Kessaar On The Move To Italy

Former Irish-based stallion Kessaar (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}–Querulous, by Raven's Pass) has been purchased by Renew Italian Breeding and will stand at Scuderia Melissa Cipriani in Castelnuovo Berardenga, Italy this year. Standing for €5,000, the stallion will be administered by Mattia Cadrobbi and managed by Marco Bozzi and Guido Berardelli.

Bred by Tally-Ho Stud, the G2 Mill Reef S. and G3 Sirenia S. hero was a 100,000gns Tattersalls October yearling, and raced in the colours of Mohammed Al Qatami and Khalid Al Mudhaf while trained by John Gosden. Winning three of his seven career starts–all at two–Kessaar retired to Tally-Ho in 2019. His extended family features GII Pennsylvania Derby and GII Ohio Derby winner and sire Gone Astray (Dixie Union), and his eldest foals are 4-year-olds.

At stud, he has sired 46 winners anchored by Italian stakes winner Melfi (Ire), who was third in the G2 Gran Criterium. His first-crop filly Ipanema Princess (Ire) was third in the G3 Prix Six Perfections, and he has an additional pair of stakes horses to date.

Standing alongside the Italian newcomer is Frankel (GB)'s half-brother Morpheus (GB), who will command €3,500.

Sea The Stars Filly Tops Trade At SGA Sale In Italy

Agent Marco Bozzi snapped up a daughter of Sea The Stars (Ire) for €160,000 to top trade during the one-day SGA Yearling Sale in Milan, Italy on Saturday. He was the leading buyer by gross with seven purchased for €316,000.

From Razza del Velino, lot 14 is out of the G3 Italian 1000 Guineas runner-up Cronsa (Ger) (Martino Alonso {Ire}). The filly is a half-sister to G3 Premio Dormello victress Sweet Gentle Kiss (Ire) (Henrythenavigator) and the stakes winner Sunset Key (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}).

Botti France picked up lot 7, a colt by New Bay (GB) out of Cajamarca (Fr) (Amico Fritz {Ger}). Sold by Razza del Velino, the relative of Holy Moon (Ire) (Hernando {Ire}) and her bevy of five stakes winners led by G1 Irish Oaks and G1 Yorkshire Oaks heroine and Arc runner-up Sea Of Class (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), was knocked down for €90,000.

First-season sire Magna Grecia (Ire) already has seven winners among them Listed Prix Yacowlef hero Myconian (Ire) to his name, and Scuderia Incolinx shelled out €100,000 for a son of the Coolmore stallion (lot 10) and the Mr. Greeley mare Ceoldrama. From the Nedo Giudici draft, the colt is a half-brother to listed winner Teresa Mendoza (Ire) (Territories {Ire}), who has been placed three times at the group level.

Saxon Warrior (Jpn), who sired his seventh stakes winner on Friday, was the sire of lot 17, a colt out of the Excellent Art (GB) mare Epica (Ire), who was placed twice at listed level. Offered by Razza Vedano, the colt joined the Scuderia Incolinx fold for €80,000.

Fresh off siring his second Group 1 winner in Regional (GB) at Haydock on Saturday, Territories (Ire) was also the sire of note of a filly out of Pardon (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) (lot 28) during Saturday's session. She sold to Giotti Simone for €70,000 from the Razza del Sole consignment.

Jumping Filly Tops Arqana Opener

There was a steady start to proceedings at Arqana's two-day February Sale, with figures pretty much on par with last year's trade and the National Hunt filly Be A Nice Girl (Fr) (Bathyrhon {Ger}) topping the first session at €120,000

A decent clearance rate of 78% from 141 horses sold brought turnover of €1,772,000, with the average and median both contracting slightly at €12,567 and €6,000 respectively.

The day's leading lady was the 4-year-old hurdler offered as lot 63 by her trainer Jean-Pierre Fertillet. Happily for him, Be A Nice Girl will be returning to his stable after she was signed for by Marco Bozzi on behalf of an unnamed French owner.

“She has been bought for a good client and she will stay with Jean-Pierre Fertillet,” confirmed the agent. “It's the first time they have bought a jumper and €120,000 is an awful lot of money but they were happy to do that and she is a very nice mare.”

Bred by Richard Venn and Pascal Noue, Be A Nice Girl was originally sold as a 2-year-old for €23,000 and has made just one start to date. Her dam Turgotine (Fr) (Turgeon {GB}) is a full-sister to the dam of the dual Grade 1-winning steeplechaser Allaho (Fr) (No Risk At All {Fr}).

A few lots later, the 3-year-old Marynder (Fr) (Pedro The Great) was knocked down to Alessandro Marconi for €90,000 and will eventually end up racing overseas. Trained last season by Joel Boisnard, the gelding ran just three times, winning over a mile at Chantilly and placing at Deauville.

Marconi said of lot 66, who hails from the family of Godolphin's dual Grade I-winning filly Questing (GB) (Hard Spun), “His dam is by Hard Spun, a stallion that I really like and who I think is a very good broodmare sire.We don't know yet if he will race on in France; the owners' premiums are interesting. We will have a think but the final objective remains the Middle East.”

Signing under the name of his Horse Racing Advisory, Hubert Barbe went to €90,000 in pursuit of lot 38, the AQPS mare Green Dragoness (Fr) (Enrique {Ire}), who was consigned by Haras du Lieu des Champs on behalf of trainer David Cottin. A winner last season herself over fences, the 6-year-old is well credentialed as a broodmare prospect as she is a half-sister to the champion French chaser and 11-time winner Blue Dragon (Fr) (Califet {Fr}) as well as to the five-time winner Fabulous Dragoness (Fr) (Poliglote {GB}). Barbe advised that Green Dragoness will now join Haras de Couely.

Of the in-foal mares offered for sale later in the session, two daughters of Galileo (Ire) sold for €80,000 each. Denis Brosnan's Epona Bloodstock signed for lot 193, Haras de Bouquetot's full-sister to Listed winner Cameron Highland (GB) and a half-sister to the Group 3 winner Solid Stone (Ire) (Shamardal). Named Ghand (GB), the 8-year-old was sold in foal to Bouquetot's Romanised (Ire).

Marc-Antoine Berghgracht bought the unraced Balkis (Fr) (lot 154), who is also by Galileo and consigned by Bouquetot. A daughter of the GI American Oaks winner Harmonious (Dynaformer), she was sold carrying her second foal by Bated Breath (GB).

The sale continues on Wednesday from 11am local time.

Derby Winner Aiming For New World Record

An awful lot has changed in the world of Italian breeding since Nearco (Ity) was bred in 1935 by the legendary Federico Tesio. The Pharos (GB) colt's faultless 14-race career, which included victories in the Derby Italiano and Grand Prix de Paris, led to his sale, on the cusp of World War II, to stand in England at Beech House Stud, where a bomb shelter was constructed to ensure his safety.

It proved to be a precaution worth taking. As the sire of Nearctic and grandsire of Northern Dancer, Nearco's influence on the breed has been profound, even while the Thoroughbred heritage of his home country has sadly dwindled during that time. His breeder famously uttered the words to which fans of the world's most famous Classic cling in what sometimes feels like vain hope that its own significance will endure.

“The Thoroughbred exists because its selection has depended, not on experts, technicians or zoologists, but on a piece of wood: the winning post of the Epsom Derby,” decried Tesio.

He would then perhaps have appreciated the fact that Nearco's fifth-generation male-line descendant, the 2013 Derby winner Ruler Of The World (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), has recently arrived in Tuscany to continue his stud career at the Cipriani family's Allevamenti della Berardenga, also know as Scuderia Andy Cap.

The beautifully bred son of the Kingmambo mare Love Me True counts Duke of Marmalade (Ire) (Danehill) among his four black-type siblings, and sired the four-time Group/Grade 1 winner Iridessa (Ire) in his first crop. His 3-year-old daughter La Petite Coco (Ire) has also been something of a revelation this season, winning four of her six starts, including the G2 Blandford S. and G3 Give Thanks S.

If recent activity at the farm near Siena is anything to go by, Ruler Of The World may find himself pretty busy during the early part of 2022. He replaces his fellow Classic winner and son of Galileo, Magician (Ire), who set a new Italian record when covering 134 mares at the farm last year before returning to Ireland to stand at Meelin Stud.

Bloodstock agent Marco Bozzi will be managing the stallion along with his partners Guido Berardelli and Mattia Cadrobbi, all of whom were also involved with Magician. Cadrobbi was named president of the Association of Italian Breeders (ANAC) in March but is stepping down from that role following Saturday's election, though he remains on the board. Rome-based Bozzi and Berardelli have been in partnership for 28 years and set up the Italian Thoroughbred and Trotting Sales (ITS) which has recently ended its collaboration with fellow Italian sales company SGA.

Explaining the background to Ruler Of The World's transfer to Italy, Bozzi says, “In the past we have stood College Chapel (GB), Deportivo (GB), King Charlemagne (Ire), and then we had a gap for a long time. Coolmore wanted to relocate Requinto (Ire) so we took him, and he went very well. After Requinto was relocated to Saudi Arabia we had the opportunity to have Magician last year and he was very popular.”

He continues, “Magician was then requested to go back to Ireland and we needed some more horses. I have a good relationship with Haras de Bouquetot, and Benoit [Jeffroy] offered me Ruler Of The World. This is very good for Italy to have a Derby winner, and the sire of a Group 1 winner. He's a magnificent-looking horse with a wonderful pedigree and we have already had a lot of interest in nominations. La Petite Coco beat Love last time out and is staying in training.”

Ruler Of The World is not the only new arrival at Allevamenti della Berardenga for the 2022 season, as he will be joined later this week by Cappella Sansevero (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), who moves to Italy after six seasons in Ireland under Micheal Orlandi's Compas Stallions banner.

“Ruler Of The World is a stayer and we needed something with a bit of speed,” said Bozzi. “I didn't know Micheal Orlandi but he is of Italian origin and he offered us Cappella Sansevero, who has 70 foals this year. I think we can get him at least 50 or 60 mares. He's by Showcasing and is an outcross.”

Magician's book of mares in 2021 was not far off 25% of the entire broodmare population in Italy, which has dropped from around 1,700 only a decade ago. The stallion ranks have however also been boosted this year with the arrival of the Shadwell duo of Markaz (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Adaay (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}).

Siena is better known for another form of horse racing as the historic home of the Palio, and for those sending their mares to the farm run by Melissa Cipriani, there are some unusual incentives. Located less than an hour from Florence and under two hours from Pisa and Rome, that stunning area of Tuscany is home not just to a number of breeders but also some star names.

Bozzi says, “There are lovely old villas and vineyards surrounding the stud. Sting and Leonard DiCaprio have villas nearby and it's a beautiful area. Some of the Palio jockeys are clients of mine and they have mares.”

He adds, “Many breeders bring their mares and then spend a long weekend locally. Siena never gets too cold–it has a micro-climate which is perfect for the mares. It's an area that includes a lot of breeders and that's why it is a great place to stand a stallion.”
