Iowa Commission Approves 84 Live Race Dates For Prairie Meadows In 2021

Live horse racing returns to Prairie Meadows Casino, Racetrack, & Hotel on Friday, April 30 when the Altoona, Ia. facility opens its 32nd season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse action.

On Thursday, Jan. 21, the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC) approved an 84-day 2021 race meet for Prairie Meadows.

The season begins with 26 days of Thoroughbred-only racing from April 30 – June 14 and continues with a mixed Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse schedule for the remaining 58 race days through Sept. 25.

Live racing will be offered on a Friday – Monday schedule, with post times set for 6 PM CDT on Fridays and Saturdays, and 4 PM CDT on Sundays and Mondays, with exceptions for special race days, events, and holidays.

Horsemen should note that Condition Book 1 and stall application for the 2021 season will be posted online in the Horseman's Information area of Prairie Meadows' website at www.prairiemeadows.com/racing/horsemens-info and is also available in hardcopy form via mail or at Prairie Meadows Racing Office.

Condition Book 1 will include the first 18 days of the 2021 season (Thoroughbred-only racing). Stall Applications will be due in the Racing Office on Wednesday, March 24.

The barn area is scheduled to open for horses on Friday, April 2 and training is set to begin on Sunday, April 4, weather permitting.

Prairie Meadows will offer 32 Thoroughbred stakes races in 2021 (including overnight stakes) worth an estimated $2.92 million. The highlights of the Thoroughbred stakes calendar are the Iowa Festival of Racing on Friday, July 2 and Saturday, July 3 and the traditional Iowa Classic stakes races on Saturday, Sept. 25.

In addition, the track will offer 23 Quarter Horse stakes races in 2021 worth an estimated $1.6 million, highlighted by the Bank of America/Prairie Meadows Regional Challenge Finals on Saturday, Aug. 14 and Sunday, Aug. 15, Prairie Meadows Quarter Horse Championships on Friday, Sept. 24, and Iowa Classic stakes races for the Quarter Horses on Saturday, Sept. 25.

Quarter Horse connections are reminded that Futurity and Derby nomination forms are available online, by mail, or by request through the Prairie Meadows Racing Office.

Payment schedules begin March 1 for the Prairie Meadows Gold Futurity and Derby, Hawkeye Futurity, Cyclone Derby, and Iowa Quarter Horse Stallion Futurity and Derby.

Payment schedules begin April 1 for the Valley Junction Futurity, Altoona Derby, Jim Bader Futurity, and Polk County Derby.

New York Racing Association Plans 202 Live Race Dates In 2021

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) has announced the 2021 NYRA racing calendar, which calls for 202 live race days at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course.

Live racing is currently being conducted at Aqueduct, where the 2021 winter meet continues through Sunday, March 28. Following the conclusion of the 2021 winter meet, the 11-day spring meet will open on Thursday, April 1 and conclude on Sunday, April 18.

Stakes schedules for upcoming meets will be announced at the appropriate time.

Following the conclusion of the 2021 Aqueduct spring meet, live racing will shift to beautiful Belmont Park for a 48-day spring/summer meet, which is highlighted by the 153rd running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 5. The 2021 spring/summer meet will run from Thursday April 22 through Sunday, July 11. Live racing will generally be conducted 4 days per week throughout the spring/summer meet, Thursday-Sunday.

The 40-day summer meet at historic Saratoga Race Course will open on Thursday, July 15 and continue through Labor Day, Sept. 6. Following opening weekend, racing will be conducted 5 days a week with the exception of the 6-day closing week. The summer meet is anchored by the 94th running of the Whitney on Aug. 7 and the 152nd running of the Travers on Aug. 28.

Following the conclusion of the 2021 summer meet, live racing will return to Belmont for a 28-day fall meet, which will open on Thursday, Sept. 16 and continue through Sunday, Oct. 31. Live racing will generally be conducted 4 days per week throughout the fall meet, Thursday-Sunday.

Racing returns to the Big A on Friday, Nov. 5 for an 18-day fall meet that will run through Sunday, Dec. 5. The Aqueduct winter meet will then begin on Thursday, Dec. 9 with the 2021 schedule to conclude on Dec. 31.

To mitigate risk and reduce the spread of COVID-19, New York state currently requires all racetracks to operate without spectators in attendance and with a series of health and safety guidelines in place. A limited number of owners licensed by the state are currently permitted to attend live racing on the day their horse is entered.

Delaware Park Approved For 77-Day Race Meet In 2021

Delaware Park is planning a 77-day meet for the upcoming 84th season of live racing after receiving approval from the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission on Tuesday.

The live racing season will open on Wednesday, May 26, and conclude on Saturday, Oct. 16.

Live racing days during the week will be announced at a later date.
