Canter For A Cause At Pimlico Raises Money For TAA

More than 260 riders from throughout the Mid-Atlantic and beyond cantered, walked, and trotted their horses across Pimlico Race Couse in Baltimore, Md., Sunday while raising awareness and money for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) as part of Canter for a Cause.

Sponsored by the Maryland Jockey Club, riders registered to go out in one of four groups between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to take their horse around Pimlico as well as walk through the starting gate and get their picture taken in the winner's circle.

“The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is honored to be the charity of choice for Canter for a Cause once again,” said Stacie Clark Rogers, operations consultant for TAA. “It's always so great to see so many people eager to support accredited Thoroughbred aftercare and have some fun while doing it. Thank you to 1/ST for hosting the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and for all that they do for our horses.”

Many of the 260 riders brought their retired Thoroughbreds, including Heather Beygo who took a trip across the track with the retired gelding Ricky Ricky, and Jennifer Williams who rode Miss Dani Kaye.

“It was very exhilarating bringing him back to the track,” Beygo said.

“So much fun,” Williams added. “We had a great time.”

Pimlico Plans ‘Canter For A Cause’ To Benefit Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance

Legendary Pimlico Race Course will once again play host to the popular Canter for a Cause Sunday, Oct. 10, giving the public an opportunity to walk, trot, canter or gallop their favorite horse or pony on the same track that has hosted legends like Seabiscuit and Secretariat.

Sponsored by the Maryland Jockey Club, Canter for a Cause is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is $50 per trip, with proceeds going to benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.

Entries will be taken in four groups – Seabiscuit (walk, trot, canter and gallop), Secretariat (walk, trot and slow canter), War Admiral (walk and trot) and Ben's Cat (leadline). Groups will run every 30 minutes and have 20 to 25 minutes apiece on the track. Participants will also have their picture taken in the winner's circle.

All horses must have proof of a negative Coggins test within 12 months. All riders must sign a waiver and wear approved helmets, and riders under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. No colts, geldings or stallions are allowed.

Pimlico is the second-oldest racetrack in the country, opened in 1870. Known as Old Hilltop and home of the Preakness Stakes (G1), Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown, Pimlico has seen such stars as War Admiral, Affirmed, Curlin, Rachel Alexandra, Gallorette and Smarty Jones race over its main track.

Stronach Group Bans Embattled Trainer Amber Cobb From Its Racetracks

Embattled trainer Amber Cobb, already suspended by the Delaware Racing Commission for her mistreatment of a filly in her barn, has been banned from training and racing at the five racetracks owned by the Stronach Group and 1/ST Racing.

The Stronach Group and 1/ST Racing issued a statement this week regarding Amber Cobb on Friday:

“In August, 1/ST RACING reviewed the video of the abhorrent conduct of Amber Cobb as presented to the Delaware Stewards and we immediately elected to permanently ban her from training and racing at our facilities. Cobb's actions are completely reprehensible and are totally out of line with 1/ST's commitment to safety, integrity, and accountability. 1/ST RACING believes that the care and safety of horses is the duty of all industry stakeholders. Individuals who abuse horses have no place in racing and certainly have no place at any 1/ST RACING venue.”

The five racetracks owned by the Stronach Group include Golden Gate Fields in San Francisco, Calif., Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., Laurel Park in Laurel, Md., and Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md.
