Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Features Graded Stakes From Saratoga, Del Mar

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 featuring four graded stakes overall and three Grade 1s between historic Saratoga Race Course and Del Mar on Saturday.

Saratoga will start the wager with a full field of juveniles going 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf in Race 5 at 3:28 p.m. Eastern. The maiden contest will feature a pair of entrants for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott in Lease and Thorn, while fellow Hall of Fame conditioner Mark Casse will send out American Diamond from the outermost post 10. Winfromwithin, trained by Todd Pletcher, will break from post 8.

The day's feature race at the Spa will comprise the second leg, as the Casse-trained Got Stormy will look to repeat in the Grade 1, $400,000 Fourstardave in Race 9 at 5:46 p.m. Last year, Got Stormy became the first female to win the Fourstardave, setting a track record for the one-mile inner turf course test by completing the course in 1:32 flat. This year, she drew post 4 with Tyler Gaffalione aboard as she competes against a talented field that includes Eclipse Award-winner Uni, who is one of four runners for trainer Chad Brown along with Raging Bull, Valid Point and Without Parole. Mott will send out a pair in Chewing Gum and Casa Creed. The Fourstardave is a “Win and You're In” qualifier to the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile in November at Keeneland.

Del Mar will feature the wager's final three races with three graded stakes, starting with the Grade 2, $200,000 Del Mar Handicap for 3-year-olds and up going 1 3/8 miles on the turf in Race 7 at 8 p.m. United, who ran in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf last year, will compete in a race that will offer the winner an automatic berth in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf. Combatant won a Grade 1 in March when he captured the Santa Anita Handicap over the main track. The 11-horse field also features Oscar Dominguez, the Irish bred who won the 1 ½-mile Grade 2 Hollywood Turf Cup.

The Grade 1 action continues in the fourth leg in the $250,000 Del Mar Oaks for 3-year-old fillies going 1 1/8 miles on the turf in Race 9 at 9 p.m. Laura's Light, trained by Peter Miller, won the Grade 3 Honeymoon at the same distance. She will face an 11-horse field that includes European horses such as Miss Extra, winner of the Group 2 Prix de Sandringham in France, and the French-bred Neige Blanche, who captured the Group 3 Prix Cleopatre in her native country.

The finale will be the Grade 1, $500,000 Pacific Classic in Race 10 at 9:30 p.m. Maximum Security, who won the Eclipse Award last year as Champion 3-year-old, is 2-for-2 to start his 4-year-old campaign after winning the Saudi Cup and the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap last out. The horse who crossed the wire first in last year's Grade 1 Kentucky Derby before being disqualified and placed 17th and has won four graded stakes since the “Run for the Roses,” taking the Grade 1 Haskell at Monmouth Park, the Grade 3 Bold Ruler at Belmont Park and the Grade 1 Cigar Mile Handicap in December at Aqueduct Racetrack. Now trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Maximum Security is one of six contenders in the 1 ¼-mile test, which includes Midcourt, Higher Power, Mirinaque, Dark Vader and Sharp Samurai.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.

Stakes Schedule Set for Belmont Park Fall Meet

The New York Racing Association, Inc. has announced race dates for the 27-day Belmont fall meet, including 38 stakes worth $5.58 million in purse money, that will kick off Friday, Sept. 18 and run through Sunday, Nov. 1.

Following opening weekend at Belmont, live racing will be conducted Thursday through Sunday with the exception of Columbus Day weekend, when live racing will be offered Monday, Oct. 12 and return Friday, Oct. 16.

The Belmont Park fall meet has traditionally opened on the Friday following Labor Day. Due to the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, NYRA adjusted the fall schedule by adding a one-week break following the conclusion of the summer meet at Saratoga Race Course.

“This new fall schedule is the result of a collaborative effort between NYRA, the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and the New York Thoroughbred Breeders to modify our racing calendar in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on the industry,” said NYRA President and CEO Dave O’Rourke. “I’d like to thank the horsemen and breeders for their common-sense approach to solving the challenges brought about by this unprecedented public health crisis.”

The fall meet at Belmont Park will be highlighted by 22 graded stakes, featuring seven Grade I events and seven Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” qualifiers to the two-day Breeders’ Cup 2020 World Championships to be held Nov. 6-7 at Keeneland Race Course.

The first of the meet’s Grade I events begins with the GI Belmont Oaks Invitational, the second leg of the Turf Triple series for 3-year-old fillies Saturday, Sept. 19.

Five graded races will highlight the Saturday, Oct. 3 card, led by the GI Belmont Derby Invitational, second leg of the Turf Triple series for males, which offers a berth to the GI Breeders’ Cup Turf.

Columbus Day Weekend beginning Saturday, Oct. 10 and ending Monday, Oct. 12, will feature nine graded events worth $1.65 million, including four Grade I Breeders’ Cup “Win & You’re In” challenge races on Saturday led by the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, a “Win and You’re In” for the GI Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The Saturday, Oct. 10, card is bolstered by the GI Champagne, which provides a spot in the starting gate for the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

The card also includes the GI Flower Bowl with a berth in the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf on the line; the GI Frizette offering a berth in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

New York state currently requires all racetracks to operate without spectators in attendance to combat the spread of COVID-19. NYRA will issue updated guidance regarding COVID-19 health and safety protocols for jockeys, trainers and owners in the near future.

NYRA Partners With Ellis Park For Special Sunday Cross Country Pick 5

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 with Ellis Park on Sunday, with historic Saratoga Race Course hosting the first and third legs and the Henderson, Kentucky-based track offering stakes action, including the Runhappy Ellis Park Derby, in the other three races.

The Spa will start the sequence in Race 7 at 4:43 p.m. Eastern with a claiming race for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up going 5 ½ furlongs on the turf. Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen will send out Florida-bred Aunt Nadine, who ran second at Saratoga on July 16. Saratoga meet-leading trainer Christophe Clement will saddle Stretchthestory, a New York-bred who ran fourth in the Tepin on December 5 at Aqueduct Racetrack to cap her juvenile year before starting her sophomore campaign with a seven-place effort off a layoff on June 5 at Belmont Park.

Ellis Park will commence the stakes action in Race 8 at 5:10 p.m. with the first running of the $100,000 Runhappy Audubon Oaks for 3-year-old fillies. An 11-horse field will compete at seven furlongs in the main track. Offering 10-4-2-1 qualifying points to the Kentucky Oaks on September 4 at Churchill Downs, the Audubon Oaks lists Ocean Breeze and Sconsin among the contenders.

Saratoga will be the site of the third leg with Race 8 at 5:17 p.m. Nine sophomores will run at 1 1/8 miles on the inner turf in the allowance tilt, with Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano aboard the George Weaver-trained Our Country from post 2. Clement will send out Shamrocket and City Man, while four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown will saddle Forever Poe. Hall of Famer Bill Mott trains Will Sing for Wine, who drew the outside post.

Ellis Park will conclude the action with the final two races. A full 12-horse field was drawn for the $100,000 Groupie Doll for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up in Race 9 at 5:40 p.m. The one-mile main track route will see Street Band, from post 12, allowing Ellis Park fans the chance to witness the 2019 Grade 1 Cotillion winner in action in her first race in nearly four months, when she ran fourth in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom on April 18 at Oaklawn Park.

The finale will feature the third running of the $200,000 Runhappy Ellis Park Derby for 3-year-olds going 1 1/8 miles in Race 10 at 6:10 p.m. The race offers 85 points [50-20-10-5] to the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on September 5. After the Grade 1, $1 million Runhappy Travers on Saturday at Saratoga, the Runhappy Ellis Park Derby is the next-to-last points race on the revised prep schedule, with only the Pegasus [20-8-4-2] on August 15 at Monmouth Park remaining.

In the Runhappy Ellis Park Derby, Grade 2 Blue Grass-winner Art Collector will look to add more points for the “Run for the Roses.” The Thomas Drury, Jr. trainee is 4-1-0 in eight career starts.

Runhappy Travers Returns to FOX Sports

For the second consecutive year, the $1-million GI Runhappy Travers S. at Saratoga will be televised live on the FOX Sports broadcast network as part of a 1 1/2-hour telecast from 5:00-6:30 p.m. ET Saturday.

Post time for the 151st running of the Runhappy Travers, featuring a showdown between GI Belmont S. winner Tiz the Law (Constitution) and the unbeaten Bob Baffert-trained Uncle Chuck (Uncle Mo), is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. ET.

An expanded Runhappy Travers Day edition of Saratoga Live, presented by America’s Best Racing, Runhappy and Claiborne Farm, will air nationally on FS1 beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET.

Coverage and analysis of the day’s races then shifts to FS2 beginning at 3:00 p.m. ET and continues throughout the afternoon on FS1/FS2.

The complete Runhappy Travers broadcast can also be viewed live on the TDN homepage at www.thetdn.com.

With this year’s Saratoga summer meet currently closed to spectators, Saturday’s Runhappy Travers Day coverage on Saratoga Live will leverage 32 cameras at various locations throughout the property to capture all the action. The broadcast will also include the introduction of the “WinStar Cam,” which will provide in-race aerial coverage throughout the day.

“This exceeds the amount of cameras that you would see during a major league baseball telecast, college basketball, college football,” Tony Allevato, President of NYRA Bets & Executive Producer for NYRA TV, said on a conference call Thursday afternoon. “We’re excited. We’ve got a good show ahead of us. It’s a unique year across the country and it’s a unique year for horse racing with the Triple Crown being run out of order and the Travers being run in the middle of the Triple Crown. It’s really an unprecedented time, but it’s also made for some great story lines, and hopefully we’ll be able to convey that on the show.”
