Barzalona: Runaway Group 1 Winner Sealiway Has Strong Chance In Juvenile Turf

Ridden out by race-day jockey Mickael Barzalona on Wednesday morning at Keeneland, Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hopeful Sealiway continued to draw eyes as he galloped over the main track. The 2-year-old son of young stallion Galiway (a half-brother to multiple G1-placed Silent Name) is listed at 8-1 on the morning line for Friday's Grade 1 contest, but his jockey thinks the colt poses a significant threat.

Barzalona explained that Sealiway won his last start, the Oct. 4 Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere over seven furlongs, by a very impressive eight lengths over Royal Ascot winner Nando Parrando (G2 Coventry Stakes). Trained in France by Breeders' Cup newcomer Frédéric Rossi for the Haras de la Gousserie of the Chehboub family and the breeder Guy Pariente, the victory was Sealiway's fourth in six outings.

Sold on the Deauville ring, he had easily won his first two races at Saint-Cloud and Chantilly, before finishing third in the listed Prix Roland de Chambure. He won again at Vichy in the listed Prix des Jouvenceaux and Jouvencelles, over seven furlongs, and was then second at ParisLongchamp in the Group 3 Prix La Rochette, without perhaps getting a clean run in the late stages of the race.

“He's been a precocious colt from the very beginning,” Barzalona said. “I think he stands a very good chance.”

Sealiway was a bit fresh during a lap of the main track at a slow gallop, but settled in while walking a half-mile followed by a stronger gallop over another lap of the main track.

Rossi trains the colt over a sand-based course at home in France, so he'll continue to train on the main track ahead of Friday's race, since the composition is closer to what he's used to. Barzalona will not be aboard Sealiway for any more morning gallops as his regular exercise rider will take over.

One concern might be the stretch out from seven furlongs to a mile in the Juvenile Turf, but Barzalona added that Sealiway doesn't act as though the distance should be a problem. Drawn in the one-hole for the 14-horse field, Sealiway should be able to use his naturally forward running style to his advantage.

“I think I have a better shot with him than I had with Talismanic,” the jockey said, referring to his winning mount in the 2017 Breeders Cup Turf (at odds of 14-1).

Rossi was especially pleased with Sealiway after his massive triumph in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, according to racingpost.com.

“I've always thought he was a really good horse and he ran over too short a trip to begin with,” the trainer said. “We decided to ride him more positively. He loves to dominate and you have to ride him more in the English style than the French. He doesn't sprint, he's a real steamroller.

“Before today he has never quite run the way he trained and I told the jockey I was pretty confident that if he could just do what he does in the mornings, the race would be over as a contest.”

Galiway’s Sealiway Out On His Own In the Lagardere

Loving the deep ground at ParisLongchamp, Haras de la Gousserie and Guy Pariente’s Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) proved a class apart from his rivals in a depleted renewal of the G1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on Sunday. Always travelling easily under Mickael Barzalona tracking the even tempo, the 3-1 shot who was second last time in the G3 Prix la Rochette over this course and seven-furlong trip Sept. 6 was in control without being asked a question two out. Opening up on command, the chestnut drew away with relish to score by eight lengths from the 3-5 favourite Nando Parrado (GB) (Kodiac {GB}), with Laws of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}) 3/4 of a length away in third. “I knew he could win like that–I think last time he was more surprised by the winner than beaten fair and square. It’s taken time to understand the horse, but finally we know that he’s a galloper and not a horse with a turn of foot. Today I told Mickael that I wanted a true-run race and not to be afraid to kick on early if need be. He’s a true little champion and if the owners are happy to travel with this horse he could go to the Breeders’ Cup. We will discuss that first before thinking about next year and I’m convinced he’ll be better then.”

One of the earlier domestic juveniles in action this term, Sealiway saw off the smart Xaario (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) by two lengths on debut over six furlongs on soft ground at Saint-Cloud May 12. Racing on going officially quicker than that on all his next four starts, he followed up under a penalty at Chantilly June 19 before finishing third behind King’s Harlequin (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Go Athletico (Fr) (Goken {Fr}) in the Listed Prix Roland de Chambure over this course and distance July 14. Taking Vichy by storm when scoring by five lengths in the Aug. 6 Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles at this distance, he again came off second-best to Go Athletico in the Rochette which serves as the stepping stone to this test for the home-trained juveniles.

Despite the absence of the customary Ballydoyle representation including the intended starter St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), the manner with which Sealiway ran away with this prize was impressive even allowing for the part obviously played by ground conditions. The G2 Coventry S. winner and G1 Prix Morny runner-up Nando Parrado and G2 Railway S. scorer Laws of Indices are significant benchmarks who have proven effective on a surface at least on the easy side of good, but were left behind as the winner cut loose in the straight. He rates as the most exciting colt handled so far by Frederic Rossi, who enjoyed Classic glory in June with the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Dream and Do (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}). With this performance, he has already usurped his smart 3-year-old stablemate Kenway (Fr) as the best progeny by the Haras de Colleville resident Galiway who is in his second season at stud.

Sealiway is a son of the Listed Prix Herod winner Kensea (Fr) (Kendaragent {Fr}), who hails from the family of the listed-placed Exit To Nowhere pair of Enjoleur (Fr) and Epicurien (Fr), the G2 Prix Malleret scorer Another Dancer (Groom Dancer) and the G3 Park Express S. winner Pollen (Ire) (Orpen). The MAB Agency stepped in for her yearling full-brother to the winner named Seagali (Fr), paying €115,000 for him at the recent Arqana Deauville September Yearling Sale.

The Arc Promise Raises Funds For Retired Racehorses In France

Au-Dela Des Pistes (ADDP), the French charity that focuses on retraining racehorses when they retire from the track, is launching a new initiative to raise funds: the Arc Promise. The Promise allows owners, trainers, breeders and jockeys with a horse running on the two biggest days of French racing to pledge a percentage of any prize money they win to the charity. Thus far, Mickael Barzalona has pledged a percentage of his winnings to ADDP.

Founded in 2016, the ADDP accredits farms that meet their requirements to either retrain or provide sanctuary to retired racehorses. In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic has forced owners and trainers at all levels to utilize ADDP's services to help place horses in suitable aftercare programs.

To raise additional money, France Galop has committed a portion of funds from ticket sales be designated for the charity.

Shamardal’s Earthlight Back on Point at ParisLongchamp

Godolphin’s Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal) suffered a first defeat in Deauville’s G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest last month and last term’s G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. hero bounced back in style, under a supremely confident Mickael Barzalona, to garner Sunday’s G3 Qatar Prix du Pin at ParisLongchamp. Settled off fast early fractions in seventh after breaking to the fore, the 9-10 pick made smooth headway on the bridle into contention passing the quarter-mile marker and unleashed a familiar burst once shaken up for the lead with 150 metres remaining to deny stablemate Tropbeau (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) by an ultimately comfortable 3/4-of-a-length.

“Earthlight is such a lovely horse with a great attitude and he showed us what we knew he was capable of today,” said Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard. “Mickael felt that he didn’t have the best trip and was wide the whole way, which makes it a pretty long way round when you are going to the second winning-post here. He said that Earthlight was brave and will come on for the race. He was having a good blow afterwards, he’s quite a heavy horse who needs plenty of work and plenty of racing, so that will do him good. Andre [Fabre] is confident that Earthlight could stay a mile, but options are running out at this time of year, so I would imagine that the G1 Prix de la Foret would be one of the main races that come into consideration.”

The trainer concurred, saying, “He didn’t run badly in his last race, but sprinting for the first time against older horses is a a different story and not easy. Of course, he will now come back [over seven furlongs here] in the [Oct. 4 G1] Prix de la Foret.”

Earthlight is the first foal bred from G1 Fillies’ Mile runner-up Winters Moon (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), whose own dam Summertime Legacy (GB) (Darshaan {GB}) took the G3 Prix des Reservoirs and ran third in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary. Summertime Legacy has four stakes performers to her credit, headed by G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud victor Mandaean (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) and G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Wavering (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}), herself the dam of the G3 Prix de Flore second Switching (Street Cry {Ire}) and G3 Prix Chloe placegetter Flowrider (Street Cry {Ire}). Summertime Legacy is the leading performer for Zawaahy (El Gran Senor), who in turn is kin to G1 Epsom Derby hero Golden Fleece (Nijinsky) and the stakes-producing Listed Modesty H. victrix Office Wife (Secretariat).
