Keeneland September to Offer VR 360 Experience

Keeneland's upcoming September Yearling Sale will become the first Thoroughbred auction anywhere to broadcast from a 360-degree virtual perspective, enabling fans and horsemen to watch all the action taking place inside the Sales Arena from this unique vantage point during its two-day Book 1 on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 12-13.

“True to Keeneland's mission to expand our audience, educate fans and enhance the Thoroughbred industry, we believe the use of virtual technology provides an exciting way to put the public closer to the sale action,” Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said. “The unique VR 360 perspective puts you in the ring and offers an insider view for what promises to be an electrifying two-day Book 1 sale.”

Keeneland will broadcast the Book 1 sale in both the VR 360 perspective (expect a delay of approximately two minutes) as well as the traditional livestream view on Keeneland.com and Keeneland's YouTube channel. A total of 367 yearlings, among the finest members of the North American yearling crop, are cataloged over the two days. Sessions begin at 1 p.m. ET.

How to Watch in VR: Fans can watch on their desktop or mobile devices or via a VR headset.

How to Tune In with VR: This livestream will be available through the Keeneland 360 YouTube page accessible on desktop, mobile or headset. For more details or direct access to this stream, visit keeneland.com/360.

Keeneland also will make available a 360º viewing experience at Keeneland for guests to take part in the Saddling Paddock Chalet.

Additional recorded VR 360 views of the September Sale will be available via Keeneland's social media platforms over the course of the auction.

From Dusk A First Japanese Winner for Bolt d’Oro

FROM DUSK (c, 2, Bolt d'Oro–Foolish Cause, by Giant's Causeway) was crunched down to 9-10 favoritism to open his account at first asking and gutted it out over a turf course that might have been easier underfoot than he prefers. Away alertly, the dark bay set the pace, but had company to his outside in the form of third choice Yoshi Tanrei (Jpn) (Satono Aladdin {Jpn}) as they raced into the turn. More or less on even terms as they cut the corner into the straight, From Dusk poked his head in front while fairly conservatively handled approaching the final furlong and fought on bravely to score by three-parts of a length. “He had a nice draw and broke well from the gate,” said winning jockey Kohei Matsuyama. “He was very fresh and fit and had plenty left at the finish.” He is the first Japanese starter for his freshman sire (by Medaglia d'Oro) and became his 13th winner at the time. A $200,000 graduate of last year's Keeneland September Sale, From Dusk was knocked down to trainer Hideyuki Mori for $900,000 at this year's OBS March Sale after the Top Line Sales-consigned colt worked a furlong in :9 4/5. On behalf of this owner, Mori also bought Clos de Mesnil (Practical Joke) from Top Line for a sales-topping $750,000 at OBS last March. The filly is a three-time winner from seven starts in Japan. From Dusk is a half-brother to Foolish Humor (Distorted Humor), SW-US, SP-Can, $123,803, and his dam is a half-sister to the late three-time Grade I-winning turf router Get Stormy (Stormy Atlantic). Foolish Cause is the dam of a colt by ClassicEmpire foaled Feb. 9 of this year and was bred back to Bolt d'Oro. Sales history: $200,000 Ylg '21 KEESEP; $900,000 2yo '22 OBSMAR. EMETH AMOUR (f, 2, Union Rags–Trensa, by Giant's Causeway), a $220,000 Keeneland September graduate, is a full-sister to GISW juvenile and current Spendthrift stallion Free Drop Billy; a half to dual Group 1 winner, champion and Japanese first-crop sire Hawkbill (Kitten's Joy); and to the dam of GSW/GISP 'TDN Rising Star' Emmanuel (More Than Ready). The Jan. 27 foal looks to become the sixth winner from seven foals for the Michael Matz-trained Grade III-placed turf distaffer Trensa, a daughter of GI Ballerina S. winner Serape (Fappiano), whose other produce include treble Grade III winner Batique (Storm Cat). A half-brother to juvenile stakes winner Foolish Humor (Distorted Humor), the dark bay is out of a half-sister to the late Get Stormy (Stormy Atlantic), a three time Grade I winner on the turf. NITRO JOURNEY (c, 2, Speightstown–Twice the Lady, by Quiet American) was scooped up for $340,000 at last year's KEESEP sale about three months before half-brother Doppelganger (Into Mischief) earned 'TDN Rising Star' honors on Los Alamitos debut. The latter would go on to hit the board in this year's GII San Felipe S. and GIII Affirmed S. The colt's SW/MGSP dam was purchased for $350,000 by WinStar at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton November Sale and she has since amassed a perfect produce record from three previous foals to the races. 11th-KOK, Kokura Nisai S.-G3, ¥58.6k ($418k), 2yo, 1200mT
PROTOPOROS (JPN) (c, 2, War Front–Cavale Doree {Fr}, by Sunday Break {Jpn}) is the first foal from his French Group 3-winning dam, also third in the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, and who was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for the equivalent of $883,272 at the 2019 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. The bay debuted in the Carrot Farm green-and-white hoops going this distance at Chukyo June 16 and made light work of that group, graduating by 3 1/2 lengths as a 2-5 shot should (video, SC 1). Boppy O a First Graded Winner for Bolt d’Oro in With Anticipation

Just four days after his son Mounsieur Coco took the Proud Man S. over the Gulfstream all-weather, Boppy O (Bolt d'Oro) became the first graded-stakes winner for his freshman sire (by Medaglia d'Oro) and led home a top-three sweep for first-crop stallions when causing a 23-1 upset in Wednesday's GIII With Anticipation S. at Saratoga.

Ridden for some speed by Dylan Davis while making his first venture on the grass and over a distance of ground, the $190,000 Keeneland September yearling–a half-brother to last year's GII Best Pal S. hero and this season's GI Woody Stephens S. third, stablemate Pappacap (Gun Runner)–sat up right on the moderate pace set by fellow longshot El Conejito (Palace) through a half-mile in :50.09 over a turf course officially rated good, but tossing up times that suggested a fair bit more ease than that. Andthewinneris (Oscar Performance), a debut winner sprinting over the Keeneland turf course in April and favored by just less than $4,000 over the rail-drawn Battle of Normandy (City of Light) clocked the pacesetters from a close-up third and was first to come after them with every conceivable chance to run by. But he could not seal the deal when one-paced into the final eighth of a mile, and Boppy O kept on well enough to hit the line about a neck better than Battle of Normandy, who might have had his momentum stalled ever so slightly in upper stretch, but kicked on strongly to just miss.

“I was training Pappacap and Mr. Oxley called me at the sale and he said, 'Mark, have you looked at Pappacap's half-brother?' recollected rainer Mark Casse, who sent out Coinage (Tapit) to win last year's With Anticipation. “I said, 'I have and I really like him.' Then [Breeze Easy's] Mike Hall came up to me..and he said, 'Have you seen Pappacap's half-brother?' I said, 'I have, and Mr. Oxley's going to try to buy him. This is not going to be good.' So they said, 'Why don't we go together?' I called Mr. Oxley up and said, 'They're going to go after him, what do you think?' He said, 'Let's go partners.' And that's how it worked out.”

Just as Pappacap had done 371 days prior, Boppy O graduated at first asking in a five-furlong Gulfstream maiden May 20, but the bay never fired in this track's GII Sanford S., finishing a distant 10th behind Mo Strike (Uncle Mo).

“I kept telling the Oxleys and Mike Hall and Sam Ross after the race [the Sanford], 'Look, he's better than what you saw. I promise you, he's better than that,” Casse explained.

Pedigree Notes:

Boppy O is one of four winners from four to the races for Pappascat, who earned Grade III black-type with a longshot second in the 2014 GIII Cardinal H. over the turf course at Churchill Downs. The colt's stakes-placed second dam is also responsible for Fate Factor (The Factor), who has done her best work to date over synthetic tracks, with a pair of stakes placings at Turfway Park and a third on the Tapeta at Presque Isle Downs. The further female family includes four-time Peruvian champion Al Qasr (Aptitude), who won the Colonial Downs's Kitten's Joy S. while under the care of Ken McPeek in 2013.

Pappascap is the dam of a yearling colt by Omaha Beach, a colt foal by War Front's Classic-winning son War of Will and was bred to Candy Ride (Arg) this past breeding season.
