Sequel New York Carries Banner For Home Team At Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Showcase

The cancellation of the Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearlings Sale due to COVID-19 made the state's commercial breeders more nomadic than usual for the 2020 yearling sale season, with Fasig-Tipton offering sections focused on New York-breds in several of its upcoming sales to make up for the lost venue.

The first stop on that tour was Wednesday's opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase Sale, which had yearlings bred in the Empire State lead off the proceedings. Looking down the list of offerings, though, the sire ranks represented in the New York portion were almost entirely Kentucky-based.

The biggest exception to that trend came from the stallion roster of Sequel New York, which accounted for every spot among the top five most expensive New York-sired offerings during the New York-bred portion of the Yearling Showcase.

Becky Thomas of Sequel New York described it as a tough marketplace for the handful of horses that were both bred and sired in New York, owing to a variety of factors that were largely out of anyone's control, but became a daunting condition under which to sell horses when stacked on top of each other.

Thomas said the change in venue, well away from New York, affected the types of buyers that were available for horses with full-blooded New York backgrounds, with most instead leaning on the names they recognized more readily. The positioning of the state-bred session on the front end of a marathon few weeks of yearling sales – especially surrounded by national-level offerings on the sales grounds – might have made it harder to stand out, versus how the same offerings might have fared selling in Saratoga Springs with their own kind.

“We're in COVID territory, and unfortunately there's a lot of uncertainty, so the New York-bred, New York-sired horses suffered dramatically,” Thomas said. “New York is under a strong quarantine situation, so we have a fraction of the trainers that are here from New York that would be going to Saratoga to buy these. It was pretty brutal for those sires…It's no one's fault, we were just a victim of circumstances.”

There was a two-way tie amongst the New York-sired offerings for the highest sale price, each bringing $75,000.

Consistent with his position as a perennial leader on the New York sire list, Freud was responsible for one-half of the top duo when Calumet Farm bought Hip 141, a colt named Elusive Freud, for $75,000.

The dark bay or brown colt is out of the winning Elusive Quality mare Follow My Luck, whose first foal to race is a winner by Cross Traffic. Follow My Luck was purchased by breeder Allen Hallett for $24,000 at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Fall Mixed Sale, with Grade 1-winning third dam Strategic Maneuver being the pivot point for runners including Grade/Group 3 winners Ishiguru, Jennifer Lynnette, and Shumoos.

Elusive Freud also has a healthy bit of local flavor on his page in Good Luck Gus, a four-time stakes winner against New York-bred stakes competition.

Vinery Sales consigned Elusive Freud as agent for Hallett.

Freud, a 22-year-old son of Storm Cat, stood the 2020 breeding season for an advertised fee of $6,500.

Completing the exacta was Hip 12, a colt from the second crop of Laoban who sold to Northshore Bloodstock, agent.

The second foal out of the winning Street Cry mare Lapinski is notable for his third dam, the 2006 Broodmare of the Year Cara Rafaela – the dam of champion Bernardini and Grade 1-placed Ile de France. The colt was bred by Milfer Farm Inc., and consigned by Bluewater Sales, agent.

Laoban, New York's leading freshman sire, also sent through Hip 98, a colt out of the unraced Bodemeister mare Anna's Angel, who sold to Steven Young, agent, for $35,000. The dam is a half-sister to Grade 1 winners Spun Sugar and Daaher. Bluewater Sales also handled this colt at the sale.

A 7-year-old son of Uncle Mo, Laoban stood the past season for $5,000.

The Yearling Showcase also marked a coming out party for Union Jackson, who sends his first yearlings through the ring this season.

Leading the way for the 8-year-old son of Curlin was Hip 25, a dark bay or brown filly out of the winning Wildcat Heir mare Mochima who sold to Autrey Bloodstock for $37,000. Bred by Larry Botting, the colt hails from the family of Grade 3 winners Feline Story and Notacatbutallama. Gainesway consigned him, as agent.

Union Jackson was also represented by Hip 152, a colt out of the unraced War Pass mare Hey Wheresmydinner who hammered to Meah/Lloyd Bloodstock, agent for David McCarty, for $30,000.

The colt was bred in partnership by Sequel Stallions NY and Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, the two entities that stand Union Jackson. Sequel New York also consigned the colt on Wednesday.

“People really liked them, and got to appreciate them,” Thomas said about the Union Jackson yearlings. “I think people will go away with a good feeling with what they look like.”

The next opportunity for buyers to shop for New York-breds en masse will come a bit closer to home at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale on Oct. 5-6 in Timonium, Md. About three-quarters of the auction's opening session will be dedicated to New York-breds.

Tiz The Law Beats The Rain, Has Final Kentucky Derby Breeze

For his final piece of serious preparation for the Grade 1, $3 million Kentucky Derby on Sept. 5, Sackatoga Stable's New York-bred Tiz the Law went five furlongs in 59.21 seconds over the Saratoga Race Course main track on Saturday in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Trainer Barclay Tagg scheduled the work to avoid the anticipated rain showers, so the four-time Grade 1 winner was among the first horses to step foot onto the track at 5:45 a.m., just fifteen minutes before precipitation made its way to the Capital Region.

Piloted by exercise rider Heather Smullen, the son of second-crop sire Constitution went his first three-eighths in 36.01 before galloping out in 1:12.01 on the fast main track, which was raked and harrowed.

“Everything went fine. He came back well,” Tagg said. “He did everything he was supposed to do. I'm satisfied with this work. We had to make the decision this morning to work him. We made the decision around 4:00. Luckily, it wasn't raining when he was working. It's supposed to rain all day, and the track may be worse tomorrow. I'm glad we got the work in.”

Tiz the Law, who is atop the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 372 qualifying points, will be the likely favorite of the “Run for the Roses,” arriving at the prestigious event off a runaway triumph in the Grade 1 Runhappy Travers on August 8. Unbeaten in four starts this season, he won the Grade 3 Holy Bull and Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park before becoming the first New York-bred in over a century to win the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes on June 20.

A win in the Kentucky Derby would be a second victory in the American Classic for both Tagg and Sackatoga Stable, who teamed up to win the 2003 Kentucky Derby with Funny Cide, who became the first and so far only New York-bred to win the prestigious event.

Tiz the Law is scheduled to ship to Churchill Downs on Monday. Manny Franco will have the call in the Kentucky Derby.

Bred in New York by Twin Creeks Farm, Tiz the Law is out of the graded stakes winning Tiznow mare Tizfiz and was hammed down to $110,000 when being purchased at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Yearling Sale of New York-breds.

Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale Catalog Now Online

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged 553 yearlings for its 2020 Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale, to be held on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5-6. The auction, which will be held immediately following the rescheduled Preakness Stakes, will be conducted at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md.

Hips 1-200 will be offered in the Monday session, which will begin at 1 p.m. The sale will begin with a large group of New York-breds, which are cataloged together as hips 1-154 this year.

Hips 201-553 will be offered in the Tuesday session, which will begin at 10 a.m.

“This is a strong catalog, with our entries up 27 percent over last year,” commented Midlantic director of sales Paget Bennett. “Consignors have a lot of confidence in the Midlantic marketplace and have supported the sale with increased sire power and quality. We are also pleased to welcome major Kentucky and New York-based consignors to Midlantic this year.”

Bennett continued: “Conducting the sale on the Monday and Tuesday after the Preakness adds another exciting element to this year's auction, as it provides those participating in Preakness weekend racing a nearby venue to shop for quality yearlings. With 10 different state-bred programs represented in the catalog, the sale provides great opportunities for both national and regional racing stables.”

The Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale ranks among the top of all major North American yearling sales in numerous performance categories, according to statistics recently released by The BloodHorse MarketWatch. These include percentage of Grade 1 winners, graded stakes winners, and 2-year-old winners produced from horses sold.

The catalog may now be viewed online, and will also be available via the equineline sales catalogue app. Print catalogues will be available beginning Sept. 8.

Phone bidding and online bidding services will also be available.

New York-Bred Veteran Mr. Buff Stretching Out For Suburban Try

Chester and Mary Broman's multiple stakes-winning millionaire Mr. Buff will try 1 1/4-miles for the first time in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Suburban at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Trained by John Kimmel, the 6-year-old New York-bred son of Friend Or Foe has posted wins from seven furlongs up to a mile an eighth in a 37-race career that boasts eight stakes wins from an overall record of 14-7-4 and purse earnings of $1,076,536.

The sizable chestnut was in a good run of form over the winter at Aqueduct with scores in the Alex M. Robb, Jazil and Haynesfield before his training was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned off a four-month layoff last out to finish second to Funny Guy in the one-turn mile Commentator on June 12 at Belmont.

“He was rolling until they shut things down here. He missed a month of training,” said Kimmel. “He walked for a month at the farm and he didn't have the bottom into him that Funny Guy did, not to mention he carried 127 pounds. I thought he was going to get swallowed up, but he actually hung in there really well.”

Mr. Buff matched a career-best 106 Beyer Speed Figure with his 20-length score in the Haynesfield on February 22 when left alone on the front end under regular pilot Junior Alvarado.

That effort came on the heels of a similarly powerful score in the open Jazil at nine furlongs. Kimmel has tried Mr. Buff in graded company twice when off-the-board in the Grade 2 New Orleans on a track he didn't handle and was seventh last summer in the Grade 1 Woodward at Saratoga.

On Saturday, the 17.2 hands tall Mr. Buff will have a significant weight break carrying just 118 pounds against a field headlined by 2019 Grade 1 Belmont Stakes champ Sir Winston [124 pounds] and multiple graded-stakes winner Tacitus [122 pounds].

Kimmel said the added distance may help Mr. Buff ease into his significant stride.

“I contemplated running him a little further if I had the chance and this looked like the right opportunity,” said Kimmel. “A mile and a quarter will have a much more reasonable pace scenario and maybe he won't have any issued with his lead transitions like he does sometimes at a flat mile and the pace is a little faster.

“When he gets going 45 to the half and three quarters in 10 and change, sometimes he doesn't make that switch to his outside lead,” added Kimmel. “But he's been pretty good at it when he goes around two turns, so we'll see how he does at one and a half turns.”

Mr. Buff will exit post 4 under Alvarado in the Suburban which will close out Saturday's 11-race card.
