NYRA Invites Fans to Enjoy Saratoga Virtually With ‘Your Summer Place’

The New York Racing Association is inviting fans to celebrate the 2020 summer meet at historic Saratoga Race Course remotely with an assortment of virtual events and downloadable content.

For the 40-day meet that runs from July 16 through Sept. 7, fans can access the “Your Summer Place” experience via the NYRA Events page. Posters, tip sheets, recipes and more will be added throughout the meet to help fans stay close to the racing action from the comfort of their own homes.

“Your Summer Place” will provide an immersive, at-home initiative designed to maximize the ways fans can experience the action at the Spa while still adhering to New York state guidelines regarding live racing without spectators in attendance.

Downloadable items also include a featured restaurant of the week, which will highlight a different Saratoga Springs-based establishment that encompasses both a restaurant bio and links to recipes crafted specially by the restaurant. Keeping with the food theme, Levy, Saratoga’s food-and-beverage provider, will also create special recipes throughout the summer to bolster the dining choices of any horseplayer.

“Your Summer Place” will also offer downloadable posters–and special trading cards–of each GI Whitney S. contender and provide full profile information for every contender in the GI Runhappy Travers S.

Saratoga Meet Kicks off with Shifted Peter Pan

A field of nine sophomores, including the field’s lone graded winner Modernist (Uncle Mo), will line up for Thursday’s GIII Peter Pan S. on Saratoga’s opening day program.

Traditionally run as a prep downstate for the GI Belmont S., the Peter Pan was moved to Saratoga as a potential prep for this summer’s GI Runhappy Travers S. The Peter Pan carries 85 qualifying points (50-20-10-5) toward the GI Kentucky Derby.

Modernist, a 12-1 upset winner of the split-division GII Risen Star S. Feb. 15, followed a third-place finish in the GII TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby Mar. 21 with a seventh-place finish in the GI Belmont S. June 20.

Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper) earned ‘TDN Rising Star’ honors in an impressive maiden breaker going two turns at second asking at Fair Grounds Mar. 21, then was second behind Tap It to Win (Tapit) in a quickly run optional claimer going a one-turn 1 1/16 miles at Belmont Park last time June 4.

Fellow ‘Rising Star’ Caracaro (Uncle Mo) returns in this ambitious spot while making his first start since a six-length graduation going a one-turn mile at Gulfstream Jan. 11.

Candy Tycoon (Twirling Candy), a well-beaten second in the GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. Feb. 29, was a late-running second behind subsequent GII Toyota Blue Grass S. third Rushie (Liam’s Map) in an optional claimer last time at Oaklawn May 2.

Tiz the Law Breezes Towards, Max Player Aiming For Runhappy Travers

Tiz the Law (Constitution) continued his preparations for the $1-million GI Runhappy Travers S. Wednesday morning, working five furlongs in a solid 1:01.10 over a Belmont main track labeled as fast. It was the New York-bred’s second breeze since winning the GI Belmont S. June 20. He went a maintenance half-mile in :50.06 July 1.

“He looked perfect,” trainer Barclay Tagg said. “He’s got a lot of energy. He wouldn’t blow out a candle.”

Tiz the Law is perfect in three starts this season, having won the GIII Holy Bull S. Feb. 1 ahead of a smooth success in the GI Curlin Florida Derby Mar. 28. He defeated Dr Post (Quality Road) by 3 3/4 lengths in the first leg of this year’s reconstituted Triple Crown last month.

“It’s just a matter of keeping him happy and healthy for seven weeks between now and the Travers,” said Jack Knowlton, operations manager for owner Sackatoga Stable. “[Assistant trainer] Robin [Smullen] says nothing phases him. If you watch him around the stable, on the track, and during his races it all seems to be true. Fortunately, [jockey] Manny [Franco] has gotten to know what he has under him and has done a great job. Hopefully we can continue the roll that we’re on.”

Trainer Linda Rice confirmed that GIII Withers S. hero and Belmont third placegetter Max Player (Honor Code) is also being prepared for the 10-furlong ‘Midsummer Derby’ at Saratoga, having also considered other options over the coming weeks.

“We’re leaning towards running in the Travers,” Rice said. “We looked at some other options with the [Grade I] Haskell [at Monmouth] or the [Grade III] Peter Pan [July 16 at Saratoga], but we are going to point right to the Travers.”
