Friday’s Stronach 5: Three Tracks, Five Races In Less Than An Hour

The Stronach 5, featuring a low 12-percent takeout, makes stops Friday at Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields with full fields and two races scheduled for the turf.

The popular wager begins at approximately 4:18 ET at Laurel and concludes less than an hour later at Golden Gate Fields.

The first leg of the Stronach 5 is a $16,000 claimer at Laurel over 5 ½ furlongs on the turf that drew a field of 12 including 2-1 favorite Slippin Jimmy. The 5-year-old gelding, trained by Sarah Nagle, runs for the first time since a fifth-place finish in May at Belmont Park in a $50,000 claimer. Slippin Jimmy has two wins, three seconds and a third in eight starts on the turf. The competition includes So Dialed In, running first off the claim by Ferris Allen, and the lightly raced 5-year-old Bourbon and Ice, trained by Mark Reid.

Gulfstream's sixth race serves as the second leg, a five furlong optional claimer on the turf with a purse of $52,000. Awsum Roar, a winner of 10 races at the distance, is 5-2 in the morning line and will break from the rail for trainer Antonio Sano. Palomita, formerly trained by Chad Brown for e Five Racing, tries the turf for the first time for trainer David Fawkes.

The Stronach 5 returns to Laurel for its ninth race, a restricted, $40,000 allowance test at seven furlongs on the main track. Going to the Lead, who has finished worse than third only once in 14 starts, is the 5-2 morning-line favorite after coming off two consecutive second place finishes by a total of less than a half length. Ain't Da Beer Cold goes out for the second time after a eight-month layoff for Kenneth Cox. Hemp, third in the Chick Lang (G3) earlier this year, is 9-2 and gets Feargal Lynch.

Gulfstream's seventh race is a wide-open mile event for $6,250 non-winners of two claimers with a tepid favorite in Hard Ten, who finished second by a neck last out. Jorge Delgado trains and Chantal Sutherland will ride. Eastern Symphony, trained by Murat Sancal, was last seen finishing fourth at Keeneland in May in a $20,000 claimer. Luca Panici rides. Bad Boy E.J. and Feeling Dangerous both take a drop in company.

The Stronach 5 concludes with Golden Gate's second race, a maiden claiming event at a mile. Predetermination, the 2-1 favorite, gets the rail for trainer Andy Mathis and stretches out from 5 ½ furlongs last out. Evening Ambition, eighth in her debut Sept. 5, and Lady Doc both gets blinkers.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

Stronach 5 Returns Friday With Four Turf Races From Gulfstream, Laurel

The Stronach 5, offering a low 12-percent takeout, returns Friday with the first four races in the sequence on the turf from Gulfstream Park and Laurel Park.

The Stronach 5 kicks off at 4:12 ET with Gulfstream's fifth races and concludes at approximately 5:45 with the third race at Golden Gate Fields.

The first leg of the Stronach 5 is a maiden special weight event at 7 ½ furlongs on Gulfstream's turf for 2-year-old fillies. Ocean Safari, a daughter of Temple City, will break from the rail. The filly makes her second start for trainer Gilberto Zerpa after finishing third by a neck in her debut July 31. Palmach, a daughter of Violence, makes her debut for trainer Mark Casse and jockey Edwin Gonzalez. Casse will also send out Keen Contender, third in her debut Aug. 6.

The Stronach 5 heads to Laurel for the second and third legs. Laurel's eighth race, a $48,000 allowance event at 5 ½ furlongs for 3-year-olds and up, drew a dozen including Town of Gold, who has placed first, second or third in five of six starts on the turf. Trained by Jorge Duarte Jr., Town of Gold, a son of Speightstown, was seventh at Monmouth under similar conditions last out after a six-month layoff. Prince Pere, who has placed first, second or third in four of five turf starts, goes out for Michael Merryman and jockey Sheldon Russell. Hard to Be Humble goes out first off the claim for Hugh McMahon.

Laurel's ninth race, the third leg of the sequence, is a claiming event at 5 ½ furlongs for 3, 4, and 5-year-old maidens. Fake I D drops a bit in class for Sarah Nagle while making his fourth start. Gambling Man, a 3-year-old son of Seville, makes his debut for Aimee Hall.

Gulfstream's seventh race, a mile turf event for 3-year-olds and up, is a competitive 10-horse field. Rocket Joe Copper, a five-time winner on the turf for Kathleen O'Connell, comes into the race off a 7-length victory over a sloppy main track. Sharm El Sheikh comes into the race off a victory over the turf for trainer Murat Sancal. Positive Phil won two consecutive races in May and June before finishing ninth in his last and being claimed by Alfredo Cazares.

The Stronach 5 concludes at Golden Gate Fields with the third race, a one-mile event for claimers 3 and up. Jonathan Wong sends out Drasario. The 4-year-old gelded son of Dragon Pulse hopes to break his maiden in his 15th start while drawing the rail.

Virginia Derby Highlights All-Stakes, All-Turf Pick-5 Tuesday At Colonial Downs

A field of 12 will go to post in the 18th running of the Grade 3 New Kent County Virginia Derby presented by Woodford Reserve on Tuesday August 31 at Colonial Downs, featured event of five stakes on the card and eleven races in all.

The Derby carries a purse of $250,000 and will be contested at 1 1/8 miles over the track's signature Secretariat Turf Course. Programmed as the tenth race, it will be the final leg of an All-Stakes, All-Turf Pick-5 wager covering races 6-10 that kicks off with the $150,000 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Old Nelson Stakes and continues with the $100,000 Woodford Reserve Kitten's Joy Stakes, the $100,000 Exacta Systems Rosie's Stakes and the $150,000 Woodford Reserve Virginia Oaks. First post Tuesday is 1:45 PM and the Derby itself is at 6:14 PM.

The top three finishers from the Bald Eagle Derby at Pimlico July 24 all return to square off in the Virginia Derby and all are early favorites.

With only two lifetime starts, Augustin Stable's Experienced was a solid runner-up in the Bald Eagle last out which followed a maiden special weight score over the Delaware turf June 21. Jonathan Thomas conditions the Temple City gelding who is favored at 7-2. Manuel Franco will be in the irons.

Augustin Stable is seeking their third Virginia Derby win. They scored in the 1998 inaugural edition with Crowd Pleaser and three years later with Potaro.

Gap View Stables and Jagger Inc.'s Indian Lake, a gate-to-wire winner in the Bald Eagle, is co-second favorite at 5-1. The 3-year-old Daredevil gelding has finished in-the-money in 16 of 17 career starts and has earnings of $222,408, highest of any in the field. The Jamie Ness trainee has a trio of allowance wins this year, a runner-up in the Jersey Derby and a third in the Sussex Stakes. Ruben Silvera will ride.

Madaket Stables LLC's Wootton Asset, third place finisher in the Bald Eagle, is trained by Graham Motion who won the 2019 Virginia Derby with English Bee. The 3-year-old Wootton Bassett colt, also 5-1, took third in the Grade 3 Kent Stakes July 3 and finished second by a nose in the Laurel Futurity last October. He has bankrolled $100,245 from nine turf starts. Jose Ortiz has the mount.

Gallagher's Stud's Search For Truth dominated a Colonial maiden special weight race by 11 1/2 lengths August 10 at the 1 1/8 miles distance and is 8-1 in the Derby. The Michael Dickinson trainee's only other start came over a soft turf at Delaware where he rallied from fifth at the top of the stretch to finish second. Joe Rocco Jr., who rode the Tourist colt to victory three weeks ago, is back up top.

Also at 8-1, L and N Racing's Hidden Enemy only has one win from ten starts but has faced tough competition in his last four outs. The Steve Asmussen trainee was fourth in the Grade 2 American Turf at Churchill May 1 then finished ninth in the $1 million, Grade I Belmont Derby July 10. The Irish-bred son of Galileo broke his maiden March 21 at Fair Grounds. Feargal Lynch will ride.

Red Oak Stable's It Can Be Done, 10-1 early, has bankrolled $177,330 from ten starts including a win in the Nownownow Stakes at Monmouth last October. The Temple City gelding finished a solid second last out in the Tale of the Cat Stakes and lost by a neck March 27 in the Cutler Bay at Gulfstream. The Greg Sacco trainee has competed in six stakes thus far. Jose Ferrer is the jockey.

Rounding out the Derby field is Savesnine Corporation's Draft Capital, McCarty Racing LLC's Doubleoseven, Bourbon Lane Stable's Hard Rye Guy, Deuce Greathouse's Shady McGee, Jerry Marks Stables LLC's Slicked Back and Carmen Catizone's Eye of the Cat.

Twelve 3-year-old fillies have entered the 12th running of the $150,000 Woodford Reserve Virginia Oaks, also at 1 1/8 miles, led by morning line favorite Por Que No. Owned by Fano Racing, the daughter of Wicked Strong has won five of seven career starts including a gate-to-wire win in the Boiling Springs Stakes most recently.

A field of seven 2-year-olds will compete 5 1/2 furlongs in the 2nd running of the $100,000 Exacta Systems Rosie's Stakes. Tom Durant's Tejano Twist, fresh off a three length maiden special weight win at Colonial August 3, is favored at 5-2. Rocco Jr. will ride for trainer Bret Calhoun.

Six 2-year-olds will stretch out at 1 1/16th miles in the $100,000 Woodford Reserve Kitten's Joy Stakes. Jeremy Brooks' Wow Whata Summer is 5-2 early based on a pair of starts at the current New Kent meet. The Summer Front colt finished a close third in the Virginia-restricted Hickory Tree Stakes August 2, which followed a maiden special weight race July 20 where the James Lawrence trainee was bumped up from second after initial winner Capt. Candy was disqualified.

The $150,000 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Old Nelson Stakes kicks off the Pick-5 with a field of eight fillies and mares at the 1 1/16th miles distance. Randall Bloch and Six Column Stables' Market Rumor is favored at 3-1. The Afleet Alex filly has bankrolled $229,270 from 14 starts including an allowance victory last out at Gulfstream.

Saratoga, Del Mar Team Up For All-Graded Stakes Cross Country Pick 5

The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 featuring all graded stakes action from Saratoga and Del Mar. The sequence will include three Grade 1s and a pair of Grade 2 contests.

Saratoga will host the first two legs of the sequence, starting with the Grade 2, $200,000 Lake Placid for 3-year-old fillies competing at 1 1/16 miles on the Mellon turf course in Race 9 at 5:39 p.m. Eastern. The Chad Brown-trained Technical Analysis will look to duplicate her effort from when she won the Grade 3 Lake George on July 23 over the Saratoga inner turf. Spanish Loveaffair, who faced top-flight competition last out in running eighth in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational in the opening leg of NYRA's Turf Triple series on July 10, will be sent out by Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse. New York-bred Runaway Rumour won her first three starts for trainer Jorge Abreu, including an off-the-pace half-length victory in the Wild Applause in June at Belmont Park going one mile. After running fourth in the Lake George in her first run over the Saratoga grass, the Flintshire filly will return to the Spa.

The featured race at Saratoga, the Grade 1, $600,000 Alabama, will see Malathaat out for revenge against Maracuja after the latter's last-out win in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks on July 24 at Saratoga. Malathaat was a hard-fought winner of the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks on April 30 at Churchill Downs and captured the Grade 1 Ashland on April 3 at Keeneland. A victory in the Alabama would make Malathaat the fifth filly in the past decade to capture the Kentucky Oaks-Alabama double. For Maracuja, a win in the Alabama would make her the fifth horse in the last decade to score the CCA Oaks-Alabama double. Crazy Beautiful, the winner of the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks on March 27, ran 10th in the Kentucky Oaks. But the Kenneth McPeek trainee rebounded to win the Grade 3 Summertime Oaks on May 30 at Santa Anita ahead of a six-length romp in the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks on July 3 at Delaware Park.

Del Mar will host the concluding three legs, starting with the Grade 1, $300,000 Del Mar Oaks for 3-year-old fillies going 1 1/8 miles on the turf in Race 9 at 9 p.m. Eastern. The Brown-trained Fluffy Socks, the Lake George runner-up last month, will be returning to the track where she won the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante in November. Madone, a winner of 5-of-7 starts for trainer Simon Callaghan, enters from a rallying win in the Grade 2 San Clemente on July 24 at Del Mar. The Irish-bred Feathers, trained by Peter Miller, will make her graded stakes debut, while fellow Irish-bred Soaring Sky will make her North American debut for conditioner Jessica Harrington.

The Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic for 3-year-olds and up will be contested in Race 10 at 9:30 p.m. as a nine-horse field competes at 1 1/4 miles on the main track. Express Train, winner of the San Diego Handicap, was installed the 3-1 morning line favorite. The Union Rags colt, trained by John Shirreffs, has posted a 4-4-2 record in 12 career starts as he enters the “Win and You're In” qualifier to the Breeders' Cup Classic in November, also held at Del Mar. Royal Ship, trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella, has won six of his 14 starts with earnings of $293,305 and will have the services of Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith. Dr Post, the 2020 Grade 1 Belmont Stakes runner-up who last out won the Grade 3 Monmouth Cup for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher, will also look to make an impact shipping to the West Coast.

Concluding the Cross Country Pick 5 will be the Grade 2, $300,000 Del Mar Handicap in Race 11 at 10 p.m. The 11-horse field for 3-year-olds and up running at 1 3/8 miles on the turf will see Shirreffs send out Astronaut, second in the Grade 3 San Jan Capistrano, square off with the Brad Cox-trained Arklow, who won the Grade 2 Hollywood Turf Cup in November in his previous start at Del Mar.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.
