Eight Declared For Europe’s Juvenile Opener

Europe's first 2-year-old contest of the year, Marseille-Borely's five-furlong Prix de Carqueiranne, takes place Thursday morning and has attracted a final field of eight newcomers.

It features a trio hailing from the Fabrice Vermeulen yard, including €10,000 Arqana September graduate Bad Boy (Fr), who will become the first representative of Haras de Saint-Vincent's freshman sire Fas (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). The February-foaled bay is a son of Listed Prix Caravelle third Queendara (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), herself a daughter of Listed Prix Occitanie victrix and G3 Prix de Royaumont placegetter Dance In The Park (Fr) (Walk In The Park {Ire}).

Europe's second juvenile event, a €23,000 4 1/2-furlong test for newcomers, will take place Sunday at Lyon-Parilly. Pre-declaration entries include standard-bearers for first-season sires Calyx (GB) (Kingman {GB}), Donjuan Triumphant (Ire) (Dream Ahead), Inns Of Court (Ire) (Invicible Spirit {Ire}) and Palace Prince (Ger) (Areion {Ger}).

Ireland is slated to get underway on Mar. 25 at the Curragh, with its usually informative opening five-furlong maiden for youngsters, while Britain waits an extra week for Doncaster's £35,000 Apr. 1 Brocklesby, won last year by subsequent G2 July S. victor and three-time Group 1 placegetter Persian Force (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}).

Colts Vying For Just Desserts In Asahi Hai Futurity

Rated 109, just like fellow group winners Dolce More (Jpn) (Jpn) and Obamburumai (Jpn) (Discreet Cat), All Parfait (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}) is one of the more fancied runners as 17 colts line up for the 1600-metre G1 Asahi Hai Futurity S. at Hanshin on Sunday. Leaving from post three, the Ryoichi Endo homebred has won his past two starts, after running second in a Tokyo maiden in June. Resuming over this trip in a maiden at Nakayama on Oct. 2, he won by two lengths, prior to defeating Danon Touchdown (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {GB}) by a half-length over this course and distance in the G2 Daily Hai Nisai S. on Nov. 12.

Takuya Ono has ridden the horse in all his races and said, “He's coming along nicely, but he has to transport over to the track, so I don't want to overdo things with him. He found a good rhythm in the race last time after starting from a wide gate, and was strong in the finish.”

Undefeated in two starts–a Sapporo newcomer affair in August, and besting Granite (Jpn) (Danon Ballade {Jpn}) by 1 1/4 lengths in Tokyo's G3 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup on Oct. 8, Dolce More has been pleasing trainer Naosuke Sugai in his gallops.

“He has been training well, and while he's not one to really catch the eye, he's done enough work and looks fine,” said Sugai. “In his final work, checking his rhythm was more important than his time, and his breathing's been good. He has gained some weight, but that's him developing and it should help him in a race. He ran right-handed in his first race and I'm not worried about it being his first time at the course this time. He doesn't have any bad habits and he's quite a serious horse that can race well, so I don't have any worries with him and hope he can run a good race.”

Last year's champion sire in Britain and Ireland, and this term's European champion sire elect, Frankel (GB) has a pair of colts entered to build on his earlier Japanese successes in the winners Labeling (GB) and Tinia (Ire). Three of Frankel's four stakes winners in the Land of the Rising Sun are Group 1 scorers, with 2020 hero Grenadier Guards (Jpn) holding the stakes record for this race in a snappy 1:32.30. In addition, his Soul Stirring (Jpn) won the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies–the filly equivalent–as his very first top-level winner back in 2016, the first year the Juddmonte supremo had runners.

Trainer Yuichi Shikato commented on the prospects of Labeling, “There hasn't been long between races, but he's in very good shape. He ran a good race last time, and with the ability he seems to have, I'll look forward to things from now.”

Bolt d'Oro, who is an excruciatingly close three-way battle with Justify and Good Magic for leading freshman sire Stateside, is represented by $200,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $900,000 OBS March juvenile From Dusk. The progressive colt was second by a length in the G2 Keio Hai Nisai S. to the 109-rated Obamburumai on Nov. 5.

Saturday Insights: Loaded Maiden Kicks Off Alabama Day Card

Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency
1st-SAR, $100K, Msw, 2yo, 6 1/2f, post time: 1:05 p.m. ET
While the GI Alabama S. takes centerstage later on in the program, the Saturday lid-lifter at Saratoga looks a key race in prospect, with any number of booming pedigrees and lofty pricetags on display. Peter Leidel signed the ticket at an even $1 million for RAYMOND (Into Mischief) at Keeneland September last fall, with the colt's breeder Stonestreet Stables staying in for a share. The Apr. 21 foal is the third foal to the races from Stonestreet's GSW & GISP Teen Pauline (Tapit), whose daughter Cambria (Speightstown) took out the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Sprint in 2019. Robert Clay's Grandview went to $600,000 for Gilded Age (Medaglia d'Oro) at KEESEP, a son of Grade I-winning juvenile filly Angela Renee (Bernardini), who was purchased by Don Alberto Corp. at Fasig-Tipton November in 2015. The full-sister to MGISW sire To Honor and Serve and half to SW & GISP is from the  family of MGSW India (Hennessy), dam of Japanese dual-surface G1SW Mozu Ascot (Frankel {GB}) and of Silver Strand (Frosted), an impressive Saratoga debut winner Aug. 19. Peter Brant's Triple Elvis (Into Mischief), a $700,000 purchase by Demi O'Byrne out of last year's Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase, is a half-brother to multiple Grade III-winning turf router Made You Look (More Than Ready) and counts the irrepressible 11-time Grade I and Eclipse Award winner Serena's Song (Rahy) as his second dam. The supporting cast includes WinStar Farm & Siena Farm's Napa Valley (Flatter), whose cleverly named dam Mandrell (Dubawi {Ire}) is adaughter of MGISW Country Star (Empire Maker); Jay Em Ess homebred Union Lights (Union Rags), a half-brother to dual Grade I winner By The Moon (Indian Charlie) and GSP Wonderful Light (Tiz Wonderful); and $420,000 KEESEP grad Major General (Constitution). Another 'Mischief'ous Colt Down to Debut…

7th-SAR, $100,000, Msw, 2yo, 6 1/2f, post time: 3:55 p.m. ET
The second division of the maiden lacks perhaps some of the depth of the first, but MY PRANKSTER (Into Mischief) will be well-backed to open his account at first asking. Purchased by Robert and Lawana Low for $600,000 at Fasig-Tipton last September, the bay is the second to the races for his dam My Wandy's Girl (Flower Alley), a champion in Puerto Rico who won was third in the GI Gazelle S. once repatriated and added the GII Barbara Fritchie H. the following season. My Wandy's Girl is a half to the dam of MSW/MGSP Sagauro Row (Union Rags). Triumphant Road (Quality Road) is out of California MGSW turf distaffer Foxysox (GB) (Foxhound), the dam of MSW Curlin's Fox (Curlin). A $310,000 short yearling at KEEJAN in 2020, the dark bay fetched $475,000 at OBS March after breezing in :10 1/5. Reserve Currency (American Freedom) cost $40,000 at FTKSEL last year, but was hammered down to Klaravich Stables for $375,000 at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic in May (breeze), the second most-expensive of 38 of his sire's first-crop juveniles reported as sold this year. Best Looking For Some Headline News at Ellis…

5th-ELP, $51K, Msw, 2yo, 6f, post time: 3:42 p.m. ET
PAGE ONE (Practical Joke) cost Larry Best's OXO Equine $260,000 at KEENOV in 2019, a price which ranks as the second-priciest among the 35 of his sire (by Into Mischief)'s first-crop weanlings sold that year. The Elm Tree Farm-bred colt is out of the stakes-placed Bailzee (Grand Slam) and is a half-brother to the promising Witsel (Nyquist), a debut winner by 13 1/4 lengths over the winter at Tampa and narrow runner-up to 'TDN Rising Star' Beau Liam (Liam's Map) in a stakes-quality first-level allowance at Saratoga July 17. Baffert Debuts Well-Bred Quality Road Pair…

4th-DMR, $70K, Msw, 2yo, 5 1/2f, post time: 6:34 p.m. ET
RHETORIC, a $600,000 KEESEP acquisition, makes his first trip to the races for SF Racing, Starlight Racing and Madaket Stables et al, and is the first produce to race from Hard Not To Like (Hard Spun), winner of the grassy GI Diana S. at Saratoga and the GI Gamely S. on this circuit, who twice realized seven-figure prices when offered at KEENOV–$1.5 million in 2014 and $2.2 million the following year. Hard Not To Like is a half-sister to Credit River (More Than Ready), who belied odds of 41-1 to break his maiden at first asking in the Ontario Racing S. at Woodbine last September. Baoma Corp. paid $400,000 for Kamui at KEENOV in 2019 and attempted to pinhook the colt at KEESEP the following year, only to take him home when bidding stalled out at $875,000. The bay is out of a half-sister to MGSW Tequilita (Union Rags) and hails from the female family of Offlee Wild and Dynaformer. TJCIS PPs

Prize Money Boost for French 2yo Races in 2021

Following a board meeting on Monday, Oct. 12, a stimulus package with the goal of boosting the number of juveniles in training was approved by France Galop. This stimulus package is aimed primarily at reversing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on French racing and to support owners and breeders who wish to invest in France in the future. The main decisions decided upon by the France Galop board are as follows:

  • Increase the owners’ premiums for French-bred 2-year-olds from 60% to 70% in 2021, and for French-bred 3-year-olds in 2022.
  • Add 25 new maiden races for 2-year-olds in 2021.
  • A new programme for 2-year-old maidens, sired by stallions based in France or abroad, whose covering fee did not exceed €10,000 at the time of conception.
  • Waiving of training centre fees for yearlings and 2-year-olds until the month of March.
  • Work started earlier this month on a one-mile long, 15-foot wide woodchip uphill track at the Chantilly training centre, which will be finished in the spring of 2021.

Currently, the French juvenile programme contains 557 races, of which two-thirds are either maiden, unraced or early conditions races (Class 2), which collectively carry prize money of €15.4 million. For more information on these decisions, please visit www.france-galop.com.
