Foy Title For Lope De Vega’s Place Du Carrousel

Al Shaqab Racing's Place Du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), already a Group 1 winner in last year's G1 Prix de l'Opera, defeated defending champion Iresine (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) by a neck to take Sunday's G2 Qatar Prix Foy at ParisLongchamp. The latter was a half-length to the good of 2022 G1 Deutsches Derby and G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis Bayerisches Zuchtrennen hero Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in third.

The 4-year-old filly was the 13-5 second choice behind her G1 Prix Ganay conqueress Iresine at 1-2. Content to race midfield as Plesant Jane (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) forged to the front while watched by Fenelon (Fr) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), Place Du Carrousel perched one off the fence next to Sammarco with Iresine last of the quintet. Drifting back a spot to fourth on the bend, the daughter of G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris victress Traffic Jam (Ire) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}) remained well covered up, as the field neared the straight. Closing willingly when given her cue, she quickly drew on even terms at the 200-metre mark and found just enough late to withstand the withering run of Iresine in the final strides.

Rupert Pritchard Gordon, racing manager for Al Shaqab Racing, said, “The filly showed that she's in good form. She's still fresh because she hasn't run much this year, due to a slight setback in the spring. The weather conditions are exceptional today, and Monsieur Fabre preferred to go for the Qatar Prix Foy rather than the [G1] Qatar Prix Vermeille, anticipating that there would be less pace in the Foy.”

Since her Opera heroics last October, Place Du Carrousel was a never-nearer fifth in the Ganay this spring, but after a break, was a winner over good to soft ground in the G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron at Deauville in August. Connections are now dreaming of the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

“When we decided to keep her in training at four, after her success in the Prix de l'Opéra Longines last year, the idea was

to aim her at the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe,” he added. “So if all goes well between now and then, we'll be heading to the race of dreams.”

Mandore International Agency, on behalf of Al Shaqab Racing, picked up the bay for €260,000 out of the Arqana Select Sale at Deauville in September of 2020 from the Ballylinch Stud draft.

Pedigree Notes

One of 19 Group 1 winners for her Ballylinch sire, Place Du Carrousel is the first foal out of Traffic Jam, who also ran second in the G2 Prix de Pomone. Since foaling the Foy winner, she has delivered four fillies–the 3-year-old Nariman Point (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a 1.05-million gns Kingman (GB) juvenile named Monyat Galby (Ire), a yearling by Sea The Stars (Ire) who is consigned as lot 158 by Ballylinch to the upcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, and a full-sister to the winner this term.

Her third dam, Sweet Emotion (Ire) (Bering {GB}), foaled Listed Midsummer S. victor Winged Cupid (Ire) (In The Wings {GB}), who also ran second in the G1 Racing Post Trophy. This is the extended family of the high class dual Group 1 winner Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).

Making Waves: Grade A Ballet At Saratoga

In this series, the TDN takes a look at notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column is highlighted by the victory of Bolshoi Ballet in a the Sword Dancer S. at Saratoga Race Course.

 

A Song And A Dance At Saratoga

Westerberg, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith's Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) delivered his second Grade I in the Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer S. at Saratoga on Saturday (video). Successful in the GI Belmont Derby two years previously, the 5-year-old entire won for Aidan O'Brien.

Bred by Lynch-Bages and Rhinestone Bloodstock, the son of Alta Anna (Fr) (Anabaa) is a full-brother to G2 Sandown Classic and G3 Irish St. Leger Trial hero Southern France (Ire), who was also third in the G1 Irish St Leger.

The great Galileo was the stallion linchpin for many years at Coolmore Stud in Ireland and Bolshoi Ballet is one of 99 Grade/Group 1 winners for the deceased son of Sadler's Wells. In the U.S., 64 of his 175 runners (36%) have won, with 27 of them (15%) winning stakes. An outstanding 15 scored at the highest level (8.6%), including three-time top-level winner Cape Blanco (Ire).

 

Honourable Mention

Grade II winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Carl Spackler (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) continued to pad his resume with a 3 1/2-length score in the GIII Saranac S. at Saratoga for e Five Racing Thoroughbreds and trainer Chad Brown on Friday (video). The son of graded stakes winner Zindaya first featured in Making Waves in February.

Lope De Vega’s Beauvatier Remains Unbeaten After Prix La Rochette Triumph

Yann Barberot trainee Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}–Enchanting Skies {Ire}, by Sea The Stars {Ire}), who went three-for-three in July's Listed Prix Roland de Chambure at Deauville when last seen, continued his impressive rise through the grades with a comfortable victory in Sunday's G3 Prix La Rochette at ParisLongchamp.

The 3-10 favourite, who attained 'TDN Rising Star' status at Chantilly in May, was under a firm hold off the pace in fourth through the initial fractions of this pattern-race bow. Making smooth headway into contention in the straight, he quickened smartly to seize control approaching the final furlong and was pushed out in the closing stages to easily withstand the late bid of Evade (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) by a length. Fellow Rising Star Havana Cigar (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) was a neck adrift in third.

“I am so delighted and how lucky we are to have such a young prospect who keeps winning all the time,” said winning owner Gitte Allaire. “I hope this is just the beginning of a long story. Maxime [Guyon] said he was very satisfied with the performance and the horse did exactly what he wanted him to do. Maxime could have asked him anything, he did the job and could have done so much more. We'll leave talk of the [Oct. 1 G1 Prix Jean-Luc] Lagardere to our trainer Yann Barberot. I want to congratulate Yann and the whole team.”

Beauvatier, a €160,000 Arqana August purchase and half to a yearling filly by Siyouni {Fr}), is the first of two foals produced by Listed Prix de Thiberville runner-up Enchanting Skies (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), herself a sale-topping €500,000 Baden-Baden September yearling in 2016. The February-foaled dark bay's dam is one of four stakes performers out of Listed Kolner Fruhjahrs-Stuten-Preis third Estefania (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), headed by G1 Preis von Europa victor Empoli (Ger) (Halling). Estefania, in turn, is out of a half-sister to multiple Group 1-winning G2 German 1000 Guineas and G2 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Elle Danzig (Ger) (Roi Danzig). Beauvatier becomes Lope De Vega's 66th pattern-race winner.

Carl Spackler Dominant In Saranac

He might need to give that gopher a head start.

'TDN Rising Star' Carl Spackler (Ire) (Lope de Vega [Ire}) continued his dominance over the New York turf and picked up his second straight graded stakes win Friday at the Spa, taking the GIII Saranac S. under Tyler Gaffalione for e Five Racing. Victorious just three weeks back with a come-from-behind effort in the GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. Aug. 11, the Chad Brown trainee was bet like the class of the field, going off at 1-5 while facing just four rivals.

Much closer to the front in his third try over the 1 1/16-mile distance, Carl Spackler stayed right up outside of Taking Candy (Twirling Candy) to pace the group through a moderate opening quarter in :23.58. The favorite allowed his rival to go on with it up the backstretch but was never out of range as the top pair opened up a clear advantage over the remaining three entries. Restrained while racing several paths off the rail, he stayed patient under Gaffalione as the field began to group up into the far turn. Head to head with Taking Candy past the quarter pole, Carl Spackler always seemed to have the measure of his rival and, once set down for the run into the final eighth, cruised right on past and opened up. Gafflione took one look behind and rode hands and heels to the wire for the easiest of wins. Taking Candy held on for second ahead of Lost Ark (Violence), the half-brother to champion 3-year-old filly Nest (Curlin).

“Once we had a target, I felt pretty good,” said winning trainer Chad Brown. “I thought we would be on the lead actually, but Tyler [Gaffalione] knows this horse so well and, with all his horses, he comes well prepared. These short fields with a short price can be tricky sometimes, and I just said, 'Look, ride it loose and if you go to the lead, which I expect, fine. If someone really wants to go, it's even better,' because with a target, it worked out perfect.”

“He was traveling well within himself,” added Gaffalione. “I just wanted to try and get him to shut off. We have bigger things down the road, so didn't want to do too much today.”

Carl Spackler is one of 116 stakes winner and 65 group/graded winners worldwide for his prolific sire. His dam Zindaya, herself a graded-stakes winner for Chad Brown in America, has produced several well-received offspring in Europe including a pair of Tattersalls October Yearling Book 1 entries in Tribal Warrior (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) who brought 280,000gns and her 2021 Frankel filly for 450,000gns, both by the Godolphin operation. Zindaya is a half-sister to GISW Western Aristocrat (Mr. Greeley). She reported a full-sister to Carl Spackler last year who is set to sell with Ballylinch Stud as lot 213 during Book 1 of this year's October sale, was not bred for 2023, and visited Uncle Mo for 2024.
