Grade 1 Winner Street Band Retired, To Be Offered In Fasig-Tipton November Sale

The connections of Grade 1 winner Street Band have announced her retirement from racing. She will be cataloged at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

Racing in partnership for Ray Francis, Cindy Jones, J. Larry Jones, Medallion Racing, and MyRacehorse.com, Street Band won five times in her career and she retires with earnings of more than $1.1 million.

“Street Band was a special filly for our barn. She had so much class to go with her Grade 1 talent. It's bittersweet to see her go, but we are proud that she proved herself to be among the best of her generation,” said trainer Larry Jones, who also bred the filly with Cindy Jones and Ray Francis.

A 7 1/4-length maiden winner at age two, Street Band would go on to win three graded stakes races by an average margin of three lengths in her career. Her most impressive win came in the $1-million Grade 1 Cotillion at Parx. In a field that featured four different multiple Grade 1 winners and an Eclipse Award champion, Street Band defeated the best fillies of her generation to win going away by 2 1/4 lengths. In winning the Grade 1 Cotillion, she handed multiple Grade 1 winner Guarana the only defeat in her career to this point.

Street Band won or placed nine times in her career, adding victories earlier in the year in the G2 Fair Grounds Oaks and G3 Indiana Oaks to her Cotillion score, along with a third in the Grade 1 Alabama at Saratoga.

Street Band hails from a family with success across the globe. She is the sixth winner from seven to race produced by Street Minstrel, a daughter of top-class broodmare sire Street Cry and a half-sister to two other stakes horses. Street Band's second dam is Minstrel's Lassie, herself a Grade 1 and French stakes winner, and a half-sister to Mintly, the granddam of two-time Australian Group 1 winner Manighar.

Taylor Made Sales Agency will consign Street Band to the Fasig-Tipton November Sale, which will be held immediately following the Breeders' Cup on Sunday, Nov. 8 at historic Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky.

Second Chances: Moonlight d’Oro

In this continuing series, TDN’s Senior Editor Steve Sherack catches up with the connections of promising maidens to keep on your radar.

Moonlight d’Oro (f, 2, Medaglia d’Oro-Venetian Sonata, by Bernardini) stamped herself as a 2-year-old to watch after rolling home through traffic to finish a strong second as the 3-5 favorite in her five-furlong unveiling at Del Mar Aug. 2 (video).

Trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella, the $620,000 Keeneland September yearling was outsprinted early and ridden in eighth heading into the far turn. On the move with a wall of horses in front of her as they straightened, the MyRacehorse.com and Spendthrift Farm colorbearer showed plenty of maturity gamely splitting horses in the stretch and rallied smartly late, coming home a field-best final eighth in :12.75, finishing 1 1/4 lengths adrift Roll Up Mo Money (Uncle Mo). Moonlight d’Oro earned a 49 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.

“We knew going into the race that breaking out of the gate wasn’t necessarily her strong suit and all day long I was kind of pacing around the house going, ‘Man, I wish this race was 5 1/2 or six furlongs,'” MyRacehorse’s Racing Operations and Owner Experience Manager Joe Mishak said.

“Once she didn’t catch a flyer, it really stacked against her going five furlongs. She settled and took plenty of dirt in her face though. It took her a quarter of a mile or three furlongs to figure out what was going on, but the way she did respond and work her way in between horses was very impressive. It’s so intimidating for even older horses to do that, let alone a 2-year-old that doesn’t have the greatest size, either. That was really encouraging, especially knowing she wants to go a longer route of ground.”

Bred in Kentucky by Stonehaven Steadings, Moonlight d’Oro is a half-sister to impressive debut winner Olive Branch (Speightstown), who finished third in her final career start in Saratoga’s GII Adirondack S. as a juvenile for the late Rick Violette. Moonlight d’Oro was produced by a winning full-sister to GSW Wilburn and SW & GSP La Appassionata; and a half-sister to GSW Beethoven (Sky Mesa).

As for what’s next Moonlight d’Oro, Mishak said, “At this stage of the game, it will probably be the end of the Del Mar meet. I’m sure there will be options there, whether it’s another maiden going six or 6 1/2 furlongs or even a race like the [GI Del Mar] Debutante [Sept. 6]. It’s a discussion of how she works the next few times and getting together with Richard to see where he thinks she might be best suited.”

Bloodlines: Authentic’s Haskell Win Brings Latest Success For Into Mischief, MyRacehorse

Into Mischief picked up his sixth Grade 1 winner on July 18 with Authentic's victory in the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park. Two days earlier, the bay son of the deceased sire Harlan's Holiday (by the Storm Cat stallion Harlan) had the one-two in the G3 Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga when Dayoutoftheoffice won by six lengths from Make Mischief, who was a length ahead of second-choice Hopeful Princess (Not This Time). The fourth horse was 10 lengths farther back, and the odds-on favorite, Beautiful Memories (Hard Spun), stumbled at the start, was pulled up after a half-mile, then walked off.

In contrast to the victory of heavily favored Authentic, Dayoutoftheoffice and Make Mischief were two of the four longest shots in the field of seven, and the winner was 19.8-to-1.

Quick, precocious, and willing racers, Dayoutoftheoffice and Make Mischief are typical of the progeny of leading sire Into Mischief, who has stood his entire stud career at Spendthrift Farm for owner B. Wayne Hughes, and the stallion has risen from the modest heights of an entering stud fee of $12,500 to a position in the hierarchy of stallions where his fee for 2020 was $175,000 live foal, and for 2021, it would not be surprising to see a further increase.

The quantity and quality of his offspring are responsible for that steady upward progression in stud fee.

As evidence of that, Into Mischief was the leading sire of 2019 by progeny earnings, with $18.9 million, and he ranks second in 2020. In addition, Into Mischief is a promising sire of stallions, with such well-regarded young horses as Audible (G1 Florida Derby), who entered stud at WinStar in 2020, and Practical Joke (G1 Champagne, Hopeful, Allen Jerkens), who entered stud at Ashford in 2018 and has first-crop yearlings this year.

When he goes to stud, Authentic will go to Spendthrift to stand alongside Into Mischief, like the stallion's other sons Goldencents (sire of seven stakes winners and the earners of more than $10 million) and Maximus Mischief, who entered stud in 2020.

Spendthrift's Mark Toothaker said, “We're so lucky to have Into Mischief, because he's a generational sort of sire, and we'd love to stand all his sons, too. We already have a couple, and we're thrilled to have Authentic coming to Spendthrift. He's a taller, stretchier sort of Into Mischief, and we're seeing more of that type as breeders are coming to breed more mares to him with size and scope.”

Before Authentic goes on to a second career, however, trainer Bob Baffert will point the long-legged bay for the Kentucky Derby, and “hopefully Authentic runs on next year at four; that's the deal with him now,” Toothaker said, “and that was part of the plan for bringing in MyRacehorse.com as part of the ownership of the horse.”

Purchased at the 2018 Keeneland September sale by SF Bloodstock and Starlight West, Authentic started his career so impressively that Madaket Stables LLC, Spendthrift Farms LLC, and MyRaceHorse Stable subsequently have bought into the horse.

The first four entities are well-known for involvement in high-profile racing stock, but MyRaceHorse Stable is a different proposition. Toothaker noted that when “we met Michael Behrens, who owned MyRacehorse.com at the time, we loved it so much that Spendthrift bought a significant interest in the company,” and now Spendthrift is putting MyRaceHorse Stable in partnerships with some of its high-class racers.

Brian Lyle, who is the liaison for Spendthrift with MyRaceHorse Stable, said that “Mr. Hughes is concerned with the number of people involved in racing and wants to help attract more people to the sport. Our concept of MyRaceHorse Stable is purely to get more fans to the racetrack. It brings in more owners, it builds greater enthusiasm, and it builds up education so that some owners can move to the next level with their involvement in the sport.”

In Toothaker's analogy of the approach, he said, “It's a sort of farm league or development league to allow people to have individual involvement in the game through the purchase of micro-shares, and Mr. Hughes believes it could save the game. Normally, we are looking at young horses where Spendthrift would buy breeding rights, but now with MyRacehorse, we are also looking to buy racing rights.”

As testament to the widespread appeal that this could have with the general public, Toothaker recounted that the assistant pastor at the church where Toothaker and his family attend came up to him on Sunday to let him know that the clergyman had bought a share in Authentic.

Maybe those prayers made a difference in the stretch run of the Haskell. Either way, involvement of people not otherwise experienced in Thoroughbred ownership is a boon for the sport, and Authentic may prove an important educational and promotional marker for the popularity of the sport with this success and with anything else he accomplishes in the future.

Saturday’s Insights: $500K Into Mischief Juvenile Kicks Off Career in Spa Opener

1st-SAR, $72K, Msw, 2yo, 5 1/2f, 1:10 p.m. ET

MO MISCHIEF (Into Mischief), purchased by Myracehorse.com and Spendthrift Farm for $500,000 after breezing a quarter in :21 at OBS March, makes his debut for Todd Pletcher. The 9-5 morning-line favorite is out of the multiple stakes-placed Montbrook mare Montessa G.

“He’s a horse that we really liked when we bought him,” said Spendthrift Farms’ General Manager Ned Toffey. “Saratoga is the best of the bests, it’s where people love to unveil their 2-year-olds and you better have your big boy pants on when you go to the starting gate at Saratoga.”

Fellow firster Momos (Distorted Humor), a $180,000 OBS March graduate (:21), was produced by a half-sister to GISWs Daddys Lil Darling (Scat Daddy) and Mongolian Saturday (Any Given Saturday). He is trained by Christophe Clement.

Repo Rocks (Tapiture), just a $70,000 KEESEP yearling, displays a flashy worktab for Hall of Famer Bill Mott for this debut run.
