Joseph will also send out A. P.'s Secret (Cupid), a $95,000 FTKSEL yearling to $150,000 OBSAPR 2-year-old off a :10 2/5 breeze. Stonestreet Stables LLC's $600,000 Keeneland September 2020 acquisition Bombdiggity (Into Mischief) makes her first start here on behalf of conditioner Steve Asmussen. The daughter of stakes-placed Checkupfromzneckup (Dixie Union) is a half to five-for-five 'TDN Rising Star' Carribean Caper (Speightstown), who was most recently a six-length winner of the GIII Dogwood S. here Sept. 25; and to a Tapit yearling filly who sold for $990,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga. She hails from the female family of A.P. Indy, et al.

The Brad Cox barn will send out a pair of well-related newcomers of its own. Godolphin homebred Hidden Wonder (Curlin) was produced by a Tapit half-sister to champion 3-year-old and late Darley stallion Bernardini (A.P. Indy). Savo Island (Quality Road), meanwhile, was a $220,000 KEESEP RNA who will carry the colors of Qatar Racing. She is a full-sister to Grade I-winning juvenile and freshman sire Klimt. MSP dam Inventive Dixie Union) sold for $380,000 at KEENOV '19 carrying a City of Light (Quality Road) colt who subsequently brought $435,000 this Keeneland September from the BSW/Crow Colts Group for which Cox will train. Savo Island is bred on the extremely potent Quality Road–Dixie Union cross also responsible for the likes of champion 2-year-old filly Caledonia Road and GISW Salty.

Lady Jeopardy (Liam's Map) was a productive pinhook, costing just $17,000 at KEESEP but $230,000 at OBS June after a :21 2/5 breeze. Eclipsed (Exaggerator) resurfaces after finishing second to subsequent Debutante S. heroine Behave Virginia (Unified) in a late May MSW here. Dialed In Tops Darby Dan Farm’s 2022 Stallion Roster At $15,000

Darby Dan Farm has set 2022 stud fees for its roster of 12 stallions that will stand the upcoming breeding season, led by Dialed In who will stand for $15,000 S&N, the same fee as a year ago. The roster also features Tapiture, Higher Power, and Modernist, new for 2022, who will each stand for $10,000 S&N.

Dialed In, champion freshman sire of 2016 and a perennial leading sire of his crop ever since, is a leading sire of 3-year-olds in 2021 with nine black-type sophomores and five graded stakes horses. Among his top runners on the year are 3-year-olds Super Stock, winner of the $1 million Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and the Ellis Park Derby, and Mr. Wireless, winner of the G3 Indiana Derby and the G3 West Virginia Derby.

Tapiture continues to sire runners at the highest levels. The son of Tapit is far and away the number-one third-crop sire by winners in 2021 with 115 and he ranks fourth by progeny earnings ($5,984,770). Tapiture also tops the cumulative third-crop sire list by winners with 168 and ranks third with lifetime earnings of $11,864,933.

Among Tapiture's leading runners this year are Vertical Threat, winner of the Russell Road Stakes, You Talkin to Me, winner of the Iowa Breeders' Derby, and impressive 2-year-old stakes winner and stakes-placed Flashfordani, winner of the Birdcatcher Stakes. He is also represented by Jesus' Team, runner-up to division leader Knicks Go in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes in January and his sire's leading earner on the year, having banked $821,800 this season.

Higher Power will stand his second season at stud in 2022. A dominant 5 1/4-length winner of the 2019 G1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar, where he defeated a field made up entirely of graded stakes winners, including three Grade 1 winners, the son of Medaglia d'Oro was a five-time winner of more than $1.5 million. He posted three triple-digit Beyers in his stellar career, including a 107 Beyer in the Pacific Classic. Stakes-placed on dirt and turf, Higher Power also placed in the Breeders' Cup Classic, G1 Hollywood Gold Cup, and the G1 Awesome Again Stakes.

Modernist, a multiple graded stakes winner by leading sire Uncle Mo out of the Bernardini mare Symbolic Gesture, a half-sister to both Sweet Catomine, champion 2-year-old filly and winner of the 2004 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, and Life Is Sweet, winner of the 2009 Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic, has been retired and will stand his first season at Darby Dan in 2022 in partnership with Matt Bowling of Bowling Bloodstock. Winner of the 2020 G2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds and the G3 Excelsior Stakes at Aqueduct the following year, Modernist earned $576,300 for Marty and Pam Wygod and trainer Bill Mott.

Darby Dan will once again be offering various incentive programs in 2022 to provide value to breeders, including Profit Protection, Share the Upside, Black-Type Bonanza, and Goldmine 20/20 Match Program.

Klimt Filly Kicks Home Nicely in Saratoga Unveiling

LADY DANAE (f, 2, Klimt–Anea, by Unbridled's Song) sparked some deja vu Friday, scoring at 11-1 a week after another Klimt juvenile won first out at the same odds sprinting also on the Saratoga lawn. This :10 flat OBSAPR breezer was bidding to become her freshman sire (by Quality Road)'s eighth winner overall, but was dismissed a bit by the bettors in an event with many viable options. Sitting in midpack while out in the clear, the chestnut revved up out widest spinning for home and kicked on nicely from there to out-finish Bubble Rock (More Than Ready) and open up by two promising lengths. The winner's dam is out of precocious MSW Desire to Excel (Mt. Livermore), second in the 2006 GIII Schuylverille S. here and later the dam of local turf sprint stakes winner Artest (Hard Spun). Anea, by one of Machmer Hall's favorite broodmare sires, sold for $12,000 in 2019 carrying another Klimt filly. Mountaineer Jockey Puts Goggles To Good Use In Winning Race

Baytown Valleygirl was racing to the outside of favored Golden Hughes at the top of the stretch in the fifth race on the June 30 program at Mountaineer Park in Chester, W.Va., when the 2-year-old Klimt filly's rider, Odhair Mayta, lost control of his whip, which fell to the track.

Luis Rivera, aboard Golden Hughes, began urging his mount with left-handed encouragement, and she appeared to put her head in front briefly.

After losing his whip, Mayta gave his filly a hand ride, but then approaching the sixteenth pole ripped the goggles off of his head with his right hand and immediately began slapping the filly on the shoulder and showing her the goggles between strikes. She poked her head in front and edged away gradually to win by a neck.

It was the first victory in six starts for Baytown Valleygirl, trained by Paul McEntee for Wagner Racing and McEntee Racing. Mayta was winning for the 17th time in 99 starts at Mountaineeer this year, putting him sixth in the rider standings.

This wouldn't be the first time that a resourceful jockey used goggles to encourage a mount. In 2015, Jose Lezcano was cleared by the New York State Gaming Commission for using his goggles on a mount after dropping his whip. A steward who said Lezcano violated two rules was overruled by a 5-0 commission vote, according to a report in Bloodhorse.com.

West Virginia Racing Rules state that “no electrical or mechanical device or other expedient designed to increase or retard the speed of a horse, other than the riding crop approved by the stewards, shall be possessed by anyone, or applied by anyone to the horse at any time on the grounds…whether during a race or otherwise.”

Are goggles an “expedient”? We'll leave that one up to the stewards.
