GII Presque Isle Downs Masters S. Serves As Monday’s Feature

After a weekend of graded racing action from Aqueduct to Woodbine, the scene shifts on Monday to Presque Isle Downs as they host the Masters S., a Grade II event going six and a half furlongs over the Tapeta. Out of this field of 12, most of the gravitas will be directed towards Roses for Debra (Liam's Map). With seven wins over nine races, the 4-year-old gray filly won the GIII Caress S. at Saratoga July 22 and then followed that up over the same turf course with a victory in the Smart N Fancy S. Aug. 25. Her ability to rate just off the speed makes her very dangerous and she's a deserving morning-line favorite at 7-5 from the barn of Christophe Clement. Opposing her though is the last out winner of the GIII Hendrie S. July 22 at Woodbine. From Josie Carroll's shedrow, Loyalty (Hard Spun) looks the part and has a win over this track when she won last year's Lady Erie S. The '23 edition of that black-type race was won by Jill Jitterburg (Cross Traffic), who enters here for Ryan Walsh. Also, not to be overlooked is Accomplished Girl (Street Boss) as she tries stakes company for the second time in her career under Saffie Joseph Jr. The post GII Presque Isle Downs Masters S. What’s In A Name? Kenwick, Just F Y I, Gordian Knot, Praetorian Guard

The promising 2-eary-old filly Kenwick (Bernardini) may have won in Pennsylvania, but her pedigree shouts Lexington KY from the very rooftops of two local neighborhoods. Kenwick is a central residential area of the city, while Bell Court, as in the dam's name, is an almost adjacent zone, closer to downtown. Both areas have an Old America feel to them: nothing fake, nothing too gentrified, just authentic, with a touch of Thornton Wilder's “Our Town” ambiance. There is in fact a small theatre in the Bell House in Bell Court: the lovely Carriage House Theatre. Lexington visitors! The “Kenwick Table” locale on Owsley Road in Kenwick is the best for the weary traveler: coffee, live music (with an open mike on Monday evenings), beer & wine on the menu, two patios, out-of-this-world elegance – in a word: cool, like its equine namesake, who “got through a razor-thin hole” on the rail to go and win her race.

The name of Saratoga winning filly Just F Y I (Justify) is a sort of an anagram (rearrangement of letters to form another name) of the moniker of her dad – which is kind of unusual and brave, and therefore worthy of praise. She won on her debut, so novelty and quality are part of her repertoire.

There was horseracing in antiquity, and there is antiquity in modern horseracing. So much so that a recent sprint stakes race at Parx Racing Aug. 22 produced a very classical exacta, with a close finish. The winner is called Gordian Knot (Social Inclusion), as in the famous head-scratching problem solved by Alexander The Great with a dramatic blow of his sword on his way to conquering Asia. The runner-up is named Praetorian Guard (Speightster), after the dangerous posse of Roman Emperors – made up of veteran bodyguards who on occasion became a mortal danger to the very ruler they were to protect. “No one reigns innocently”, as it has been said.

Not This Time Colt Breaks Maiden On The Bridle at Presque Isle

4th-Presque Isle Downs, $30,150, Msw, 9-5, 2yo, 6f (AWT), 1:10.67, ft, 4 3/4 lengths.
BANNEKER (c, 2, Not This Time–Bosserette, by Street Boss), a $210,000 Keeneland September purchase, was the lone firster in a field of five and turned in a dominating debut effort. Off as the 29-10 second choice, the attractive dark bay broke on terms, but was content to take a trail from third through the middle stages. Going ominously well under a full-Nelson nearing the stretch, he was eased out and around odds-on Hector (Maclean's Music) in upper stretch and went on to score with consummate and impressive ease while never off the bridle. The winner's dam is also represented by a yearling Brody's Cause colt, a weanling filly by Creative Cause and was most recently bred to yet another Giant's Causeway-line stallion in the form of Mitole. Sales history: $210,000 Ylg '22 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $18,000. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV.
