Imbriale to Keep Belmont Announcing Duties; Mirahmadi To Take Over at Saratoga, Griffin at Aqueduct

While retaining announcing duties at Belmont Park, John Imbriale will retire as the full-time announcer at the New York Racing Association at the end of 2022, the organization announced Sunday. Frank Mirahmadi will take over the race calling duties at Saratoga Race Course and Chris Griffin will become the primary track announcer at Aqueduct Racetrack beginning in 2023.

Imbriale's 43-year tenure with NYRA dates to 1979 when he won a New York Daily News contest, which gave him the opportunity to call a race and work with the NYRA press office. He has served as NYRA's full-time track announcer since January 2020.

“NYRA is the pinnacle of this wonderful sport, and these last three years have been filled with incredible moments and races that I will never forget,” said Imbriale. “I'd like to thank the fans at Saratoga for truly embracing me, and I look forward to being in the booth the rest of the year and at Belmont Park moving forward.”

Mirahmadi has been the track announcer at Santa Anita Park since 2018 and Monmouth Park since 2015.

“I felt the history and tradition of Saratoga Race Course the moment I entered the gates for the first time 25 years ago,” said Mirahmadi. “It is a magical place, and I am beyond grateful to follow in the footsteps of John Imbriale next summer at the Spa.”

Griffin has served as track announcer at Parx Racing since 2021. He previously worked as track announcer at Sam Houston Race Park, Gulfstream Park West and Portland Meadows. A native of Santa Monica, California, Griffin was backup announcer to Imbriale at the 2021/22 Aqueduct winter meet.

“Aqueduct Racetrack plays a central role in New York's Thoroughbred racing ecosystem, and it was a privilege to be able to call races there last winter,” said Griffin. “I thank NYRA for this opportunity and can't wait to get back to the Big A to begin this new role.”

Baffert Takes Stand in Day One of ’21 Derby DQ Appeal

Trainer Bob Baffert spent 2 1/2 hours on the witness stand testifying at a Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) appeal hearing Monday.

Baffert's intent by filing the appeal is to clear from his record a 90-day suspension he has already served while also reversing the KHRC's disqualification of Medina Spirit from the 2021 GI Kentucky Derby.

Those penalties were the result of the Baffert-trained colt returning a positive for betamethasone after crossing the finish wire first in America's most historic and important horse race.

Beyond the already-served suspension (which ran from early April through early July) and a pending KHRC fine for $7,500 (that is also being appealed), Medina's Spirit's betamethasone overage also triggered separate banishments and sanctions from racing at the Churchill Downs, Inc. (CDI) portfolio of racetracks, plus at the New York Racing Association tracks.

Baffert has either fought or is in the process of fighting both of those sanctions in court, but right now he is precluded from having a trainee in the 2023 Derby because of CDI's actions against him (as part of a two-year ban, CDI had also denied Derby participation to the Hall-of-Fame trainer in 2022).

Monday's hearing rekindled many of the same pro-and-con arguments that have been repeatedly articulated by both sides over the past 16 months in various courtroom and hearing settings.

This latest KHRC hearing process could last the entire week.

Horse Racing Nation (HRN) published live updates of the Aug. 22 proceedings in Frankfort, Kentucky.

HRN reported that Jennifer Wolsing, general counsel for the KHRC, framed the case in straightforward terms during her opening statement.

“This is a very simple case,” she stated. “Betamethasone is a class C medication which has been prohibited in Kentucky.”

Clark Brewster, who represents Baffert, countered with his own opening statement that focused on disputing the KHRC's claim that there was an applicable “limit of detection” rule while also disputing the KHRC's assertions that Baffert had a pattern of medication rulings against him.

HRN also reported that, “Brewster also sought to discredit Industrial Labs, which returned the positive test on Medina Spirit, suggesting that the company needed to come back with positive tests to stay in business.”

Brewster also claimed there was a difference between injecting betamethasone (which Baffert has denied) and using it topically as an ointment like Otomax (which is Baffert's explanation of how the drug got into Medina Spirit), according to HRN.

“I won't say it was a mistake [to give Medina Spirit an ointment the day before the Derby],” Baffert was quoted as saying in HRN. “If you use an ointment to humanely heal a rash, it's not a mistake.”

At one point during testimony, Wolsing questioned Baffert's knowledge about medication rules in Kentucky, and asked Baffert to read aloud the ingredient list for Otomax, which includes betamethasone valerate.

NYRA To Host Military Appreciation Day at Saratoga

Veterans and active-duty military personnel will be honored during the New York Racing Association (NYRA)'s annual Military Appreciation Day at Saratoga Thursday, Aug. 25.

“The New York Racing Association is honored to recognize the dedication and sacrifices made by the brave men and women who serve our country,” said NYRA President and CEO Dave O'Rourke. “We look forward to welcoming them to this special day at Saratoga Race Course and we thank them for their service.”

All vets and current active-duty members of the military will receive free grandstand admission. Gates open at 11 a.m. with first post set for 1:05 p.m.

NYRA Acquires 49% Interest in United Tote

Churchill Downs Inc. has entered into an agreement to sell 49% of United Tote Company to NYRA Content Management Solutions, LLC, a subsidiary of the New York Racing Association. The transaction is subject to usual and customary closing conditions, including applicable regulatory notices and approvals, and is expected to close by the end of 2022. As part of the agreement, the United Tote pari-mutuel settlements business will be excluded and will remain with CDI.

CDI and NYRA intend to work together to create and provide a comprehensive and efficient industry-leading pari-mutuel solution through United Tote that will expedite the expansion of horse racing seamlessly onto sports wagering platforms to reach new customers. Pending the appropriate regulatory approvals, NYRA will transition its pari-mutuel wager processing to United Tote in 2023 under a separate agreement.
