Prominent Owner, Breeder Frank Generazio Jr. Dies At 91

Frank Generazio Jr., an owner and breeder responsible for some of the most memorable turf runners of the past couple decades, died Saturday at the age of 91.

A resident of Jupiter, Fla., Generazio was a participant in the Thoroughbred business for five decades with his wife Patricia, under whose name their horses usually ran. Their racing operation began in the Northeast at tracks like Suffolk Downs and Rockingham Park, and the stable can primarily be seen today in New York and Florida under trainer Christophe Clement.

Generazio entered Thoroughbred ownership after a conversation at his father's birthday party led to a group of friends agreeing to put in money to claim a handful of racehorses at Suffolk Downs. After a few years, he was the only member of the group still in the game.

The Generazios became fully entrenched in the business after the $27,000 yearling purchase of Concorde Bound, a colt who went on to become a Grade 3 winner in the mid-1980s. He then retired to stud, and though he died of colic after a couple seasons at stud, the handful of foals he produced set the roots for his owner's homebred program through their success on the racetrack and in the breeding shed.

In recent years, the pink and green Generazio colors were best known for flying over a pair of homebred high-level gray turf sprinters in Disco Partner and Pure Sensation. Disco Partner set a world record for six furlongs over the turf at Belmont Park when he won the 2017 Grade 3 Jaipur Invitational Stakes in 1:05.67. Pure Sensation, who is still racing in 2020, is an eight-time graded stakes winner, and he won the Jaipur himself in 2016.

The Generazio homebred program has also included Discreet Marq, who won the G1 Del Mar Oaks for her breeders, then sold for $2.4 million at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November sale. They also bred and raced Discreet Marq's dam and granddam.

In addition to owning and breeding, Generazio spent time as a trainer in the Mid-Atlantic, racking up 370 wins from 1991 to 2006. His most notable runners in that span included Grade 2 winner Concorde's Gold and Grade 3 winners Unreal Turn and Play It Again Stan. He also trained the multiple stakes winner Concorde's Tune, who became a successful sire.

Generazio was a long-serving president of the New England HBPA, a member of the New Jersey HBPA, and he was a high-ranking member of the National HBPA.

The Generazios have based their breeding operation at Pleasant Acres Stallions in Morriston, Fla., since the 1990s, and they currently board about 35 horses at Joe and Helen Barbazon's farm, between broodmares and young horses.

Though the Generazios were clients well before the transaction, their relationship with the Barbazons was solidified with the private purchase of Presious Passion, a colt bred by the Barbazons.

Presious Passion went on to to earn $2,694,599 over the course of eight seasons, including two victories in the Grade 1 United Nations Stakes, a win in the G1 Clement L. Hirsch Memorial Championship Stakes, and a runner-up effort in the 2009 Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita Park. The gelding returned to Pleasant Acres at the end of his racing career.

Memorial details for Generazio are still to be announced.

A ‘Remarkable Horse,’ 9-Year-Old Gelding Pure Sensation Retired

Patricia Generazio's homebred Pure Sensation, a 9-year-old Zensational gelding, was retired following a seventh-place finish in Saturday's Grade 3 Troy at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Out of the Disco Rico mare Pure Disco, the popular grey retires with a record of 38-14-5-7 and purse earnings of $2,004,050.

“He's been amazingly consistent over the years. He was a very fast horse from the beginning and he will be a tough guy to replace,” said trainer Christophe Clement. “He was a very straightforward horse and very kind. He traveled all over the country. He ran last year in the Breeders' Cup and was the favorite in the race. It's extraordinary how long he lasted at the top level. It's a credit to Mr. and Mrs. Generazio and their breeding program.”

A multiple graded-stakes winner, Pure Sensation enjoyed tremendous success at Parx where he captured the Grade 3 Parx Dash three times [2016-17, 2019] and the Grade 3 Turf Monster on four occasions [2015, 2017-19].

Pure Sensation graduated at third asking in October 2013 at Belmont Park and was stakes placed twice in a productive juvenile campaign. He notched his first stakes win in the 2014 Quick Call at Saratoga and made the grade in September 2015 when taking his first Turf Monster.

In June 2016, Pure Sensation bested his fellow Generazio homebred and eventual stablemate Disco Partner by a neck in the Grade 3 Jaipur at Belmont. A year later, Disco Partner, this time under the care of Clement, turned the tables on Pure Sensation with a neck win in the 2017 Jaipur.

“What's special about the two of them is that they helped each other,” said Clement's son and assistant, Miguel. “One would be on the lead, and the other would be closing.”

Pure Sensation and Disco Partner would square off on seven occasions, with the latter earning a 3-2 edge on wins. Disco Partner was retired to stand at Rockridge Stud in Hudson, New York at the end of last season.

Clement noted the two long-standing gray turf sprinters will be missed on the track, but he said Pure Sensation may get to enjoy a new career at the racetrack.

“I'm not sure what Mr. Generazio would like to do yet, whether he wants him retired to the farm or if we can use him as a pony at the track because he would be a very popular pony if I can take him with us to Payson Park,” said Clement. “He's a remarkable horse. He was a stakes horse as a 2-year-old and he competed for seven years. This year I couldn't get him back to form but he is healthy and sound and he looks well.”

Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables and Bethlehem Stables' Shekky Shebaz was elevated to second after being interfered with in the stretch run of the Troy by Imprimis, who was disqualified from the top slot and placed third.

Shekky Shebaz finished third in the Wolf Hill at Monmouth Park in his first start since being transferred to Clement's care and the veteran conditioner, currently tied for most wins [15] with Todd Pletcher at the Spa summer meet, said he was pleased with the 5-year-old Cape Blanco gelding's effort.

“He ran well. It was a better race than his first time with us Monmouth,” said Clement. “He finished very well. He got in trouble but still he was game and he tried. As long as he keeps going up, the Lucky Coin at the end of the meet would be a logical spot for him.”

The $85,000 Lucky Coin, a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint for 4-year-olds and upward is slated for September 6.

Multimillionaire Turf Sprinter Pure Sensation Retired

Patricia Generazio’s homebred 9-year-old gelding Pure Sensation (Zensational–Purse Disco, by Disco Rico) was retired following a seventh-place finish in Saturday’s GIII Troy S. at Saratoga. Out of the Disco Rico mare Pure Disco, the popular grey retires with a record of 38-14-5-7 and purse earnings of $2,004,050.

“He’s been amazingly consistent over the years. He was a very fast horse from the beginning and he will be a tough guy to replace,” said trainer Christophe Clement. “He was a very straightforward horse and very kind. He traveled all over the country. He ran last year in the Breeders’ Cup and was the favorite in the race. It’s extraordinary how long he lasted at the top level. It’s a credit to Mr. and Mrs. Generazio and their breeding program.”

A multiple graded stakes winner, Pure Sensation picked up stakes wins in six consecutive seasons, from his 3-year-old year to age eight. He won the GIII Turf Monster H. at Parx in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019, the GIII Parx Dash S. in 2016, 2018 and 2019 and the GIII Jaipur Invitational S. in 2016 at Belmont. In that effort, he set a new six-furlong course record, later bettered by stablemate Disco Partner (Disco Rico) in the same race the following year. Disco Partner, another Generazio homebred, was retired to Rockridge Stud for the 2020 season.

“I’m not sure what Mr. Generazio would like to do yet, whether he wants him retired to the farm or if we can use him as a pony at the track because he would be a very popular pony if I can take him with us to Payson Park,” added Clement about plans for Pure Sensation’s post-racing life.

Hot-Handed Clement Sends Pure Sensation, Shekky Shebaz Into Troy

Christophe Clement, who topped the trainer standings with 15 wins heading into Wednesday's card at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., will look to add to his impressive numbers when he sends out Pure Sensation and Shekky Shebaz in Saturday's Grade 3, $200,000 Troy over the Spa's Mellon turf course.

The Troy, a 5 ½-furlong turf sprint for older males, is one of five graded races on a loaded Runhappy Travers Day card headlined by the Grade 1, $1 million Runhappy Travers at 1 1/4 miles for the country's most talented 3-year-olds. The card is bolstered by the Grade 1, $300,000 Longines Test for sophomore fillies; the Grade 1, $300,000 Ballerina presented by NYRA Bets for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up going seven furlongs and offering a “Win and You're In” berth to the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint; and the Grade 3, $150,000 Waya, a 1 ½-mile turf route for older fillies and mares. The card will be broadcast on Saratoga Live on FOX Sports and MSG Networks.

Patricia Generazio's homebred Pure Sensation, a 9-year-old Zensational gelding, boasts a record of 37-14-5-7 with purse earnings of $2,001,050. The popular grey won 4-of-6 starts last season, including a pair of graded-stakes at Parx where he captured his third Grade 3 Parx Dash [which he also won in 2016-17], and his fourth Grade 3 Turf Monster [2015, 2017-18] at Parx.

Pure Sensation wintered at Payson Park in Florida and made his seasonal debut with a seventh in the Grade 1 Jaipur on June 20 at Belmont Park. He posted a pair of turf works following the Jaipur, including a bullet three-eighths in 37.23 seconds on July 31 on the Oklahoma training turf.

“I was very disappointed with his race in the Jaipur. He was in a speed duel that day and I hope it's the reason that he ran poorly,” said Clement. “He came back and had a very good work on the turf the other day here. He worked well and looks well.”

Pure Sensation will be making his third start in the Troy after finishing sixth in 2018 and third last year. Clement said he's hoping the ultra-consistent Pure Sensation will return to form on Saturday.

“He's 9 years old, so we'll go one race at a time with him,” said Clement. “It's an important race for him as he has to do well in order for me to carry on. He's a very good-looking horse. He still looks very well and he's very sound.”

Kendrick Carmouche, who had guided the gelding to seven wins, has the call from post 5.

Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables and Bethlehem Stables' Shekky Shebaz owns a record of 21-6-5-4 with purse earnings of $382,400 and will look to make the grade in his fourth start of the season.

The 5-year-old Cape Blanco gelding finished third in the 2019 Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in his graded-stakes debut. Last out, making his first start for Clement, Shekky Shebaz closed to finish third in the 5 ½-furlong Wolf Hill at Monmouth Park.

Shekky Shebaz posted a bullet three-eighths breeze in 36.98 Sunday on the Oklahoma turf training course.

“He's had one start with us and ran fair at Monmouth,” said Clement. “He ran wide all the way. He also looks good and trained well on the grass here. Irad knows him well, so we'll give him a shot.”

Shekky Shebaz will exit post 4 under Irad Ortiz, Jr.

Breeze Easy's Imprimis, a seven-time winner from 13 starts for trainer Joe Orseno, is winless in four starts since taking the 2019 Grade 2 Shakertown in April at Keeneland.

The 6-year-old Broken Vow gelding shipped to Ascot last June for the Group 1 King's Stand and finished sixth. He returned stateside for a three-race fall campaign that included a fourth in the Grade 3 Runhappy Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs; a third in the Grade 2 Woodford at Keeneland and a sixth in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita.

Jose Ortiz, who guided Imprimis to victory in the 2018 Wolf Hill at Monmouth Park, will pilot Imprimis from the inside post.

Rounding out the field is American Sailor [post 2, Tyler Gaffalione], Lonhtwist [post 3, John Velazquez], Pulsate [post 6, Manny Franco], and Chewing Gum [post 7, Joel Rosario].

The Troy is slated as Race 8 on Saturday's 12-race card, which offers a first post of 12 p.m. Eastern. Saratoga Live will present daily television coverage of the 40-day summer meet on FOX Sports and MSG Networks.
