'If he's as good as we think he is, we're going to be competitive.' No respect on the board, but we knew coming in that we did everything right coming into this race. I was very, very satisfied watching him out there warm up.”

Velazquez added that the GI Hopeful S. Sept. 4 at Saratoga could be next.

The California-bred Yo Yo Candy, a $35,000 OBS March breezer (:10 1/5), becomes the first graded and second stakes winner for young sire Danzing Candy. His SW & GISP dam Yolanda B. Too (Two Punch), just a $14,000 purchase by breeder Checkmate Thoroughbreds at the 2015 KEENOV sale, is also responsible for a Danzing Candy colt of 2022 and a Sir Prancealot (Ire) colt of this year. She was bred to Eight Rings for 2024.

Ahoy Matey! Pirate Romps In Debut at Saratoga

On paper, it looked like Pirate (Omaha Beach) had a lot going for him in Saturday's first race at Saratoga, a $105,000 maiden special weight run at 5 1/2 furlongs. A half-brother to GI Preakness S. winner National Treasure (Quality Road), he sold for $350,000 at Keeneland September, had a bullet four-furlong work leading up to the race and hailed from the mighty Todd Pletcher barn. So it was hardly a surprise when he cruised to a three-length win, covering the distance in 1:04.89 for the partnership of Harrell Ventures, LLC and Starlight Racing en route to being named a 'TDN Rising Star'. Bet off the board, he paid $2.70.

“I thought Pirate ran fantastic,” said Jack Wolf, the managing partner and founder of Starlight.  “You never know, but I think Todd expected him to run well. I don't know what the figure will be, but I know Todd thought going into the race that he was a good horse. And now he's the winner of a maiden special weight race at Saratoga.”

Breaking from post one under Irad Ortiz Jr., Pirate was quick out of the gate and quickly took control of the race. He was pressed early by Arteta (Take Charge Indy), shook that one off entering the top of the stretch and then had plenty left when eventual runner-up Just Steel (Justify) made his run.

“We thought he would win,” Wolf said. “He ran to the way he trained. Irad has been on him in the mornings. I probably won't commit suicide over the next two or three weeks.”

The GI Hopeful S. looks like a logical spot for Pirate to make his next start.

“Todd makes all those decisions, but wouldn't you think the Hopeful would be next, especially with the way he won?” Wolf said. “It certainly looks like a possibility.”

Starlight is among a large ownership group that owns National Treasure.

Cody’s Wish Breezes for Whitney

Cody's Wish (Curlin) worked five furlongs in 1:00 (1/15) Saturday over the Oklahoma training track in preparation for the $1-million GI Whitney Aug. 5.

The Godolphin homebred is currently on a six-race winning streak topped by a powerful 3 1/4-length score last out in the GI Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan H. June 10 at Belmont Park.

“He was very good. He went five eighths and went well and appeared to be well within himself,” Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott said. “We're uncertain about the nine furlongs (in the Whitney), but we're going to remain optimistic. Until they do it, you never know. Maybe now that he's more mature than he was early on, maybe he'll do it. He's more seasoned.”

His stablemate and last year's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Elite Power (Curlin) worked a bullet five eighths in :59.60 (1/13) Friday over the Oklahoma training track and could make two starts at the Spa for Mott this summer in the GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. July 29 and the GI Forego S. Aug. 26.

“His work was very good,” Mott said. “He'll go to the Vanderbilt and then possibly the Forego.”

Cox Barn Loaded for the Spa…

Last year's GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner Caravel (Mizzen Mast) worked a half-mile in :48.88 (6/20) Saturday over the Oklahoma training turf as she prepares to take on the boys in the GIII Troy S., a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint for older horses Aug. 5.

“Really good. She's an outstanding workhorse,” trainer Brad Cox said of the last out GI Jaipur S. winner. “It's her first move up here on the turf. She breezed last weekend at Churchill. It's just a maintenance move and she's doing great. She's pointing to the Troy right now.”

He continued, “Physically, she looks amazing. She's happy. I don't know if we need her to get any better, she just has to continue to be as good as she's been the first half of the year. If we can duplicate that in the second half, we'll be in great shape.”

The stretch-running Wet Paint (Blame), fourth as the favorite in the GI Kentucky Oaks and second in the Monomoy Girl S. June 17, worked five furlongs in 1:00.60 (6/15) Saturday over the Oklahoma training track in preparation for next Saturday's GI Coaching Club American Oaks.

“Really good move this morning. She went five-eighths from the half in 1:00.60 and out in 1:13.60,” Cox said. “She's not the flashiest workhorse, but this morning she was on it and she was wanting to do it. I loved what I saw from her. She's set up for a big run next week.”

West Will Power (Bernardini), winner of the GI Stephen Foster S. July 1, worked a half mile in :51.40 (88/95) at Churchill Downs Saturday in preparation for a possible start in the GI Whitney Aug. 5.

“It was just a really easy half mile and if all is well he make the trip up this week,” Cox said.

Angel of Empire (Classic Empire) and Hit Show (Candy Ride {Arg), who dead-heated for fourth last out in the GI Belmont S., worked five eighths in company in 1:00.90 (5/13) Friday over the Oklahoma training track.

“Very good move. I'm very happy with them,” Cox said.

Both horses will point to the nine-furlong GII Jim Dandy S. July 29 with an eye towards the 10-furlong GI Travers S. Aug. 26.

“I don't know if any of these horses want to run a mile and a half, but they ran big races in the Belmont and got really good figures,” Cox said. “They've had time to recover and had some really good moves down at Churchill.”

Tapit Trice Haskell Bound… 

'TDN Rising Star' Tapit Trice (Tapit), a close third in the GI Belmont S., breezed a half mile in :49.15 (27/84) over the Belmont Park main track on Saturday in preparation for the GI Haskell Invitational on July 22 at Monmouth Park.

“He just did what he normally does which is work well and gallop out strongly,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “He was moving great. It was everything we wanted to see.”

Luis Saez will ride Tapit Trice in the Haskell.
