HIWU Launches Mobile App

Edited Press Release

A mobile HIWU (Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit) app to assist stakeholders in the Thoroughbred industry with the components of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's (HISA) Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) Program has been launched, the organization has revealed.

The free app is highlighted by a Prohibited Substances database, through which users can look up any of the substances that comprise HISA's Prohibited List of more than 1,300 banned substances and controlled medications. Each substance listing is populated with information about the substance such as HISA classification, licensed and colloquial names, detection times and screening limits (as applicable), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) label's indication for use.

In addition to the substance lookup tool, the app includes access to all educational materials on the HIWU website and the ability to submit tips through HIWU's anonymous whistleblower platforms. Pending and resolved matters concerning potential violations of the ADMC Program are also available for viewing at any time.

The app is configured to send push notifications to mobile devices to alert users about important updates.

“HIWU is pleased to offer a convenient app to the Thoroughbred industry to enable participants to access important resources about the ADMC Program wherever they are,” said Ben Mosier, executive director of HIWU. “We are especially excited about the substance lookup feature, which will bring this important information to the fingertips of horsemen, veterinarians and others who need to be able to easily consult the prohibited list.

“The app is inclusive of HIWU's broader education efforts to assist industry participants to operate in compliance of the ADMC Program.”

The app is now available for download on the Apple and Android app stores.

OTTB United App Will Bring Together Retired Racehorse Buyers, Sellers

The Retired Racehorse Project and OTTB United jointly announce today the release of OTTB United, a mobile app that unites sellers, buyers, and shippers of Thoroughbred ex-racehorses and gives back to the Thoroughbred placement community. The app is designed to make the entire process, from listing a horse, to communicating between buyer and seller, to organizing shipping to a horse's new home, as easy as a few taps of a button.

The app is also designed to give back to the Thoroughbred placement community: a portion of the premium subscription fee is donated to the Retired Racehorse Project, which takes a market-based approach to Thoroughbred aftercare to drive demand for ex-racehorses; subscribers can select from a list of aftercare organizations and for-profit resellers to receive an additional contribution.

“We are so fortunate to partner with the Retired Racehorse Project,” says OTTB United founder Amy Rubin. “The organization's mission is at the center of everything we want to achieve, and helping off-the-track Thoroughbreds is our number-one goal. The Retired Racehorse Project has strengthened the Thoroughbred community, and it's our hope that the OTTB United app produced in partnership will unite that community on one platform.”

OTTB United was designed to meet the specific needs of the Thoroughbred industry and creates a network to help more ex-racehorses find good homes. Uniting sellers, buyers, and shippers on a mobile platform greatly simplifies the entire process from start to finish, and helps both buyers and sellers navigate changing rules on social media that prohibit animal sales.

“The RRP works to increase the market for Thoroughbreds after racing in the equestrian world and we are always seeking out new ways to make that process easier and more successful,” says RRP executive director Jen Roytz. “We understand and respect the reasons for social media sites to place animal sales posts under increased scrutiny and it has surely gone a long way to prevent unwanted animals to end up in the wrong hands. It has also, however, compromised the efforts of many upstanding and responsible Thoroughbred placement organizations who depend on the platforms to market their available horses to reputable homes. Through our partnership with OTTB United, we are able to offer a potential solution.”

OTTB United is free to download from Google Play and the App Store. A premium subscription is $4.99 monthly. The app is available in the US and Canada.

Breeders’ Cup Updates App with Virtual Fashions and More

The official Breeders’ Cup mobile app has been updated to add augmented reality filters, allowing fans to try on virtual fashions, including virtual hats, or ride a virtual Thoroughbred. Fans can also pose for photos or videos inside a flower garland frame as confetti rains down. Available on iOS and Android devices, the newest version of the app was designed so that fans following along from home can have some extra fun. Spectators are not allowed at the Breeders’ Cup this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Originally launched in 2017 in partnership with YinzCam, a mobile app and software developer, the Breeders’ Cup mobile app provides racing fans with in-depth coverage, including breaking news, real-time results, and live streaming of all the Breeders’ Cup races.

“Over the past few years working with YinzCam, we’ve continuously evolved our app experience to deliver the best of the Breeders’ Cup right to our fans’ mobile devices,” said Justin McDonald, Senior Vice President, Marketing at Breeders’ Cup. “This year, with more fans interacting with our event from home, it has been more important than ever to introduce engaging features and capabilities that still allow them to enjoy the quintessential experiences inherent of the Thoroughbred lifestyle.”

The 2020 Breeders’ Cup World Championships will be held at Keeneland this weekend, Nov. 6-7.
