INQUIRY Presented By Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders And Owners Association: Favorite Road Music?

Working in the Thoroughbred industry means spending a lot of time on the road.

The logistics between racetracks, training centers, auctions, farms, and breeding sheds can give a person a lot of time behind the wheel, which leads to a lot of time listening to the radio.

In this edition of INQUIRY, we ask folks on the sales grounds what they're listening to while traveling from place to place with the question, “What is your favorite music for the road?”

Seth Gregory – Seth Gregory Bloodstock

“Country. I like a little bit of everything from old school guys like Hank Williams Sr. to '90s country, and some of the new stuff.”

Ron Blake – Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services

“I listen to Bachata music. It's a Latin dance originated in the Dominican Republic. I Bachata myself, it's a dance. I go to the Dominican Republic three or four times a year, and it makes me feel like I'm down there.”

Mike Recio – South Point Sales Agency

“R&B and hip hop. I like Drake, Tupac, and I've always been a Notorious B.I.G. fan from back in the day. It's good party music, it's got a good feel and beat, and that's what the kids are listening to.”

Joe McMahon – McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds

“'60s on 6 on Sirius Radio. All the great bands were in the '60s – There were the Beatles of course, and Elvis had some great songs in the '60s. Herman and the Hermits, Tommy James and the Shondells.”

Freddie Seitz – Brookdale Sales

“Wilco. I've liked them ever since I was 20 years old, and they come out with great music all the time.”

Chris Bernhard – Hidden Lake Farm

“Probably corny 1990s pop music. I usually listen to the news or something else, so I rarely listen to music, but if I had to pop a CD out of the case, it's probably something that's been sitting in there for 15 years.”

Central Banker Leads McMahon Of Saratoga’s 2021 Stallion Roster

McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., revealed the advertised fees for its 2021 stallion roster, led by fast-rising sire Central Banker.

“Anne and I purchased our Fitch Road farm 50 years ago this March,” said farm owner Joe McMahon. “We feel fortunate that we have been well supported by the New York breeding community all of those years. Recent months have been very hard for everyone involved in racing and breeding, and we are reducing the fees for our stallions for the 2021 breeding season to reflect the challenges brought on by 2020.”

Central Banker, a Grade 2-winning son of Speightstown, will stand the upcoming season for an advertised fee of $6,000. His runners are led by multiple stakes winner and graded stakes-placed Bankit, whose earnings are now in excess of $700,000, and multiple stakes winner Newly Minted.

Central Banker covered 114 mares in 2020, and he currently sits second on New York's general sire list by progeny earnings this season, with $1,878,786.

Solomini, a Grade 1-placed son of Curlin, will stand for $5,000. He stood his first season in 2020, and he covered 123 mares, the most of any New York stallion.

Rounding out the roster is Redesdale, a son of Speightstown whose first foals are weanlings of 2020. He'll stand for $3,000 in 2021 after covering 66 mares in 2020, and 81 mares in his inaugural season a year earlier.

“We feel confident that the New York breeding program remains the strongest of its kind in the world, and our goal is to offer the best valued and most attractive stallions outside of Kentucky,” McMahon said. “We hope these reduced fees help New York breeders through this difficult time, and we look forward to working with our breeders in the coming months.”

Following are the advertised 2021 fees for the McMahon of Saratoga stallion roster:

Central Banker – $6,000
Redesdale – $3,000
Solomini – $5,000

First Winner For Late Stallion Effinex Comes At Saratoga

A powerful turn of foot in the stretch by Effinity led to the first winner for the late New York sire Effinex on Sunday at Saratoga Race Course, BloodHorse reports.

After a slightly troubled start, Effinity ran three-wide into the turn, then swung even wider to take over the lead and draw off in the stretch by four lengths. The colt completed the 5 1/2-furlong race in 1:06.36 over a fast main track under jockey Luis Saez. Brad Cox saddled the colt for Zilla Racing Stables.

Effinity was bred in New York by Barry Ostrager, out of the stakes-placed Freud mare Letsshootpool. Grade 3-placed Show Me the Cash is in his extended family.

Effinex, a son of Mineshaft, stood his lone season at Questroyal North in Stillwater, N.Y., then moved to McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds at the end of the season. The stallion died suddenly in the fall of 2017 at age six due to a pulmonary artery rupture, leaving just one crop of runners.

He was one of New York's most popular stallions in his lone season at stud, retiring to his native state after a racing career that saw him win nine of 28 starts for earnings of $3,312,950.

Effinex got better with age, developing into one of North America's top handicap division runners with wins in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap, two editions of the G2 Suburban Handicap, the G2 Oaklawn Handicap, and the G3 Excelsior Stakes. He also finished second in the 2015 Breeders' Cup Classic.
