Nine From Asmussen Stable Work; Nashville Status Undetermined

Trainer Steve Asmussen was pleased with the Sunday works by his nine pre-entrants to the Breeders' Cup World Championships Sunday on Friday and Saturday at Keeneland race course in Lexington, Ky.

Among them was J. Kirk and Judy Robison's undefeated two-time Grade 1 winner Jackie's Warrior, expected to be the favorite in Friday's $2 million TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. Jackie's Warrior worked a half-mile over a track labeled fast in :48.80. It was his second work at Keeneland, where he covered five furlongs in 1:00.20 Oct. 25.

“He had a nice, easy half-mile,” Asmussen said. “Thought he moved well over the race track. The circumstances were excellent today. We're very excited about running him on Friday.”

After opening his career June 19 at Churchill Downs, Jackie's Warrior recorded a three-length win in the Aug. 7 Saratoga Special (G2) at six furlongs, a 21/4-length win in the Sept. 7 Hopeful (G1) at seven furlongs and a 51/2-length win in the Oct. 10 Champagne (G1) at 1 mile. The Juvenile is at 1 1/16 miles.

Asmussen is confident in the colt's ability at the Juvenile distance.

“I think what gave us the most confidence was his Champagne, two brilliant races at Saratoga and for him to carry that (talent) over to another surface – and he looked brilliant doing it,” he said. “This will be his first two-turn race. He is very speed-influenced in his pedigree but physically and mentally he is doing exceptional.”

Asmussen's other Juvenile contender, Winchell Thoroughbreds' Calibrate, also worked four furlongs in :48.80.

Asmussen's three pre-entrants to the $2-million Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) – Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt's Yaupon, L and N Racing's Echo Town and CHC Inc. and WinStar Farm's Nashville – each turned in three-furlong works. Yaupon in :36.80, Echo Town in :37.40 and Nashville in :36.40.

The work was the fourth at Keeneland for Yaupon, who is undefeated in his four career starts this year.

“Got a very laid-back attitude with a tremendous amount of talent. (Assistant) Scott (Blasi) and I were talking about what were the odds of the Heiligbrodts replacing (last year's Sprint winner and champion) Mitole with Yaupon because they have a similar demeanor and both of them have tremendous ability.”

Nashville wore his Sprint towel Sunday. The colt also is pre-entered in the $2 million Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) and is nominated to Saturday's Perryville on the Breeders' Cup undercard.

Elliott Walden, President/CEO and Racing Manager for WinStar, said no decision had been made regarding Nashville's next race.

“Everything's on the table.” Walden said. “He's an extreme talent. He's only 3. He's only run twice. It seems like a big ask to run against the accomplished sprinters that he would have to run against. Not that he wouldn't be capable.

“I think he'll go a mile. I think he'll use his speed to stretch out as well naturally. We'll see how it goes. Great problem to have. Blessed to have him. He's got a cool name: Nashville.”

Other Asmussen workers were Heider Family Stables' Thoughtfully (Juvenile Fillies), four furlongs in :49.40, and West Point Thoroughbreds, William Sandbrook and Anna Marie Shannon's County Final (Juvenile Turf Sprint) and Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, Madaket Stables and Spendthrift Farm's Cowan (Juvenile Turf Sprint), three furlongs in :39.20 and 38.80, respectively.

Crawford Farms Racing's Archidust (Turf Sprint) worked three furlongs on the good turf course in :38.

GISP Crazy Beautiful, Dams of Mutasaabeq & Nashville Among Keeneland November Supplements

Runhappy Debutante S. winner, GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies hopeful, and ‘TDN Rising Star‘ Crazy Beautiful (Liam’s Map) has been supplemented to the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, which will be held Nov. 9-18. Crazy Beautiful was last seen finishing second in the Oct. 2 GI Darley Alcibiades S. behind unbeaten Simply Ravishing (Laoban). She was also second in the GIII Pocahontas S. Sept. 3. Denali Stud will consign the filly, who will appear in Book 1 of the sale.

Also supplemented is Downside Scenario (Scat Daddy), the dam of ‘TDN Rising Star‘ Mutasaabeq (Into Mischief), who won the GII Bourbon S. at Keeneland Oct. 4, and her weanling colt by Uncle Mo. Mutasaabeq was third in the Sept. 7 GI Runhappy Hopeful S. behind unbeaten Jackie’s Warrior (Maclean’s Music) and is pointing to the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Downside Scenario is in foal to Audible and will be consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency.

Another supplement, this one by Paramount Sales, is Veronique (Mizzen Mast), who is in foal to Collected and is the dam of undefeated Keeneland winner and ‘TDN Rising Star‘ Nashville (Speightstown). Nashville himself is cataloged as a racing or stallion prospect.

Other Book 1 supplements include a weanling filly by Kitten’s Joy out of Morakami (Fusaichi Pegasus), who is a half-sister to GII Sorrento S. winner My Girl Red (Texas Red) and additional 2020 stakes winner Gold Street (Street Boss). The Morakami filly is consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency. In addition, City Success (City Zip), a full-sister to GSW C Z Rocket, has also been supplemented. She is in foal to Distorted Humor and is consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency.

It was previously announced that the dam and weanling half-brother of MGISW Jackie’s Warrior (Maclean’s Music) have also been supplemented to the sale. A total of 14 horses are supplements to the November sale to date, and Keeneland will continue to accept supplements until the sale begins.

PLETCHER UNVEILS MILLION-DOLLAR BABY

Repole Stable, St. Elias Stable and the Coolmore contingent teamed up at Keeneland September to acquire a $1-million son of Got Lucky (A.P. Indy) named OVERTOOK (Curlin) and he debuts here for that Grade I-winning mare’s conditioner Todd Pletcher. The colt hails from the family of Grade I winners Imagining (Giant’s Causeway), Super Saver (Maria’s Mon), Callback (Street Sense), Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat) and Girolamo (A.P. Indy); as well as MGSW & GISP Daydreaming (A.P. Indy).

“He’s a well-made horse. He’s a good moving well-balanced kind of horse so he wasn’t hard to pick out,” Pletcher said. “He’s a colt that we’ve seen improve steadily all summer. Obviously, he’s bred to be a two-turn horse. Hopefully he finishes up well and builds off of this.”

Also making his first start here is Chiefswood Stables homebred Weyburn (Pioneerof the Nile). Speightstown Colt Romps in the Saratoga Slop to Earn ‘TDN Rising Star’ Badge

Nashville (c, 3, Speightstown–Veronique, by Mizzen Mast) set sharp early fractions in the Saratoga slop on debut Wednesday afternoon and ran away and hid from his three overmatched rivals in the stretch en route to a ‘TDN Rising Star’ performance.

The $460,000 Keeneland September yearling graduate, campaigned in partnership by CHC INC. and WinStar Farm LLC, sported a pair of flashy bullets on his worktab for Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, including a five-furlong spin in :58 4/5 (1/20) from the gate at the Spa Aug. 9.

The 1-5 favorite broke sharply, and sped through sparkling opening splits of :21.50 and :43.87. He hit the quarter pole in complete command beneath Irad Ortiz, Jr. and splashed his way home to an eye-catching and geared-down 11 1/2-length daylight victory. Democratic Values (Honor Code) was second.

Nashville becomes the fifth ‘Rising Star’ in 2020 for leading sire Speightstown. Asmussen also campaigns fellow ‘Rising Star’ Echo Town (Speightstown), winner of this summer’s GI H. Allen Jerkens S. presented by Runhappy.

Nashville’s unraced dam Veronique was purchased privately by Tony Holmes in foal to Mastery after the 2019 KEENOV Sale. She is also represented by the unraced 2-year-old colt Market Cap (Candy Ride {Arg}) and a Mastery colt of 2019 and filly of 2020. The 9-year-old was bred to Collected for 2021.

Nashville’s third dam Set Them Free (Stop the Music) produced 2005 GI Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo (Holy Bull) and MGISW Tiago (Pleasant Tap).
