Gun Runner’s Chatalas Breeders’ Cup-Bound after Chandelier

Rancho Temescal Thoroughbreds and Dan Agnew's Chatalas (f, 2, Gun Runner–Indian Safari, by Indian Charlie), fourth last month behind ultra-impressive 'TDN Rising Star' Tamara (Bolt d'Oro) in the GI Del Mar Debutante, looks like she'll get another shot at that rival after winning the GII Chandelier S. at Santa Anita Saturday and earning a 'Win and You're In' berth to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Co-owner Agnew also bred the filly.

“Cloud nine, now that would describe it,” said Agnew. “Especially with a homebred like this, it is a great thrill and Mark [Glatt]'s done a great job with the filly. The man that was on the farm said, 'This is one I think you ought to keep and I think he was right.' I think the way Gun Runner has proven a great sire to both fillies and colts was a big reason I decided to keep her and race her. On to the Breeders' Cup. We hope that she comes out well and we are looking forward to it.”

Chatalas broke from the inside in the Chandelier with running on her mind. She immediately secured the front and was quickly joined by Bob Baffert's GIII Sorrento S. third-place finisher Dua (Arrogate), but Antonio Fresu up on the winner was relaxed and riding high in the saddle. The pair moved comfortably through early fractions of :23.69 and :47.97, continuing to hold Dua at bay by a half-length. Fresu threw a few crosses coming off the turn, encouraged Chatalas a few times with the stick, and the race was quickly put to bed. The bay left Dua behind as she strode powerfully to the wire. Meanwhile, Todd Pletcher maiden shipper Scalable (Speightstown) commenced a rally and caught Dua but there was no catching Chatalas, who had plenty left to hold off the late challenge.

“We've always thought the further she went the better she would be,” said Glatt. “A little disappointed with the Debutante performance, but I look back on it and she was fairly close to :44 fractions and that's just not her. We knew she would have pretty good speed going two turns and she did kind of everything her own way. She broke sharp and had a relatively comfortable lead. Fresu rode her great.”

Chatalas debuted July 30 with a victory at Del Mar sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs. Her 74 Beyer Speed Figure that day was second-best in this field behind Laurent (Practical Joke)'s 78 when second in the same Debutante Chatalas in which finished fourth. Laurent was the favorite Saturday in the Chandelier, but chased wide and finished ninth.

Pedigree Notes:

Not bad for an afternoon's work. Three Chimneys super sire Gun Runner had four graded stakes entries Friday. Two won and all four hit the board. About 45 minutes before Chatalas won the Chandelier, his Wicked Halo was a nose second in the GII Thoroughbred Club of America S. at Keeneland. Earlier in the afternoon, his Life Talk had been third in the GI Frizette S. at Belmont at Aqueduct, and moments after the Chandelier, his 'TDN Rising Star' Locked won the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland. Such is a Saturday afternoon in the rarefied air of Gun Runner's world. Interestingly, Locked, Life Talk, and Wicked Halo all hail from A.P. Indy broodmare sire lines, but Chatalas is out of an Indian Charlie mare. Chatalas is the 101st stakes winner out of a daughter of Indian Charlie and is one of 23 black-type winners by Gun Runner. A member of his third crop, Chatalas is one of 17 graded winners for Gun Runner.

Indian Safari, the dam of Chatalas, has a yearling filly by Bernardini who was a $225,000 purchase by Repole Stable out of the recent Keeneland September yearling sale. Her 2023 Liam's Map filly was foaled Apr. 12 and she was bred back to that sire for next term. Fleetwood Bloodstock purchased Indian Safari on behalf of Agnew for $130,000 while carrying her first foal, a Union Rags filly, at the 2015 Keeneland November sale.

Rancho Temescal Welcomes Non-Profit Fresh Start Sport Horses Retraining Program

Rancho Temescal, a leading Thoroughbred farm in Southern California, has opened the gates of its 6,000-acre property to house incoming tenant Fresh Start Sport Horses, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that retrains racehorses for alternative careers under the direction of founder and head trainer Cassandra Andersson. The move to relocate all Fresh Start horses and equipment from the group's former, five-acre leased facility in Agua Dulce is expected to be completed by Sept. 1, 2023.

“We are honored to welcome Fresh Start Sport Horses to our farm,” said Rancho Temescal President Tim Cohen. “My family has long operated under the philosophy of always care–not just after care–for our athletes. This exciting addition of Fresh Start and its wonderful retraining program will allow us to continue that commitment on a much more fundamental and meaningful level.”

Over the past seven years, approximately 50 horses campaigned by Red Baron's or owned by Rancho Temescal clients have been rehomed through the Fresh Start program.

These graduates range in status from $1,384,604-earner Itsinthepost (Fr) and $397,140-earner Si Sage (Fr), each of whom carried Red Baron's silks to multiple graded stakes victories, to the non-winners Fi Fi's Wild Heart and Endearing Suances, whose combined career earnings on the racetrack were just over $1,000.

“It is so rewarding to see our former racehorses thrive in their new careers, no matter how much talent they displayed on the track,” Cohen said. “So, when we learned recently that Fresh Start was considering closing their facilities due to a lack of resources, Red Baron's Barn jumped at the opportunity to provide significant funding and housing so Cassandra and her crew can continue their important work here at Rancho Temescal.”

Rancho Tesmescal’s Cohen Hosts Book Event in Del Mar

S.H.E. (Share Heal Empower, Volume Two), the latest book by author Shannon Hogan Cohen, will be the focus of an evening June 4 from 2 – 5 p.m. at the Ramsey Art Gallery in the Del Mar Plaza in Del Mar, California. The book presents 22 stories of women from diverse cultures and ages who share their journeys of discovery, resilience, and perseverance. Cohen and her husband Tim own the California Thoroughbred operation Rancho Temescal.

Hogan Cohen's book celebrates the power of storytelling as a tool for healing and inspiration for women of all ages and circumstances. The stories in S.H.E. are accompanied by artwork specifically created for each chapter, providing an added dimension to the powerful narratives. Cohen said, “I am thrilled to bring this new volume to readers and to continue my mission of honoring the stories of women from all walks of life. Through their words, we can all find connection and empowerment and make a difference in the world together. All stories matter.”

Alix Choppin, the former Head of Marketing and Development of Arqana, is one of the women whose story is featured in the book.

“I met Shannon through racing but our conversation quickly expanded beyond horses and when she mentioned the S.H.E. project, I thought it was a fantastic initiative,” said Choppin of her involvement. “As a peer support worker in mental healthcare, I am a great believer in the healing power of sharing. So many women who go through difficult times isolate themselves by fear of judgement or stigmatization. On the contrary, talking to and hearing from people who have endured similar hardship can be extremely beneficial as it brings support, inspiration and helps you consider your issues with a fresh outlook. This book is a tribute to resilience and sisterhood, which I think will resonate in many women in racing and beyond.”

Cohen will be on hand at the Ramsey Art Gallery along with several of the featured subjects for readings from the book, and a book signing.

Hernandez, D’Amato Top Santa Anita Standings

Juan Hernandez was the leading rider and Phil D'Amato topped the trainer's list at Santa Anita's 43-day Classic Meet, which concluded Sunday. Tim and Mark Cohen's Rancho Temescal and Red Baron's Barn were the meet's leading owners.

Hernandez, a 31-year-old native of Veracruz, Mexico won four races on opening day and never slowed down, adding two races on closing day Sunday to give him 63 victories for the meet, more than double that of runner-up Flavien Prat's 31.

In the all-important stakes-won category, it was Hernandez leading Prat 13 to 11, helping him to top all riders by purse money-won with $4,672,374.

D'Amato won 32 races, five better than Bob Baffert and D'Amato finished with 11 stakes wins, second to Baffert's 12.

A 57-year-old native of San Pedro, CA, D'Amato earned his third consecutive Classic Meet (formerly Winter/Spring) title and his fourth overall at Santa Anita.

The Cohen family's Rancho Temescal and Red Baron's Barn won 13 races, five of them stakes.

Santa Anita's first-ever Hollywood Meet will open Apr. 21 and run through June 18.
