D. J. Stable to Match ‘Giving Tuesday’ Donations to New Vocations

D. J. Stable, LLC will match 'Giving Tuesday' donations to New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program in celebration of the organization's 30th anniversary. D. J. Stable, whose Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief) won the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Nov. 4, will match up to $30,000 in support of racehorse aftercare. Giving Tuesday takes place Nov. 29 this year.

“We are so pleased to have the opportunity to partner with this wonderful organization,” said D. J. Stable's general manager Jonathan Green. “Our horses have benefited from being placed in New Vocations' aftercare programs, which prompted us to offer a matching fund for the first $30,000 contributed during the Giving Tuesday drive. We hope others follow our lead and donate to New Vocations.”

New Vocations was started in 1992 as a nonprofit organization which relies almost entirely on donations to carry out its mission to rehab, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses. Over the last 30 years, the program has served more than 8,000 horses. New Vocations also annually raises funds during a Breeders' Cup Pledge, which this year raised more than $140,000. Wonder Wheel was one of the winning horses with a part of her earnings earmarked for New Vocations.

“We are so thankful for the generous support from D. J. Stable and the Green family,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations Thoroughbred Program Director. “Their match last year helped us raise over $50,000 on Giving Tuesday and this year's match has the potential to raise more than $60,000. We have seen an increase in costs to all our program expenses, so the funding from Giving Tuesday is greatly needed to help us continue to carry out our aftercare efforts.”

New Vocations Adds Florida Facility

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program has opened a satellite facility at Trillium Sport Horses near Ocala, Florida. Erin MacDonald, an international three-day eventing rider, will oversee the facility's focus on rehabbing, retraining, and rehoming retiring Thoroughbred racehorses.

“On average, 60 horses each year are shipped more than 700 miles from Florida to our Lexington facility,” said Anna Ford, the program director for New Vocations. “Horses coming from Florida racetracks and training centers will now have a much shorter travel distance and duration as they start their next chapters.”

New Vocations, the nation's oldest and largest racehorse adoption charity, now has nine facilities in six states. Ford said a Florida location near Ocala had been in the plan for some time, but was delayed by the pandemic.

According to New Vocations, MacDonald has years of experience restarting off-track Thoroughbreds. She said, “It is so gratifying to help a Thoroughbred smoothly transition into a second career after the races. I am honored to be working with such an outstanding aftercare organization and to join in their efforts to provide Florida-based horses and their connections with a quality rehabilitation and retraining program.”

The first horses arrived at the Florida facility in late 2021. Three have already been adopted with several more making progress in various stages of rehab and training. Breeders’ Cup Pledge Raises Over $140,000 For New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program announced today that early estimate of funds raised during its Breeders' Cup Pledge will be more than $140,000. This year's total was driven by a record eight horses with pledging connections—Knicks Go, Aloha West, Life Is Good, Golden Pal, Ce Ce, Corniche, Pizza Bianca and Twilight Gleaming (IRE)—winning their races on Future Stars Friday and Championship Saturday.

Additional pledges are still coming in and final donations are still being tallied. Now in its 12th year, the Pledge has raised more than $940,000, with 100 percent of funds going directly to support the program's rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming efforts.

“Eclipse and our partners consider Thoroughbred aftercare of paramount importance and it is our duty and pleasure to support New Vocations,” said Aron Wellman of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. “It is with great pride that we're able to send a portion of Aloha West's purse winnings from his Breeders' Cup Sprint victory to support an organization that's always ready to help a rehoming or retraining prospect.

“The partnership that owns Aloha West is comprised of a healthy blend of veteran owners who understand the importance of aftercare and newcomers, as well,” he added. “To see these newcomers learning about aftercare and supporting the cause is gratifying and good for the sport.”

New Vocations All-Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show Raises $150,000

After an uncertain, challenging and virtual 2020, the New Vocations All-Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show, Presented by Iris Smith Stables, LLC, returned to an in-person competition and raised a record-breaking $150,000 in sponsorships. All proceeds from the event will go directly to support New Vocations' efforts to rehab, retrain and rehome retiring racehorses.

The 18th annual show—held for the first time at Highfields Event Center, in Aiken, SC, Sept. 3-5—was an exciting and successful return to live events for New Vocations after a quiet past 18 months due to COVID-19. The competition brought together nearly 100 Thoroughbreds from 10 different states to compete in a variety of disciplines including dressage, hunter, jumper, Western and pleasure classes.

“We were thrilled that we were able to far surpass our goal of raising $100,000 through the support of our generous long-term and new sponsors,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations Thoroughbred Program Director. “The new venue meant that we were able to put on a more intimate event, which allowed exhibitors extra opportunities to connect and share their love for Thoroughbreds. It was so rewarding to look across four competition arenas full of horses knowing that while they have rich racing bloodlines and histories, they now have new skills, new careers, and new purposes.”

Show highlights included:

Winner of the War Horse W/T/C was Bail Bondsman, shown by Karen Morgan. Bail Bondsman, a 2009 Kentucky-bred gelding by Bellamy Road, raced 44 times and earned $106,499
Winner of the Open Hunter Derby was Blame it on Texas, shown by Elisabeth Demars. Blame it on Texas, a 2012 Kentucky-bred gelding by Blame, raced 12 times and earned $12,788
Winner of the Open Jumper Stake was Ballerino, shown by Susan Sisco. Ballerino, a 2008 Florida-bred gelding by Lido Place (CHI), raced 15 times and earned $38,709
Winner of the Dressage High Score was Big Iron, shown by junior rider Mayela Salazar. Big Iron, a 2015 son of Caleb's Posse, raced 29 times and earned $65,281

The groups that traveled the farthest to compete: horses and riders from Sugar Creek Equinapy, in Harrisonville, MO, and North Country Horses, in Gansevoort, NY, hauled 974 miles and 956 miles, respectively.

“We were so glad to, once again, be able to celebrate the Thoroughbred with a weekend full of competition, fun and horses,” Ford said. “We're excited to get started on plans for what we hope can be an even better 2022 event.”
