Adam Rice Wins A Double At Saratoga

When Adam Rice comes to Saratoga he means business.

The 32-year-old trainer and nephew of Linda Rice picked up a pair of Saratoga winners Sunday when he won the day's second race with Pennsylvania-bred Dancing Spirit (Social Inclusion). The race was for 2-year-old maiden fillies and it was run at a mile-and-a-sixteenth on the grass. It was the second career start for the 2-year-old filly, who finished second in her debut on the Tapeta surface at Presque Isle Downs.

For the 32-year-old trainer, who started his first horse in Saratoga in 2015, it was his sixth winner from his first nine starts at Saratoga. Later on the card, he sent out Closethegame Sugar (Girvin), who won the Mahony S. at odds of 19-1.

“I want to attest it to fact we train on a synthetic track at Presque Isle,” Rice said. “It allows these horses to stay comfortable on a springy, light surface. I think their energy level stays high. I think the dirt can drag them down a little bit. Conditioning-wise it sets them up to stay fresh and happy. That surface allows us to get these horses fit and dialed in. I think I have proven to myself that I have a good idea of what is required to get it done and I like to think I do a good job preparing these babies for a race.”

Normally, Rice shows up with inexpensive horses or horses that don't exactly jump off the page when it comes to pedigrees. He is also the owner of Dancing Spirit and bought her privately from breeder Glenn Brok when she was a weanling. Rice said Dancing Spirit was part of a five-horse package and that Brok was looking to get out of the business.

“It was when she was a weanling. I showed up at the farm five hours after he called me and looked at all five of them,” Rice said. “I got my eyes on them and bought them. I had some cash in my pocket and this opportunity came along. Why not? You can't make any money if you don't have any horses.”

Ridden by Jose Ortiz and sent off at 8-1, Dancing Spirit enjoyed a good trip. She was third early before grabbing the lead near the top of the stretch. She opened up by two lengths with a furlong to go and had enough left to hold off runner-up Sea Dancer (Mastery). The winning time was 1:45.03.

The Chad Brown first-time starter Nikitis (Audible) was bet down to 115-100 favoritism. She finished fifth and had no obvious excuses.

Rice is known for selling off his young horses, particularly after they've had a win like the one picked up Sunday by Dancing Spirit. This one is no exception.

“Everything in the barn is for sale as long as the price is right,” Rice said.

DANCING SPIRIT (f, 2, Social Inclusion–Dancing Sparks, by Jump Start) debuted over the synthetic track at Presque Isle Downs July 17 and ran a respectable second when sprinting the five furlongs. Ambitiously spotted in this stretch out on the turf facing tougher company, the 8-1 shot was prominently placed throughout while tracking Dr. Ray D. (Constitution). Maneuvered down to save ground against the fence by jockey Jose Ortiz, Dancing Spirit stayed as long as she could before tipping back out swing three wide off the turn. Engaged with late leader Out too Late (GB) (Expert Eye {GB}), the Pennsylvania-bred filly dug in gamely as she turned back that rival and held off Sea Dancer (Mastery) to prevail by a half-length. Forte And Tapit Trice Breeze Together Towards Travers; Nest To Personal Ensign

Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's Forte (Violence) and Whisper Hill Farm and Gainesway Stable's Tapit Trice (Tapit), both 'TDN Rising Stars', worked in company over the main track Thursday in preparation for the GI Travers S. August 26 at Saratoga.

Forte, with regular pilot Irad Ortiz, Jr. up, worked without blinkers to the outside of Tapit Trice, who was guided through the half-mile breeze by exercise rider Fernando Rivera. Both workmates stopped the clock in :48.33.

“I thought both horses worked extremely well–both were moving really well and good gallop outs,” said Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher. “They came back and cooled out quickly. We got what we were hoping for.”

It was the first breeze back for both horses after Forte's narrow score in the GII Jim Dandy S. July 29 at the Spa and Tapit Trice's fifth-place effort in the GI Haskell S. July 22 at Monmouth Park.

Pletcher said he would like to see Tapit Trice be more involved early in his races.

“He reacts well to the doors opening, but he just doesn't get away from the gate real quickly and I think that's compromised his chances in a couple of races,” Pletcher said.

 

With Luis Saez committed to ride Kentucky Derby winner Mage (Good Magic) in the Travers, Pletcher said it is likely either Jose Ortiz or Flavien Prat would pick up the mount aboard Tapit Trice.

Meanwhile, Repole Stable, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Michael House's reigning Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Nest (Curlin) worked a half-mile in :49.44 in company with sophomore maiden filly Sister Maha (American Pharoah).

“I thought she was impressive. I had her coming home in 23 and a couple and just galloped out really strongly,” said Pletcher of the work.

Nest made a triumphant return from an eight-month layoff to best MGISW Clairiere (Curlin) in the GII Shuvee S. July 23 at the Spa.

“She seems to thrive on racing,” Pletcher said. “I was little concerned running her a mile and an eighth off the layoff from the Breeders' Cup and it seems like the race moved her forward. Everything does seem to come easily to her and I'm amazed the way she maintains her fitness and comes out of her races,” Pletcher continued. “We noticed it last year in the Belmont. It was a concern running a filly against colts at a mile and a half and is there some risk it could knock her out a little bit, but it did just the opposite. It moved her forward.”

Nest is targeting the GI Personal Ensign S. August 25 at Saratoga Race Course.

Pletcher said Harrel Ventures and Starlight Racing's maiden winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Pirate (Omaha Beach), who earned a 77 Beyer for his debut win July 15, will train up to the GI Hopeful S. Sept. 4 at the Spa.

“I don't know that he needed more time, but I felt with the Grade I status of the Hopeful that we'd be taking our best shot at it by not running in between the maiden race and there,” Pletcher said.

Also targeting the Personal Ensign is Rigney Racing's GISW Played Hard (Into Mischief), who scratched from the Shuevee with a fever days before the race. She logged a five-furlong breeze in 1:00.05 in company with the stakes-placed 4-year-old gelding Warrior Johny [1:01.14] over the Saratoga main track Thursday.

“When I'm looking for a strong work, I like to give a horse a target,” said trainer Phil Bauer. “We knew the horse in front of her is a quality individual, so we were going to get the work we wanted.”

Explainer: Mr. Jeffrey Englehart as responsible trainer under 9 NYCRR , 4043.4 (a) , violated Commission rules in that Mr. Jeffrey Englehart trained horse ” Victory Built” , that finished 2nd in the 2nd race at Aqueduct racetrack on March 11th 2023, and having received a report from the New York State Drug Testing and Research Program that a race-day blood sample taken from horse “Victory Built” had the substance Phenlybutazone present at a concentration, including an assement of the measurement uncertainty and imprecision of the quantitative threshold, in excess of 0.3 mcg/ml in plasma in violation of 9 NYCRR 4043.3 (a) (26). Having waived your right to an appeal trainer Mr. Jeffrey Englehart is hereby suspended 14 Calendar days August 3rd 2023 through August 16th 2023 inclusive and fined the sum of two thousand ($2,000) dollars.

Both Ortiz Brothers Get Days At Spa For ‘Careless Riding’

Brothers Irad Ortiz Jr., and Jose Ortiz will both serve three-day “careless riding” suspensions Aug. 9-11 that were imposed by the Saratoga Race Course stewards for separate infractions that involved winning rides last week. Both jockeys elected not to appeal their penalties.

Irad Ortiz crossed the wire first but got disqualified aboard 1.45-1 favorite Eyes On Target (Exaggerator) in the seventh race July 27, a $25,000 claiming turf route.

The Equibase chart stated that in upper stretch, his mount “was under a light drive in behind the top pair just off the inside, had the rider look to the outside, tipped out into a space three to four paths off the rail forcing Tartini (Giant's Causeway) to check between to pinching foes and Tommy Bee (Medaglia d'Oro) who was attempting to angle in to the seam from the outside to pause and steady in behind and to the outside of Tartini…”

Eyes On Target then rallied and was just up in the final few jumps to prevail.

Tartini's jockey, Dylan Davis, claimed foul after finishing eighth. The stewards demoted Eyes on Target and placed Ortiz's mount behind that fouled rival. Tommy Bee crossed the wire fifth.

Jose Ortiz won the tenth race July 26, a $40,000 maiden-claiming turf route, aboard the 5-1 Indian Mischief (Into Mischief).

The Equibase chart stated that after making the lead and straightening away in the stretch, Indian Mischief “came under a left handed crop and drifted out two paths directly in front and impeding He's a Lucky Guy [Street Boss] forcing that foe to check just off his heels sharp enough to displace large chunks of the sod in a halt while brushing that foe with his hindquarters…” before inching away to victory.

After a stewards' inquiry, the results stood.
