Princess Noor Rules in Del Mar Debutante

Already with a GI Kentucky Derby victory in the bag, Bob Baffert got another superstar performance from one of his charges this weekend, as ‘TDN Rising Star’ Princess Noor (Not This Time) ran away to an explosive victory in the GI Del Mar Debutante Sunday at the seaside oval.

Topping the delayed OBS April sale when hammering to Gary Young for $1.35 million following a dazzling :20 1/5 quarter-mile breeze, the dark bay did not disappoint when unveiled locally Aug. 22, going wire to wire essentially on her own power the entire race. Back on relatively short rest here, she was pounded down to odds-on from an 8-5 morning-line quote.

Breaking inwardly, bumping into second choice and GII Sorrento S. heroine My Girl Red (Texas Red) and squeezing that one back to last, Princess Noor settled in a three-wide third as barnmate Illumination (Medaglia d’Oro) dictated terms through a :23.01 quarter. My Girl Red, who never got involved, was pulled up at that point. The favorite moved in tandem with Forest Caraway (Bodemeister) to overhaul the frontrunner past a :45.49 half, but was going easier of the two and left the other two behind at the top of the stretch.

Drifting in a bit once set down, she straightened quickly, asserted herself fully past the furlong grounds and was under wraps for much of the remainder for an extremely auspicious romp. Forest Caraway held for second. The stewards posted an inquiry regarding the winner’s leftward break, but no action was taken.

“We knew going in she was a special filly,” said Baffert. “She showed so much brilliance at the sale, that’s why she cost so much, and we got what we expected to see today. She broke a little off kilter and was behind horses, but Victor didn’t really push her, especially at the end. We’re happy to get the win. We’ll run her back at Santa Anita and then go from there.”

“She’s a little green. Only her second time [to race],” added winning rider Victor Espinoza. “Coming away from there she went in a bit and I tried to get her off as quickly as I could. You try to control the babies as best as you can, especially at the break. My filly was OK from there. I really don’t know how good she is, because I haven’t let her run yet. It’s nice to be back at Del Mar and riding good horses.”

The first stakes winner for red-hot freshman sire Not This Time, Princess Noor completed a sweep for first-crop stallions in Sunday’s Grade I juvenile races after Vequist (Nyquist) romped in the GI Spinaway S. at Saratoga. She is the second foal to race for Sheza Smoke Show, an upset victress of the GIII Senorita S. on turf for Peter Eurton in 2014. Both her second dam and third dam are stakes winners. A $185,000 purchase at Keeneland November in 2017, Sheza Smoke Show has a yearling colt by Protonico and foaled a Tapwrit filly Feb. 19 before returning to the former sire.

Juvenile Fillies in Spotlight at Del Mar and Saratoga Sunday

Juvenile fillies take center stage in a pair of Grade I events at Del Mar and Saratoga Sunday.

Zedan Racing Stables, Inc.’s Princess Noor (Not This Time) headlines a field of six set for the GI Del Mar Debutante S. After topping the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training at $1.35 million, she ran to the billing with a ‘TDN Rising Star’ performance on debut for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert at Del Mar Aug. 22.

She takes on the unbeaten My Girl Red (Texas Red), who made it two-for-two with a 4 3/4-length victory over first-time starter Get On the Bus (Uncle Mo) in the GII Sorrento S. Aug. 7.

A field of six will also line up for Saratoga’s GI Spinaway S.

‘TDN Rising Star’ Beautiful Memories (Hard Spun), a double-digit debut winner at Churchill Downs May 28, gets the nod as the 9-5 morning-line favorite despite being pulled up as the heavy favorite in the GIII Schuylerville S. last time July 16. She, however, bounced back with a flashy four-furlong bullet in :46 1/5 (1/14) for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse at Saratoga Aug. 5.

The Ohio-bred Esplanande (Daredevil) puts a perfect three-for-three record on the line. She beat the boys in her last two stakes attempts, including a win in the Best of Ohio Cleveland Kindergarten S. at Thistledown Aug. 8.

Pricey Princess Noor Leads Field For Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante

Zedan Racing Stables' Princess Noor, a $1.35 million purchase at auction earlier this year, appears a solid choice at Del Mar Sunday when she heads a lineup of six juvenile fillies in the 70th edition of the Grade 1, $250,000 Del Mar Debutante.

Princess Noor “won for fun” in her straight maiden debut at the shore oval on Aug. 22 under Victor Espinoza and is wheeled back 15 days later in quest of her first chunk of black type. The rider put his charge on the lead out of the gate, then never asked her late in her bow and she just cruised away from six rivals that day to tally by two and a half lengths. She's worked twice since for conditioner Bob Baffert and the daughter of the Giant's Causeway sire Not This Time could take a lot of catching on Sunday.

Here's the full field for the seven furlong headliner from the rail out with riders and morning line odds:  Reddam Racing's Get On the Bus (Mario Gutierrez, 8-1); Dale F Taylor Racing, Taylor, et al's Roll Up Mo Money (Drayden Van Dyke, 12-1); Erich G. Brehm's My Girl Red (Flavien Prat, 3-1); Princess Noor (8/5); Bolton, Leidel or Lipman, et al's Illumination (Abel Cedillo, 4-1), and Phoenix Thoroughbred's Forest Caraway (Ricky Gonzalez, 7/2).

Princess Noor's chief rival appears to be the Texas Red filly My Girl Red, who trains out of the barn of J. Keith Desormeaux. The bay miss has raced twice and won both, most recently in the G2 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 7. Desormeaux and owner/breeder Brehm raced My Girl Red's daddy, winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile with him, several other major stakes and more than $1.6 million.

Get On the Bus began her career in the Sorrento and was a good second to My Girl Red that day. The Uncle Mo filly, a $340,000 purchase at a 2-year-old in training sale in March, has trained well for Doug O'Neill since that start and should move forward from her racing experience.

Forest Caraway was a winner of her lone outing, a straight maiden sprint at Del Mar on Aug. 15. The bay daughter of Bodemeister races out of the Peter Miller barn.

Roll Up Mo Money, also an Uncle Mo offspring, won her debut at Del Mar on Aug. 2, capturing a five-furlong dash by a length and a quarter. She's put in four solid works for trainer Jeff Mullins since.

Illumination chased home Forest Caraway in her first attempt at afternoon racing. The Medaglia d'Oro miss was a $900,000 yearling purchase and she also is under the training care of Hall of Fame conditioner Baffert.

The Del Mar Debutante, one of three stakes Sunday, goes as the ninth race on an 11-race card. First post on Sunday is 1 p.m.

Not This Time OBS Topper Fast As Advertised; Gets ‘Rising Star’ Nod

Zedan Racing Stables, Inc.’s Princess Noor (Not This Time), who topped the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training at $1.35 million off of a blazingly fast :20 1/5 breeze, ran to the hype and her price tag Saturday at Del Mar to be named a ‘TDN Rising Star’ and become her fast-starting freshman sire (by Giant’s Causeway)’s seventh individual winner. The $135,000 KEESEP yearling had fired a couple of bullet breezes from the gate in her preparations for trainer Bob Baffert (including a best-of-seven 1:12.20 July 31 in which her company was never in the same area code {XBTV video}), and was pounded down to 3-5 favoritism with her chief market rival stablemate Flash Magic (Pioneerof the Nile). Showing off her ample speed to blast from the gate and immediately clear off, Princess Noor zipped along through a :22.39 quarter and :46.05 half. Victor Espinoza never asked her to run as she cruised under the line 2 1/2 lengths to the good of Flash Magic, stopping the clock in 1:04.03.

“We knew that she was a special horse from the sales all the way into training,” owner Amr Zedan told the TDN after watching the race from Saudi Arabia, where it was after midnight. “Obviously, Bob has done a great job in getting her ready. We came into the race humble, but focused and hoping she would show the best she could do and would come out of it sound. I would like to thank Gary Young, my racing manager, for all he’s done for us.”

When asked if there was any added pressure with the winner being named after his wife, Jordan’s Princess HRH Noor Bint Asem, Zedan said, “There was a lot of anxiety, but she did what we hoped and prayed she would do and she showed some ability. I don’t know yet what Bob’s plans are, as you know he’s the boss when it comes to everything with the horse at the moment. We will follow his lead and hope for the best. We will take it a race at a time and hopefully we will get to the big races soon.”

Young, who said the GI Del Mar Debutante S. in 15 days; GI Frizette S. at Belmont or GI Chandelier S. at Santa Anita would all be under consideration for Princess Noor’s next start, added, “There was a race earlier in the meet at three-quarters that we entered her in and it didn’t go, so we had to work her. Her work after that was good, but it wasn’t what we expected for her. Bob liked her so much that he basically said he wanted to work her again to make sure. And that last work out of the gate was jaw-dropping (5f, 1:00 flat, 12/95 on Aug. 15). We ran her here and she ran to her workouts. Her workouts were just unbelievable. The way she was at the sale and the money we paid for her and the way she trained for this race, anything less than an authoritative victory would have been disappointing. But I think we definitely got that authoritative victory today. I actually for the first time in my career, I took my stopwatch out there to gallop her out after the race. She galloped out three-quarters in 1:10.22 and she pulled up seven furlongs in 1:26.34. When they start galloping out six furlongs in 1:10.22 after the wire, that’s pretty good.”

Young, a renowned private clocker, was celebrating his first victory from as many starters as Zedan’s racing manager.

“It can only go down from here,” he quipped. “When you start out like that you can only go down. We put the bar awful high today. It’s like the guy who hits a grand slam home run in his first at bat to get his team into the playoffs.”

The winner’s dam Sheza Smoke Show (Wilko) took the 2014 GIII Senorita S. as a sophomore on the Santa Anita lawn. She was purchased by Ousama Aboughazale’s International Equities Holding, Inc. for $185,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November sale while carrying Princess Noor. Sheza Smoke Show produced a colt by Aboughazale’s Protonico in 2019 and a Tapwrit filly in 2020. She was bred back to Protonico this breeding season.
