Martin Panza to Leave NYRA

Martin Panza will leave his position as Senior Vice President of Racing Operations at the New York Racing Association (NYRA) effective at the conclusion of the Belmont Park fall meet Oct. 31. Panza has been in charge of the leadership and oversight of racing functions at NYRA since he joined the organization in 2013. He has also been responsible for the overall development, planning, and execution of NYRA's stakes offerings and daily racing programs, including changing the scheduling of major stakes on individual days to blockbuster events featuring multiple significant races. The strategy has resulted in deep cards for Travers and Whitney days at Saratoga Race Course and the three-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival and Stars and Stripes Racing Festival at Belmont Park. Panza was also instrumental in the creation of the Turf Triple Series, which is a 3-year-old turf program emulating the American dirt Classics.

“Martin has successfully maintained the history and traditions of New York racing while also modernizing the program to adapt to changes in the sport and the overall industry,” said NYRA President and CEO Dave O'Rourke. “His contributions have strengthened Thoroughbred racing here in New York and across our sport. During his tenure, Martin has established a talented racing office team that will serve as the foundation for continued success. We extend our thanks to Martin for his years of service to NYRA and wish him the best as he enters a new phase in his career.”

During his time at NYRA, Panza played a leading role in the formation of a coalition of leading Thoroughbred racing associations and organizations committed to phasing out the use of Lasix. NYRA and its coalition partners eliminated the use of Lasix in all 2-year-old races in 2020, followed by all stakes races in 2021. As a direct result, all three Triple Crown races are now contested without the use of raceday medication.

“I would like to thank my colleagues at NYRA and the NYRA Board of Directors for their dedication to this organization and the sport, which has allowed us to innovate together to enhance NYRA's world class racing product,” said Panza. “I'd also like to thank the horsemen, jockeys, and horseplayers who support our racing on a daily basis throughout the year.”

Panza is on the board of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), the Racetrack Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC), and the Thoroughbred Racing Association (TRA). He also serves on the advisory board of the University of Arizona Racetrack Industry Program (RTIP). In addition, Panza has served on a number of racing committees, including the American Graded Stakes Committee, the Breeders' Cup Selection Committee, and the North American Ratings Committee. Panza also served as chair of the NTRA Safety Committee, which established the NTRA Code of Safety Standards. NYRA was also a founding member of the Thoroughbred Safety Coalition under Panza's leadership.

Over the eight years of Panza's tenure at NYRA, the organization has embarked on a sustained effort to recruit prominent international horses and trainers to compete on the New York circuit. This initiative, led by Panza, has generated an increase in global interest in NYRA and strengthened the foundation of New York racing.

“I've been lucky to have learned the craft from some of the best in the business,” Panza added. “It's a responsibility to share that knowledge with the next generation, and I look forward to watching the NYRA racing office flourish and succeed for many years to come.”

NYRA To Host Cross-Breed Cross Country Pick 5 On Aug. 7

The New York Racing Association Inc. (NYRA) will host an all-stakes cross-breed Cross Country Pick 5 featuring Thoroughbred racing from historic Saratoga Race Course and Monmouth Park and Standardbred racing from the Meadowlands on Aug. 7.

Free Equibase past performances for the Cross Country Pick 5 sequence are now available for download at https://www.nyra.com/saratoga/racing/cross-country-wagers.

Current New York State regulations allow NYRA to accept wagering only on Standardbred races that take place in New York. As such, the cross-breed Cross Country Pick 5 will not be available on-track at Saratoga or to NYRA Bets customers located in New York State. The cross-breed Cross Country Pick 5 is available to NYRA Bets, LLC customers outside of New York State.

Saratoga will kick off the sequence in a big way, offering up the Grade 1, $1 million Saratoga Derby Invitational for 3-year-olds going 1 3/16 miles on the Mellon turf course in Race 9 at 5:10 p.m. Eastern. The middle jewel of NYRA's Turf Triple series drew an accomplished 11-horse field offering some of the top grass sophomores on either side of the Atlantic.

Internationally acclaimed trainer Aidan O'Brien will send out Bolshoi Ballet, who won the first leg of this series by capturing the 10-furlong G1 Belmont Derby Invitational in July. Ryan Moore, a three-time champion jockey in his native Great Britain, will return to ride. Cadillac, an Irish-bred son of Lope de Vega, cruised to victory in the one-mile G2 Champions Juvenile in September at Leopardstown for trainer Jessica Harrington. On the domestic side, the Kentucky-bred Du Jour, the winner of the 1 1/16-mile G2 American Turf in May at Churchill Downs, will be running for the first time since finishing fourth in the Belmont Derby for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott.

Monmouth, located in Oceanport, N.J., will also get in on the stakes action in the second leg as a field of 10 juveniles will compete in the $100,000 Tyro sprinting five furlongs on the turf in Race 12 at 5:26 p.m. Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, who entered Thursday with 9,443 wins as he approaches Dale Baird's all-time record of 9,445, will send out Vodka N Water, who will be looking for a bit of racing luck after running second in all four of his career starts, including last out in the G3 Bashford Manor at Churchill. Forty Stripes, a first-out winner last month at Monmouth for Hall of Fame conditioner Jerry Hollendorfer, will make his first stakes appearance and Wesley Ward will saddle a pair of fillies in maiden winner Chi Town Lady and Her World, a first-time starter purchased for $400,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Harness racing will add a new wrinkle to the Cross Country Pick 5, with the Meadowlands hosting the $500,000 Hambletonian Oaks for 3-year-old fillies in the prestigious race for trotters in Race 14 at 5:32 p.m. Bella Bellini is the 3-1 morning-line favorite. Lady Chaos is the second choice at 7-2.

The featured race on Saratoga's loaded Saturday card will comprise the fourth leg of the wager, with the G1 Whitney in Race 10 at 5:48 p.m. The 1 1/8-mile contest for older horses drew a talented five-horse field led by 6-5 morning-line favorite Knicks Go, who won last year's G1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland before capturing the G1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational to start his 5-year-old year in January at Gulfstream. Knicks Go, conditioned by reigning Eclipse Award-champion trainer Brad Cox, drew post 4.

Five-time graded stakes-winner Maxfield, listed at 8-5, drew the outside post for trainer Brendan Walsh. Defending Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Swiss Skydiver will look for similar success for trainer Kenneth McPeek. Silver State, trained by Asmussen, and By My Standards [Bret Calhoun] will also look to make an impact.

Standardbreds will close out the Cross Country Pick 5 with the 96th running of the $1 million Hambletonian for trotters in Race 15 at 6:02 p.m. The Hambletonian, one of harness racing's best-known events, originated in Syracuse in 1926 and has been held at the Meadowlands since 1981. Ake Svanstedt holds a strong hand with 3-1 morning-line favorite Captain Corey and second-choice Delayed Hanover [7-2].

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.

The Cross Country Pick 5 will continue each Saturday throughout the year. For more information, visit NYRABets.com.

Cross Country Pick 5 – Saturday, Aug. 7:
Leg A: Saratoga – Race 9, G1 Saratoga Derby Invitational (5:10 p.m.)
Leg B: Monmouth – Race 12, Tyro (5:26 p.m.)
Leg C: Meadowlands – Race 14, Hambletonian Oaks (harness) (5:32 p.m.)

NYRA, FOX Sports TV Analyst Acacia Courtney Joins Writers’ Room

One of the stars of the successful New York Racing Association and Fox Sports daily broadcast from Saratoga, Acacia Courtney joined the TDN Writers' Room podcast presented by Keeneland Wednesday morning. Calling in via Zoom as the Green Group Guest of the Week, Courtney gave her impressions on the early part of the Saratoga meet and talked strategy when it comes to analyzing the 2-year-old races that are so integral to the programs at the Spa.

Asked about the different feeling in the air at tracks this year with fans back in attendance, Courtney said, “One of the greatest things about horse racing is the swell of the crowd and people cheering. If there's a photo finish, you hear the groan one way or the other. I think that throughout the past year, we almost kind of got used to it being quiet. So opening day just felt so great. Everybody seemed happy, everybody was enjoying themselves, even if their tickets were losing, and getting a chance to see some of the fans, people coming over and saying that they had watched our show during quarantine and how much they appreciated what we had been doing really meant a lot because–and I always say you don't want to sound spoiled because I was one of the few people that got to be at Saratoga last summer. But you were drained at the end of the day because there was no crowd. There wasn't the same level of excitement as there is this year.”

Elsewhere in the show, which is also sponsored by West Point Thoroughbreds, Spendthrift Farm, Legacy Bloodstock, Woodford Thoroughbreds and the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association's 2021 Yearling Sale, the writers talked about what the latest developments in the FBI indictments case mean, remembered the great Bernardini and looked forward to a monster weekend of racing.
