City Man Punches Pegasus Turf Ticket in Ft. Lauderdale

Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Peter and Patty Searles' City Man (Mucho Macho Man) was the recipient of a cool-headed ride from Joel Rosario and kicked smartly at the fence to take out Saturday's GII Fort Lauderdale S., earning a spot in the field for the GI Pegasus World Cup Turf in a month's time.

And he's done it the old-fashioned way–he's earned it.

The second betting favorite as the public went head over heels for the comebacking two-time Pegasus hero Colonel Liam (Liam's Map), City Man bounced well from gate six and was asked for a bit of speed to get a foothold at the fence in third, as longshots Winfromwithin (Into Mischief) and Decorated Invader (Declaration of War) showed the most early interest. Colonel Liam, marooned in the 11 hole and having his first run since finishing down the field in the G1 Dubai Turf last March, got all the way down into the two path to be a forward factor as well.

Holding his spot at the fence turning up the backstretch, City Man was in the box seat from third, while Colonel Liam was taken out three wide, with a clear shot at the leaders as they reached the midpoint of the second turn. Ridden with the whip three wide at the three-sixteenths, Colonel Liam got to within a length of the now-scrimmaging pacesetters, but had run his race soon after. Ridden for a bit of luck by Rosario, City Man was shifted down to the rail to take advantage of the opening left by a drifting Winfromwithin, felt a right-handed crack of the crop when striking to the lead about a furlong down and kept on gamely for the victory. Street Ready (More Than Ready) won a photo for third ahead of the dead-heating Winfromwithin and 65-1 Good Governance (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who ran a sneaky race while covering stacks of extra ground. Colonel Liam tired to sixth.

“The idea was to be forward with him,” winning trainer Christophe Clement confirmed. “I told [jockey Joel Rosario] not to fight him and be comfortable, and he won well. It's a nice race, a prep for the Pegasus. That would be the plan. He's a New York-bred, so I gave him a break [in the winter] in the past. But this year, I just thought we had never run in the Pegasus and I told Mr. Reeves, 'Why don't you try to run in the Pegasus?' It's a beautiful turf course, well done by Gulfstream. They got it right. All the jockeys have been very positive about it, and I'm delighted.”

Trainer Todd Pletcher indicated that the Pegasus remains in the plans for the beaten favorite.

“I thought he worked out a pretty good trip from the wide post,” the conditioner said. “He got to the position we wanted. They were really running along quickly. [Jockey] Irad [Ortiz Jr.] said he flattened out on him a little in the middle of the far turn. It's been a while since he's run and hopefully, he needed the race. He seemed to jog back great and looked great. We'll train as though he'll run in the Pegasus Turf unless he tells me not to.”

Better than ever at the age of five, City Man caused a 12-1 upset in Saratoga's GIII Forbidden Apple S. in July, his first at the graded level and was a good second in the GIII Bernard Baruch H. in September. Much to the chagrin of his competition, the 5-year-old returned to state-bred restricted company for his two most recent appearances at Aqueduct, resulting in wins in the Sept. 24 Ashley T. Cole S. and the Mohawk S. Oct. 30.

City Man is one of three graded winners for Mucho Macho Man, whose two Grade I winners include 2020 GI Pegasus World Cup romper Mucho Gusto. City Scamper, a winning half-sister to New York-bred stakes winner Alwaysinstilletos (Bandini), produced a colt by Hoppertunity in 2020, a full-sister to City Man in 2021 already named Miss City Girl and a Vino Rosso filly in 2022.

Proxy Gives Godolphin Second Straight Win In Clark

Making his first start since running a career-best 104 Beyer Speed Figure when third to future GI Breeders' Cup Classic runner-up Olympiad (Speightstown) in the GII Stephen Foster S. at Churchill Downs this past July, Proxy (Tapit–Panty Raid, by Include) got just the better of a final-furlong throwdown with favored West Will Power (Bernardini) to take out Friday's GI Clark S. beneath the Twin Spires. The win was a second straight in the race for Godolphin following Maxfield (Street Sense) last fall.

Given a positive ride from gate one by Joel Rosario in this fresh-up run, the homebred 4-year-old–off as the 5-2 third choice–somewhat surprisingly raced closest in attendance to the last-out GII Fayette S. winner passing under the wire for the first time and remained glued inside into the first turn before popping out into the two path passing the seven-furlong marker. West Will Power was the controlling speed through fractions of :23.94 and :48.51, but Proxy remained his shadow into the second bend and was asked to come after the front-runner in earnest fully three furlongs from home. Proxy drifted wide off the final corner and still had the pacesetter–who was not lying down–to catch entering the final eighth of a mile. But, shoulder to shoulder with the West runner with time ticking away, Proxy knuckled down to hit the front late and edged clear. Fulsome (Into Mischief) came on late to be third.

“This was his first start in a few months, so he was a little sharper leaving the gate,” said Rosario, winning his second Clark in four years (Tom's d'Etat, 2019). “He was a little bit further back in his last start here in the Stephen Foster than I expected him to be. I knew [West Will Power] was really the only horse that had early speed in the race so I didn't want to let him get away easily. He was very professional today throughout. [West Will Power] didn't want to give in. He was very tough on the lead and I had to work pretty hard to get by him.”

GI Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (Keen Ice) raced inside and at the tail through the opening exchanges and gradually improved his position down the backstretch. But he came under heavy Sonny Leon urging three furlongs out and trailed in sixth.

“He was in a good position at the rail but turning for home he didn't have anything left at all,” said trainer Eric Reed. “We knew it was a big risk running him back in three weeks. Sometimes you're the hero and sometimes you're the goat.”

Proxy made a bit of noise on the 2021 Triple Crown trail, finishing runner-up to the late Midnight Bourbon (Tiznow) in the GIII Lecomte S. and to adjudicated GI Kentucky Derby hero Mandaloun (Into Mischief) in the GII Risen Star S., but the bay was only fourth in the GII Louisiana Derby and again in the GIII Lexington S. before connections called time on a Classics program and his season. Proxy ran with credit once returned to action this spring, rounding out the exacta underneath Olympiad in the GII New Orleans Classic S. ahead of a third in Keeneland's GIII Ben Ali S. He closed well to be second in the June 4 Blame S. ahead of his Stephen Foster effort, where he was five lengths adrift at the wire.

Pedigree Notes:

With the victory, Proxy becomes the 30th Grade I winner, 98th graded winner and 157th black-type winner for Tapit and was the second new graded winner on the afternoon out of a daughter of the late Include, joining GIII Comely S. heroine Sixtythreecaliber.

Panty Raid, a $260,000 purchase by Glencrest Farm out of the 2006 Keeneland April Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, was one of the more versatile performers of her generation, winning the GII Black-Eyed Susan S. on conventional dirt in May 2007 and the GI American Oaks on turf two months later before doubling her Grade I tally in that year's Juddmonte Spinster S. over the Keeneland all-weather.

Panty Raid was purchased by John Ferguson on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed's operation for $2.5 million at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, but took some time to make her mark in the breeding shed. Her first foal of note was Proxy's year-older half-sister Micheline, a Grade II winner on turf and second in the GI QE II Challenge Cup at Keeneland. Panty Raid, whose full-sister St. John's River went excruciatingly close in the 2011 GI Kentucky Oaks, foaled a Frosted colt in 2021, a filly by Into Mischief this past May and was among the first book of mares bred to Tapit's two-time Eclipse Award winner Essential Quality.

Epicenter Highlights Busy Asmussen Worktab; Rich Strike Classic-Bound

Champion Echo Zulu (Gun Runner) and probable champion Epicenter (Not This Time) topped a busy worktab for Steve Asmussen's potential Breeders' Cup starters Sunday morning at Keeneland as the racing world draws closer than two weeks away from the 39th World Championships in Lexington Nov. 4-5.

With exercise rider Wilson Fabian aboard, Echo Zulu drilled five furlongs in :59 2/5 in company with Marsalis (Curlin). The move was the fastest five-eighths of 30 Sunday over the fast main track. Echo Zulu, who returned off a layoff to win the GIII Dogwood S. last out, is being pointed to the $1-million GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

Next was Peter Blum Thoroughbreds' Society (Gun Runner). With jockey Florent Geroux aboard, Society worked 5 furlongs in :59 4/5 in company. A winner of five of six starts, including the GI Cotillion S. in her most recent outing, Society is being pointed to the $2-million GI Breeders' Cup Distaff. Also working before 6 a.m. was Stonestreet Stables' Clairiere (Curlin), who breezed 5 furlongs in 1:00 4/5 with Joel Rosario aboard in company. Clairiere, like Society, is being pointed to the Distaff.

Following the first track renovation break that ended at 7:30, Winchell Thoroughbreds' GI Breeders' Cup Classic hopeful Epicenter worked five furlongs in 1:00 1/5 with Rosario up in company.

“He's a nice horse and I am just glad to be on him,” Rosario, who has ridden Epicenter in his past seven races, said. “He's more mature and looks like he has grown and is stronger. He finished up good; training really good.”

This was the fourth local work for Epicenter, who has compiled four wins and three seconds in 2022 highlighted by a victory in the GI Runhappy Travers S. in his most recent start.

“This morning was more of the same,” owner Ron Winchell said. “He did what he needed to do.”

Winchell picked up two more possible Breeders' Cup hopefuls Saturday at Keeneland when homebreds Wicked Halo (Gun Runner) won the GII Lexus Raven Run S. and Gunite (Gun Runner) took the Perryville S. Wicked Halo could go to the Filly and Mare Sprint and Gunite to the $2-million GI Qatar Racing Breeders' Cup Sprint.

On the West Coast, likely prohibitive GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile favorite Cave Rock (Arrogate) worked six furlongs in 1:11 1/5 (1/5) at Santa Anita in company for trainer Bob Baffert. The undefeated colt was last seen dominating the GI American Pharoah S.

In other Breeders' Cup news, the connections of GI Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (Keen Ice) announced that the over-achieving chestnut will be pointed to the Classic over a potential start in the GI Clark H. Nov. 25 at Churchill.”Rich Strike is doing as good as he ever has, and [owner] Rick [Dawson] feels that he deserves the chance to take on the best in the world,” trainer Eric Reed said.

Reed planned to bring Rich Strike to Keeneland from his base at the Mercury Equine Center Sunday afternoon with the colt scheduled to gallop Monday morning before moving Monday afternoon to the barns on Rice Road that will serve as the home to all Breeders' Cup runners. Rich Strike is expected to work Tuesday morning.
