Tom Marquand Benched After Shoulder Surgery

Jockey Tom Marquand, who sustained a concussion after parting ways with his mount in Australia on Saturday, underwent shoulder surgery as a result of the incident, as well on Wednesday.

Marquand was forceably removed from his mount in the A$2-million Inglis Millennium due to interference from another rider, and was originally diagnosed with just a concussion. Subsequent MRI scans revealed a dislocated sternoclavicular joint.

“It has basically dislocated backwards, so I have to go for an operation today [Wednesday] to get it wired back in,” Marquand said in a video posted to Instagram.

“I will probably spend a week here now in Australia just because I can't fly straight after having an operation.

“Then the plan will be to come back to England and go through my rehab there and hope that I can get back in action by the time the last couple of days of The Championships are on and all being well, head back down to Sydney.”

Marquand's wife, fellow jockey Hollie Doyle, is also on the sidelines after dislocating her elbow last month, and she is set to have surgery next week.

He added, “Hollie is having a bit of a shocker as well, off with her elbow and she is going under the knife I think early next week.

“We will be in rehab and recuperation together and be a right pair so at least we've got two arms between us. It's obviously not ideal what's going on, but I think we can both count ourselves pretty lucky in the circumstances.”

McDonald Named Longines World’s Best Jockey

New Zealand-born, but Australian-based jockey James McDonald easily outdistanced Ryan Moore to be named the Longines World's Best Jockey for 2022. McDonald will be honoured at a ceremony during the gala dinner for the Longines Hong Kong International Races Friday, Dec. 9, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The awarding of the Longines World's Best Jockey title is based upon performances in the 100 highest-rated Group 1 and Grade 1 races as established for the year by the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings Committee. The scoring incorporates races from Dec. 1 of the previous year until Nov. 30 of the current year. Jockeys accrue 12 points for a win, 6 points for placing second, and 4 points for placing third.

McDonald, who finished third in the 2021 competition, won nine of the world's top 100 Group 1/Grade I races during the season, topped by the G1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate aboard Godolphin's Anamoe (Aus) (Street Boss) and the G1 T J Smith S. astride Nature Strip (Aus) (Nicconi {Aus}). McDonald also guided the latter to a thrilling victory in the G1 King's Stand S. at Royal Ascot. He is the second Australian-based rider to win the title, following Hugh Bowman in 2017.

Horseshoe Indianapolis Jockeys Collect Toys for Charity

In its eighth year, the jockeys at Horseshoe Indianapolis collected 70 toys that will be donated to the Shelby County CASA (Court Appointed State Advocates) for kids displaced in current home situations. “This toy drive is a great thing we do because we are helping a lot of kids who don't have the opportunity to enjoy Christmas every year,” said DeShawn Parker, winner of more than 6,000 career races. “It makes all of us feel good to do something as a group to help out each year.”

In addition to the annual toy drive, throughout the year the jockeys also raise funds for PDJF (Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund) and for HVAF (Hoosier Veterans and Families) Inc. of Indiana. “It's nice to help and I want to help out whenever I can,” added Marcelino Pedroza, Jr., who is a three-time leading jockey at Horseshoe Indianapolis. “Giving back is important to me. It's the way I was raised, and I want to help any way I can. I hope we can brighten the day of a few kids this Christmas.”
