Midnight Bourbon, Jackie’s Warrior Work Ahead Of Travers, H. Allen Jerkens

Winchell Thoroughbred's Midnight Bourbon, trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, worked a half-mile in :49.60 Sunday on the Oklahoma training track in preparation for Saturday's $1.25 million Grade 1 Runhappy Travers.

Asmussen said the graded stakes-winning sophomore son of Tiznow has worked well after a troubled trip last out in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational, where he was a close third in mid-stretch before clipping heels and falling, unseating rider Paco Lopez.

“He's a very impressive horse,” Asmussen said. “I think we're obviously very fortunate that he came out of the mishap in the Haskell in good shape and he's training well, per usual.”

Midnight Bourbon, a winner of the Grade 3 Lecomte at Fair Grounds Race Course in his 2021 debut, was second in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico to Rombauer prior to the Haskell.

Asmussen and Winchell finished third twice in the Travers with Pyro [2008] and Gun Runner [2016].

Also breezing on Sunday for Asmussen was five-time graded stakes winning millionaire Jackie's Warrior, who went a half-mile in :48.98 seconds in preparation for the $500,000 Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial on the Runhappy Travers Day undercard.

William and Corrine Heiligbrodt's dual graded stakes winner Yaupon went a half-mile in :50.50 seconds over the Oklahoma training track. The 4-year-old son of Uncle Mo is targeting the $600,000 Grade 1 Forego.

Asmussen was pleased with a solid runner-up finish from Stonestreet Stables' Clairiere in the Grade 1 Alabama. The winner of the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra in February at Fair Grounds closed late under Irad Ortiz, Jr. to finish second, 1 ½ lengths in arrears to Malathaat. Asmussen said no plans have been made for the daughter of Curlin's next start.

“She came out of it in good shape,” Asmussen said. “There's a lot going on between now and what's next for her.”

Saffie Joseph, Jr. Points Mischevious Alex To Forego At Saratoga

Trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. said Cash is King and LC Racing's Mischevious Alex had a good breeze back on Friday in his first timed work since an off-the-board finish in the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt on July 31 at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

The 4-year-old Into Mischief bay worked a half-mile solo in :48.45 on the main track in preparation for a start in the $600,000 Grade 1 Forego at seven furlongs on the main track on Travers Day August 28.

“He's bounced out of the race good. We haven't seen anything to deter us running back in the Forego,” Joseph, Jr. said. “He got the thumps last time pretty bad. Hopefully, that was the reason for his performance.”

A multiple graded stakes winner, Mischevious Alex has won 3-of-5 starts this year, including scores in the Grade 3 Gulfstream Park Sprint at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., in February and the Grade 1 Carter Handicap in April at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.

Joseph Jr. said Friday's breeze have him confidence that Mischevious Alex could return to form in the Forego.

“He went a good half by himself. Hopefully, the real Alex shows up and if he does, he'll have a good chance,” Joseph, Jr. said.

Slam Dunk Racing, Madaket Stables, Wonder Stables, and Michael Nentwig's Drain the Clock, a sophomore son of Maclean's Music, also breezed Friday covering a half-mile in :48.83 on the main track.

Boasting a record of six wins and two seconds from nine starts, Drain the Clock bested Jackie's Warrior by a neck on June 5 at Belmont in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens.

Last out, in the 6 1/2-furlong Grade 2 Amsterdam, Jackie's Warrior turned the tables with a romping 7 1/4-length score over a sloppy and sealed Saratoga main track.

Joseph Jr. said he is hopeful Drain the Clock will one-up his familiar foe in the $500,000 Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial on Travers Day.

“No one was beating Jackie that day. He ran dynamite. Maybe our horse didn't run his best that day but all credit to Jackie,” Joseph, Jr. said. “We have no excuse. We had a good trip. The record is one and one. He's beat us once, we beat him once. We'll try again in the Allen Jerkens.”

John Fanelli, Cash is King, LC Racing, Paul Braverman, and Team Hanley's Ny Traffic, a 4-year-old New York-bred son of Cross Traffic, breezed a half-mile in :48 flat Sunday on the main track.

The talented colt finished second in a trio of graded events last year, including the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby in March at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, La., the Grade 3 Matt Winn in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., and the Grade 1 Haskell at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., in July in which he finished just a nose back of Authentic.

Ny Traffic won his seasonal debut in May at Belmont by 6 3/4-lengths sprinting seven furlongs against fellow state-breds in an optional claimer and followed with a close second in the Grade 3 Salvator Mile in June at Monmouth.

Last out, Ny Traffic faded to fourth in the nine-furlong Grade 3 Monmouth Cup on July 17.

“He went good this morning. It was his first breeze back since Monmouth, I had him in 47 and 4. It was a good work back,” Joseph Jr. said. “There's a possibility he could go in the Forego or the Charles Town Classic.”

Joseph Jr. said Ny Traffic will breeze again next weekend before he decides on cutting back to seven furlongs for the Forego or stretching out to nine furlongs for the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic at Charles Town in Charles Town, W.Va. on August 27.

Overall, Joseph, Jr. said he has been pleased with Ny Traffic's performances this season.

“He won his debut at Belmont and in his second race at Monmouth he ran second but it was a good race,” Joseph, Jr. said. “Last time he disappointed a little bit if you just look at the running lines, but the reality is that he acted up pre-race back at the barn and I think he lost his race there. It wasn't a true run.”

Joseph, Jr. said e Five Racing Thoroughbreds' Gibberish will turn back to nine furlongs for the $120,000 Summer Colony on August 22 at the Spa.

Last out, the 4-year-old daughter of Lea was a game second to Miss Marissa in the 10-furlong Grade 2 Delaware Handicap on July 10.

Undefeated 3-Year-Old Life Is Good, Now In Pletcher’s Barn, Expected To Return In Jerkens

Undefeated sophomore colt Life Is Good, formerly in the barn of embattled trainer Bob Baffert but now conditioned by Todd Pletcher, is expected to make his return to the races in the Grade 1 Allen Jerkens Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 28, reports the Daily Racing Form.

The son of Into Mischief has not raced since March due to injury, when he was sent to his co-owner WinStar Farm to recover. WinStar trainer Destin Heath had the colt in training at Keeneland until mid-July, when he was shipped up to Pletcher' barn in New York. Life Is Good has now breezed twice at Saratoga since his arrival. WinStar's Elliott Walden indicated that the Jerkens will be used a step toward a return to two-turn races later in the year.

Also pointed to the Jerkens are Jackie's Warrior, last weekend's runaway winner of the G2 Amsterdam for trainer Steve Asmussen, as well as Pletcher trainee Following Sea, elevated to second last out in the G1 Haskell.

“That's our current target,” Pletcher told DRF of Life is Good and the Jerkens. “See how the horse continues to train, but you're not going to find any easy spots to come back in, I wouldn't think.”

Jackie’s Warrior Dominant In Amsterdam, Brings Asmussen Closer To Record

After a thunderous deluge delayed the Grade 2 Amsterdam for thirty minutes, soaking the sealed Saratoga surface, Jackie's Warrior showed that the delay and the track were no trouble at all for the son of Maclean's Music. At Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., the 3-year-old's multi-length victory brought Steve Asmussen another win closer to passing Dale Baird and becoming racing's winningest trainer.

A troubled break in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens last time out compromised Jackie's Warrior's chances at the victory on the Belmont Stakes undercard, with Drain the Clock taking that G1 stakes race. The two hooked up again early in the G2 Amsterdam, dueling for the first couple of furlongs out of the gate. As the field of six entered the turn, Jackie's Warrior accelerated, leaving Drain the Clock in his wake, stretching his lead out to five lengths before they hit the stretch.

Jackie's Warrior lengthened his lead in the stretch, easily pulling away from the rest of the field with jockey Joel Rosario chilly in the saddle. Behind him, Crowded Trade looked poised to make a move on the rail, Drain the Clock in the center of the track trying as well, but neither had enough to catch up to the Asmussen trainee. Rosario eased his colt in the last part of the stretch, the margin of victory 7 1/4 lengths. The final time for the 6 1/2-furlong G2 Amsterdam was 1:15.46. Drain the Clock, Crowded Trade, Flash of Mischief, Mister Luigi, and River Dog rounded out the order of finish.

Jackie's Warrior paid $3.00, $2.20, and $2.10. Drain the Clock paid $2.90 and $2.50. Crowded Trade paid $3.00 to show.

Bred in Kentucky by J & J Stables, Jackie's Warrior is by Maclean's Music out of Unicorn Girl, by A. P. Five Hundred. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales, the 3-year-old colt sold for $95,000 to owner J. Kirk Robison at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The G2 Amsterdam brings Jackie's Warrior to a record of 2-1-1 in four starts in 2021, for a lifetime record of six wins in nine starts with career earnings of $1,058,964.
