Maiden Winner Call Me Jamal Bringing Veteran Trainer Puhich To Southwest Stakes

Recent Oaklawn maiden special weights graduate Call Me Jamal is pointing for Oaklawn's $750,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles Jan. 29, the gelding's trainer Mike Puhich said Friday morning.

Owned by prominent Pacific Northwest heart surgeon Mark Dedomenico, Call Me Jamal was a front-running winner Dec. 18 under Geovanni Franco. In the 1 1/16-mile race, Call Me Jamal surrendered the lead in deep stretch before battling back to win by a head. It was his third career start and first around two turns.

“If he's as good in two weeks as he is today, he's definitely going,” Puhich said, referring to the Southwest. “He's ready.”

A chestnut son of the late Malibu Moon, Call Me Jamal is named after Seattle Seahawks All-Pro safety Jamal Adams.

The Southwest is Oaklawn's second of four Kentucky Derby points races. The series began with the $250,000 Smarty Jones Stakes Jan. 1.

Other locally based horses pointing for the Southwest include Dash Attack for trainer Kenny McPeek, Barber Road (John Ortiz), Ben Diesel (Dallas Stewart) and Osbourne (Ron Moquett).

Dash Attack, Barber Road and Ben Diesel finished 1-2-7, respectively, in the 1-mile Southwest. Osbourne finished second in the $400,000 Springboard Mile Stakes Dec. 17 at Remington Park in his last start.

All four horses recorded workouts over a fast track Friday morning. Dash Attack (:49.80), Ben Diesel (:49) and Osbourne (:49.20) went a half-mile. Barber Road (1:03.60) went 5 furlongs.

Smarty Jones third-place finisher Ignitis is under consideration for the Southwest, Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said.

Like the Smarty Jones, the Southwest will offer 17 points to the top four finishes (10-4-2-1) toward starting eligibility for the Kentucky Derby. Post positions for the Southwest will be drawn Jan. 24.

Last Samurai Holds Off Super Stock To Win Poinsettia At Oaklawn

Jon Court, still riding winners at age 61, showed that a jockey can turn in a bold ride at any age with his late-stretch move on Last Samurai to win the inaugural Poinsettia Stakes at Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort in Hot Springs, Ark. After stalking the pace, a wide move on the far turn gave Last Samurai the clear running lane he needed to battle Super Stock and emerge victorious by three-quarters of a length.

Flash of Mischief got the best of a clean break, getting out to an early lead over Myopic and Super Stock into the first turn. Down the backstretch, Flash of Mischief was a length in front, with Last Samurai stalking in fourth. Into the far turn, Flash of Mischief still held the advantage, with Court moving Last Samurai three-wide to find a running lane for their stretch bid.

Into the Oaklawn straight, Flash of Mischief held a half-length lead with Last Samurai and Super Stock driving on his outside. Those two dueled down the latter part of the stretch, with Last Samurai digging in to take over the lead inside the last sixteenth of a mile. He was three-quarters of a length in front at the wire, with Super Stock second and Flash of Mischief holding on for third. Defeater, Ram, Myopic, and Simovitch rounded out the field.

The final time for the 1 1/16 miles was 1:43.70. Find this race's chart here.

Last Samurai paid $10.20, $4.40, and $3.00. Super Stock paid $3.60 and $2.40. Flash of Mischief paid $2.80.

Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Last Samurai is by Mailbu Moon out of the First Samurai mare Lady Samuri. He is trained by Dallas Stewart and owned by Willis Horton Racing, who purchased the colt from consigner Gene Recio for $175,000 at the March 2020 Ocala Breeders' Sales Company Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale. With his win in the Poinsettia, the 3-year-old colt has two wins in nine starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of three wins in 12 starts and career earnings of $312,744.

Spendthrift Farm Breaks Ground On B. Wayne Hughes Visitors Center

Spendthrift Farm has broken ground on a new 8,000 square-foot tourism facility that will be named the B. Wayne Hughes Visitors Center in honor of its late founder.

“We take it on as our responsibility now to continue to build on the vision Wayne had for Spendthrift and the sport of horse racing,” said Eric Gustavson, owner of Spendthrift and son-and-law to the late B. Wayne Hughes. “It's only fitting to name the new visitors center after him because it largely represents his love for the industry and desire to share it with people. That's what we look forward to doing.”

Scheduled to open spring or summer of 2022, the B. Wayne Hughes Visitors Center will be located in the heart of the historic farm, directly between Spendthrift's stallion complex and main office. The facility will become the focal point for Spendthrift's plans to enhance tourism and experience opportunities for horse racing fans and the general public.

The two-story visitors center will contain a trophy room, gift shop, and entertainment & office space, and will include such features as a life-size statue of the late Malibu Moon at the entrance, Authentic's 2020 Kentucky Derby trophy and blanket of roses, Beholder's Breeders' Cup & Eclipse Award trophies, Into Mischief artifacts, a famous horses memorial and interactive history elements throughout.

Son of Malibu Moon Identifies Himself as a ‘TDN Rising Star’

H P Moon (Malibu Moon), controversially scratched at the gate due to a horse identification issue out of an intended debut at Saratoga July 31, proved well worth the wait with this jaw-dropping Pimlico unveiling against five overmatched rivals. Working a steady diet of bullet drills at trainer Lacey Gaudet's Delaware base, including a four-furlong move in :47 (1/63) Aug. 14, the 2-5 choice took control from his rail draw and was pressed through an opening quarter in :23.10. He began to shake clear approaching the quarter pole, and put on a show down the stretch while racing well in hand en route to a geared-down, 9 3/4-length decision. Bold Leader (Keen Ice) was second.

H P Moon's dam Fun Affair, a daughter of champion 2-year-old filly and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine Caressing and a half-sister to champion 3-year-old colt West Coast (Flatter), produced a filly by Connect this year and was bred back to Malibu Moon. The Malibu Moon/Distorted Humor cross is also responsible for two-time graded winner and millionaire Stanford. H P Moon RNA'd for $385,000 after breezing an eighth in a strong :10 at FTFMAR. Malibu Moon, who died in May at age 24, has now sired an impressive 23 'TDN Rising Stars.'

“When he got to the paddock, the identifier said he had markings that were incorrect and they needed to be corrected before he could run, so they had him scratched at the gate,” trainer Lacey Gaudet said of his Saratoga scratch. “We were very high on him. It was extremely disappointing.”

She continued, “The owners all called and said, 'Let's go back to Saratoga.' I said, 'You know what guys? All eyes are going to be on this horse when he runs back. Let's make it look good. Let's give them something to talk about. Honestly, if the owners allow me to, we'll probably aim small and go to Churchill for an allowance race. That's probably the right thing to do. It gets a little sticky this time of year because they all want to start stretching horses out for the Breeders' Cup, and there's no too many short 2-year-old races. We'll see what happens.”

2nd-Pimlico, $47,380, Msw, 8-21, 2yo, 6f, 1:10.76, ft, 9 3/4 lengths.
