‘She Kept Fighting All The Way’: Indian Pride Proves Best In Shine Again

Brereton C. Jones' homebred Indian Pride ensured trainer Chad Brown swept Friday's stakes double, fending off Blamed in deep stretch to register a half-length victory in the $85,000 Shine Again for older fillies and mares on Friday at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Indian Pride's third victory in four career starts gave Brown his third consecutive win on the card, which started when he conditioned Viadera and Noor Sahara to a 1-2 finish in the $85,000 De La Rose.

Following Lady Lawyer's allowance win in Race 8, Saratoga's reigning two-time leading trainer completed the natural hat trick in the Shine Again. Indian Pride broke alertly under Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano, leading the nine-horse field through the opening quarter-mile in 23.13 seconds and the half in 46.06 on the main track rated fast.

Entering the turn, Joy Epifora briefly took command in front of Indian Pride, though Castellano encouraged his charge and quickly regained the advantage staying near the rail. But Blamed, the multiple graded stakes-winner trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, surged from her outside in the final furlong. The duo linked up and ran eye-to-eye in the final sixteenth before Indian Pride pulled away to complete the seven-furlong sprint in a 1:21.63 final time, capturing her first career stake.

“It was a really good ride the way he stayed off the fence a bit and avoided getting hooked by the other speed and just let her do her thing out in the center of the track,” Brown said. “That was our plan in the paddock and Javier executed it. And what about the filly – the heart she showed? Most horses would give up and I think we really should give all credit to her.”

Off as the 2-1 favorite, Indian Pride returned $6 on a $2 win bet. The 4-year-old Proud Citizen filly improved her career bankroll to $157,550, returning to the site where she broke her maiden by eight lengths last August. Her only non-win came with a third-place finish in the Grade 2 Raven Run to cap her sophomore campaign in October at Keeneland.

“She showed what she's made of today. I was really proud of her effort,” Brown said. “She's always been a horse that had immense talent. When she broke her maiden here last summer it was breathtaking really, arguably the most impressive win we had last year. She's had some bumps and bruises along the way in terms of the interrupted schedule, but now she has two straight races under her belt and I hope to have her for the whole season.”

Castellano improved to 3-for-3 riding Indian Pride.

“She's an unbelievable filly. I have to give all the credit to Mr. Brown. He put a lot of time and patience into her and it has really paid off,” Castellano said. “You can see the development with the horse. Last time it was six and a half furlongs at Belmont, now she's stretching out to seven furlongs.

“I really like the way she fought for me today,” he continued. “She dictated the pace and then there was pressure to the inside and when Blamed went after her in the stretch and buried her a little bit into the rail, she never gave up. She kept fighting all the way to the end to win the race. She showed me a lot of class and a lot of heart, too.”

Cleber J. Massey's Blamed, the winner of the 2018 Grade 3 Comely at Aqueduct Racetrack and the 2019 Grade 3 Royal Delta at Gulfstream Park, was making her first start since running fourth in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps on June 13 at Belmont Park. She bested Risky Mandate by three lengths for second.

“My filly ran a big race. I had a good trip and no excuses,” said Blamed jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. “You're going to hear a lot from her this year.”

Joy Epifora, Honor Way, Positive Spirit, Bella Ciao, Please Flatter Me and Slimey completed the order of finish. Estilo Femenino was scratched.

Live racing resumes Saturday with an 11-race card highlighted by the Grade 1, $350,000 Coaching Club American Oaks for sophomore fillies in Race 10 at 6:16 p.m. Eastern. The 1 1/8-mile test will offer 100-40-20-10 points to the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks in September at Churchill Downs. Saturday will also showcase the Grade 2, $150,000 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame for 3-year-olds over the inner turf in Race 3 at 2:18 p.m. First post is 1:10 p.m.

With Jenny Wiley Victory, Rushing Fall Now A Grade 1 Winner At 2, 3, 4 And 5

E Five Thoroughbreds' Rushing Fall collared pacesetting Jolie Olimpica (BRZ) at the eighth pole and then drew clear to win the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley by three-quarters of a length at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

Trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Javier Castellano, Rushing Fall covered the 1 1/16 miles on a firm turf course in a course-record 1:39.02.

Jolie Olimpica set the pace with fractions of :23.42, :46.94 and 1:10.10 with Rushing Fall in closest pursuit. Rushing Fall began closing the gap on the far turn but was unable to draw on even terms until midstretch where she began to slowly inch away.

Rushing Fall's fifth Grade 1 victory was worth $210,000 and increased her earnings to $2,278,000 with a record of 13-10-2-0.

The 5-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of More Than Ready out of the Forestry mare Autumnal notched her fifth Keeneland stakes victory, a total that trails only the record seven owned by Wise Dan.

Rushing Fall won the  Jessamine (G3) in 2017, the Appalachian (G2)  and Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1) in 2018 and the Jenny Wiley (G1) in 2019. She joins Intercontinental (GB) in 2004-2005 as the only repeat Jenny Wiley winner.

She becomes the third horse since 1976 to win Grade 1 stakes as age 2, 3, 4 and 5 joining Lady Eli and Beholder.

Rushing Fall returned $3.60, $2.60 and $2.10. Jolie Olimpica, ridden by Mike Smith, returned $5.20 and $3.60 with Juliet Foxtrot (GB) finishing third another half-length back under Tyler Gaffalione and paying $3.20 to show.

It was another 1¼ lengths back to Altea (FR) and Toinette, who dead-heated for fourth with Secret Message, La Signare (FR) and Mucho Unusual completing the field in order.

Jenny Wiley Quotes
Bob Edwards, whose e Five Racing Thoroughbreds owns Rushing Fall: “She's tenacious and once she got a nose ahead, she wasn't letting up. She was going to bury her.”

On Rushing Fall winning Grade 1 races each year from ages 2-5: “It's a dream come true. Everyone wishes for a horse like this. I hope I get another one in my racing career like her. This is just phenomenal. We're all sitting around watching it at the house. I'm still shaking. The adrenaline spike is still there even when you're watching from your couch. And not a terrible day for Chad (Brown).”

Javier Castellano: “She's the type of horse that she doesn't have to be on the lead. Today it worked out great. I could keep track of the front runners. The way she did it is amazing. She's a really nice filly.”

Rushing Fall Shatters Course Record in Jenny Wiley Repeat

Already a Grade I winner at ages two, three and four, ‘TDN Rising Star’ Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) made it four straight seasons at the highest level with a record-setting victory in the GI Coolmore Jenny Wiley S. at Keeneland Saturday, which she also won last season. Away in good order, the 4-5 chalk was hot on pacesetting Jolie Olimpica (Brz)’s (Drosselmeyer) tail in second with Juliet Foxtrot (GB) (Dansili {GB}) to her inside through upbeat fractions of :23.42 and :46.94. Ranging up to look Jolie Olimpica in the eye turning for home, Rushing Fall engaged in a brief battle with her foe, but shut the door on her by mid-stretch and drew clear to win by 3/4 of a length. Her final time of 1:39.02 shattered the previous course record for a mile of 1:40.30 set by Quiet Resolve (Affirmed) in 2000.

“It’s a dream come true,” said owner Bob Edwards of e Five Racing. “Everyone wishes for a horse like this. I hope I get another one in my racing career like her. This is just phenomenal. We’re all sitting around watching it at the house…I’m still shaking. The adrenaline spike is still there even when you’re watching from your couch. And not a terrible day for Chad [Brown]!”

Kicking off her 2019 season with a victory in this race, Rushing Fall followed suit with a win in Belmont’s GI Just a Game S. last June and was second to her champion stablemate Sistercharlie (Myboycharlie {Ire}) in Saratoga’s GI Diana S. Closing out last term with a fourth to another champion barnmate in Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) in this venue’s GI First Lady S. in October, the bay opened this term with a wire-to-wire victory in Belmont’s GIII Beaugay S. June 3.

Pedigree Notes:

Rushing Fall’s female family has dabbled in the spotlight for many years, long before her dam, Autumnal, produced the five-time Grade I winner and 2014 SW & three-time GSP Milam (Street Sense). Autumnal’s dam, Marie J, made headlines in 1997 when she sold for $1 million as a 2-year-old in training at that year’s Barretts March sale and then was named after the “Marie” half of prominent owners Aaron and Marie Jones, who bred Autumnal. The latter was sold as a 2004 Keeneland September yearling for $550,000. Rushing Fall is the brightest light in the most recent branches of the family, although Marie J’s half-sister did produce GISW Albert the Great (Go for Gin). Autumnal has had only two foals since Rushing Fall was born in 2015, including a full-brother to the Jenny Wiley winner born this year. Rushing Fall is one of 202 black-type winners–91 graded–for dual hemisphere super sire More Than Ready.

Speech Loud and Clear in Ashland

Speech (Mr Speaker) became her young sire’s first Grade I winner and earned enough points to land her a spot in the Sept. 4 GI Kentucky Oaks with a decisive score in the GI Central Bank Ashland S. at Keeneland Saturday afternoon. Speedy GII Las Virgenes S. romper Venetian Harbor (Munnings) shot out to the early lead, loping through an opening quarter in :24.04 with Speech stalking from second off the fence. Envoutante (Uncle Mo) slipped up the fence inside of Speech as the half went up in :47.14, but backed out of it on the backstretch as Speech ranged up threateningly on the pacesetter’s outside. Speech overtook Venetian Harbor in early stretch and punched clear to win by three lengths. Venetian Harbor held second over Envoutante.

“I was very happy,” said winning trainer Mike McCarthy. “Obviously we had our mind set on running in the [GIII] Beaumont S. for the last five weeks or so and the last minute, we kind of called an audible and sometimes these things work out. To come back today and think we would set a track record in a race we weren’t especially pointing to says something about Speech. She trained well, she shows up every time. I call her the ultimate overachiever.”

Graduating at second asking at Los Alamitos in December, Speech was second to ‘TDN Rising Star’ Auberge (Palace) in a Feb. 1 optional claimer at Santa Anita and completed the exacta behind Donna Veloce (Uncle Mo) in the GIII Santa Ysabel S. Mar. 8 in Arcadia. Coming up a neck short of dominant GI Acorn S. victress and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Gamine (Into Mischief) in an Oaklawn optional claimer May 2, the bay filled the place spot again in the GII Santa Anita Oaks last time June 6.

Pedigree Notes:

Speech is the first black-type winner for her young sire Mr Speaker. Breeder Gail Rice purchased the winner’s dam Scribbling Sarah, who was conditioned by her former sister-in-law Linda Rice, for $7,500 at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton February Sale. The 10-year-old mare has since produced an unnamed juvenile colt by Upstart and a 2019 colt by Unified. She was bred back to Midnight Lute, but has no reported foal for 2020.
