Grade 1 Winners Vequist, Search Results Out For Remainder Of 2021

Two Grade 1-winning sophomore fillies have been sidelined for the remainder of 2021, reports the Daily Racing Form.

Vequist, last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies champion, had been preparing to return off a seven-month layoff this week, but an issue was discovered after her latest workout.

“She had a minor setback coming out of her last work and will be off for rest of the year,” trainer Butch Reid told DRF.

The 3-year-old daughter of Nyquist has only started once in 2021, running ninth in the G2 Davona Dale on Feb. 27 at Gulfstream Park. She completed five workouts at Saratoga this summer, and Reid had planned to enter her in an allowance race on Thursday.

Search Results, winner of the G1 Acorn and a valiant second to Malathaat in the Kentucky Oaks, has also been taken out of training. Trainer Chad Brown said the filly, most recently third in the G1 Test Stakes, does not have any series issues. She just needs a break from the races.

“I'm really looking forward to running her in mile-and-an-eighth races next year,” Brown told DRF. “That was a really good race in the Oaks. If she can just get a couple of lengths faster as a 4-year-old, she's a real player in these mile-and-an-eighth races all over the place next year.”

White Filly Sodashi Back To The Winner’s Circle In Japan

The all-white Sodashi defeated elders for the first time in her career on Sunday, capturing Japan's Grade 2 Sapporo Kinen by three-quarters of a length over the favorite, Arc hopeful Loves Only You, reports racingpost.com.

The 3-year-old daughter Kurofune made headlines as the first white Thoroughbred to succeed at racing's top level when she won the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies in December, but disappointed with her first loss earlier this year when eighth in the Japanese Oaks in May. Sunday's Sapporo Kinen was her first start since, and the Naosuke Sugai-trained filly responded well off the three-month layoff.

It was the 100th graded stakes win for owner Makoto Kaneko, also the owner of the late legendary sire Deep Impact.

Winning jockey Hayato Yoshida told racingpost.com: “I am relieved. She had the outside stall so I thought the start was important. She maintained her rhythm in the race and her response was very fine, it was like she was saying, 'I can move any time on your command.'

“The ground was right for her, and I had confidence we could quicken and get the front-runners from the home turn.”

Nick Alexander's homebred Lieutenant Dan was just too fast for seven rivals in Sunday's $101,500 Green Flash Handicap at Del Mar, running five furlongs on turf in :55.98.

The 5-year-old gelding by Alexander's prime stallion, Grazen, shook off pressure early, then cleared late to finish 2 1/4 lengths best in the dash for 3-year-olds and up. He picked up a check for $60,000 for the win and pushed his bankroll to $543,740.

Geovanni Franco rode the winner for trainer Steve Miyadi.

Finishing second was Hogan or Hogan's Give Me the Lute, a neck in front of Slam Dunk Racing, Old Bones Racing Stable and Nentwig's Gregorian Chant.

Lieutenant Dan paid $6.00, $3.40 and $2.60. Give Me the Lure returned $7.40 and $4.80 and Gregorian Chant paid $3.60 to show.
