Nunthorpe, Flying Five On The Radar For Golden Pal After Saratoga Win

After returning victorious in Saratoga's Opening Day Quick Call, trainer Wesley Ward said Golden Pal will take his talents overseas for his next engagement.

A winner of his last three starts, Golden Pal was in command throughout the entire 5 ½-furlong journey for sophomores and was wrapped up by jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the final sixteenth of a mile, garnering a career-best 95 Beyer for the three-length win.

Ward said he plans on shipping Golden Pal back to Keeneland in the next couple of days to prepare for a possible start in either the Group 1 Nunthorpe on Aug. 20 at York in England or the Group 1 Flying Five on Sept. 12 at the Curragh in Ireland. Both races offer the winner an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in November at Del Mar.

“I was planning on going this morning, but he ran such a big effort I'll keep him here for a couple of days,” Ward said. “Right now, when he's this good and you want to try and make him a sire, you have to hook into a Group 1 somewhere.”

Ward said the Nunthorpe might be coming up a little sooner than ideal.

“It's close together, but when you're talking about going over to England and off a layoff, I like to give them some time so I'm not 100 percent certain he'll go to the Nunthorpe,” Ward said. “I would say, looking at his energy and his workouts, that will determine whether it's there or if he'll run in Ireland. I've never run one in Ireland.”

Both the Nunthorpe and the Flying Five are contested at five furlongs, a half-furlong shorter than the Quick Call.

“He's much better going five-eighths,” Ward said.

Golden Pal, owned by Coolmore partners Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, Derrick Smith and Westerberg, was a dazzling 3 ½-length winner of the Skidmore at Saratoga last summer before capturing the Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland. He arrived at the Quick Call off eight months rest.

Golden Pal's next start will not be his first international endeavor. In his second outing, he was second beaten a neck in the Group 2 Norfolk last June at Royal Ascot.

While Golden Pal takes his show on the road, Ten Broeck Farm's five-time stakes winner Kimari will target the Grade 2, $200,000 Honorable Miss on July 28 at Saratoga.

The daughter of Munnings captured the Grade 1 Madison on April 3 at Keeneland last out, defeating graded stakes-winners Estilo Talentoso, Bell's the One and Sconsin.

The 4-year-old bay filly, who has never finished worse than fourth in 10 career starts, seeks a second stakes victory at the Spa. She earned her first stakes triumph when taking the Bolton Landing in August 2019.

Winner for Whitney a Fitting Way to Kick off Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Four days short of two years after her death, Marylou Whitney managed to upstage Thursday's feel-good, season-opener at Saratoga Race Course.

Pretty Birdie (Bird Song), bred and owned by Marylou Whitney Stables, struck just the right emotional note–bridging the past and the present–with her gate-to-wire victory in the 103rd running of the GIII Schuylerville S.

“It's a little bittersweet. I wish she was here,” Whitney's husband John Hendrickson said. “She would love this. Saratoga is open and she's won a race. Things are the way they should be. The only thing missing is her.”

The six-furlong Schuylerville for 2-year-old fillies, a staple on opening day since the 1950s, was trainer Norm Casse's first stakes win at Saratoga.

Opening day at Saratoga has always been a big deal, a festive summer holiday, and the first day after the 2020 season without spectators delivered, as many had predicted: a crowd of 27,760 people. They came to reconnect with old friends, enjoy a very warm summer afternoon where racing has been part of the culture since 1863 and wager on Thoroughbreds. The all-sources handle was $21,935,534 (compared to $19,100,297 12 months ago and $15,754,227 in 2019), including $4,023,700 wagered on track.

Whitney was a hugely influential and beloved figure during her many decades in Saratoga. She was a tireless promoter of racing and the city, staged famous parties and was a major philanthropist.

Following her death at the age of 93, Hendrickson said there was never any question that he would keep her stable operating and maintain its bloodlines. Pretty Bird is inbred to Whitney's champion broodmare, Dear Birdie, three by four. Hendrickson said the Schuylerville was the stable's first stakes win at Saratoga Race Course since Birdstone won the 2004 GI Travers S.

“This where she felt the most alive. I wanted to keep her alive,” Hendrickson said. “This is the way she is alive. She has a win on opening day. It's pretty special.”

Just before the Schuylerville, heavily favored Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) turned a jaw-dropping performance to win the GIII Quick Call S. in hand. It may turn out to be one of the standout performances of the 40-day season, but the Whitney connection made Pretty Birdie the star of the day.

Saratoga's fans certainly did not lose their form during the COVID-19 summer of no-spectator racing. There was a crowd of approximately 100 people outside the gates on Union Avenue at 5:30 a.m., some 90 minutes before they were to open. In short order, the picnic tables and other public spaces in the backyard were claimed. Everyone had to leave when training and the trackside breakfast ended at 10 a.m. When the gates re-opened an hour later, the place filled up and the Saratoga party was on.

In the hour before the first post, traffic was near gridlock conditions around the track, standard for Saratoga on big days.

“It feels like a reunion, because I've run into all these people and everybody hollers, 'Hey, good to see you and where you been?' It's been fun,” trainer Kenny McPeek said. “I've seen a long list of people and familiar faces. It seems like everybody's in good spirits and gives you another level of appreciation of the place.”

Robertino Diodoro's Charlie'sarchangel (Archarcharch) captured the first race of the day under champion jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. Diodoro, who lost the 5-year-old in a claim, also won the first race on opening day in 2018. He acknowledged the stark difference from the 2020 season.

“The whole atmosphere from last year to this year,” he said. “It means a lot to everyone, especially the riders getting more into the game. It's good to see for the whole town.”

Ortiz, the leading rider at the Spa last year, said he relished the return to the pre-pandemic norm of people, noise and energy at the track.

“There's no words for it,” he said. “Last year was very sad; a lot of things happened. I really missed the fans. I feel very excited to get them back. It's great. I'm so happy to be back and we're happy they can be back at the racetrack.”

Trainer Jack Sisterson and jockey Jose Ortiz teamed to win the seventh race with Calumet Farm's homebred Dack Janiel's (Tonalist). Sisterson said he enjoyed the energy on the grounds.

“The first thing I said to Jose when I saw him in the paddock is 'How incredible is it to have fans back here?'” Sisterson said. “It not only is good for business, but it's good for everything worldwide to get back to normal, back to reality. It was tough times for everyone. Thankfully, we all sort of got through it and hopefully there are quite a few things to look forward to.”

Harry Rice has been a jockey valet at the NYRA tracks since the mid-1970s and his experience enabled him to provide some perspective.

“It's been tremendous, just the atmosphere,” Rice said. “The people are so happy to see everybody. It's been a long two years and this place is alive again. It's great. It's one of the best opening days I've ever had and I've been here 46 years.”

“Rice worked the 2020 season and described it as being eerie. He said he started Thursday, with a visit to the backstretch, which was off-limits to him last summer and began re-connecting with people.

“It was just so nice,” Rice said. “It reminds you of why you love Saratoga.”

Belmont Racing Festival Success Nets Jose Ortiz Jockey Of The Week Title

Jose Ortiz won two Grade 1 stakes races and a Grade 2 stakes during Belmont Park's Belmont Stakes Racing Festival, earning Jockey of the Week for June 1 through June 6. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 active riders in the United States as well as retired and permanently disabled jockeys.

While Ortiz was originally scheduled to ride numerous mounts during the three-day Racing Festival, he picked up several more after his brother, Irad, went down in an on-track accident Thursday requiring jockey changes for Friday and Saturday. To everyone's relief, Irad was not seriously injured and is scheduled to return to riding soon. Jose went on to make the most of the mounts he picked up.

On Friday, Ortiz picked up the mount on Firenze Fire for trainer Kelly Breen in the Grade 2 True North at 6-1/2 furlongs. Firenze Fire broke from the rail and engaged Flagstaff for nearly the entire race before prevailing by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:15.52.

“(Irad) said he's a very nice horse and that he was going to break good,” said the replacement Ortiz. “I rode him like he was the best horse and he was the best horse.”

On Saturday, Ortiz was named his brother's replacement on Drain the Clock for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens for 3-year-olds going seven furlongs. Under Ortiz, Drain the Clock broke sharp from post 2 while the favorite, Jackie's Warrior missed the break but was hustled up to take command with Drain the Clock in unrelenting pursuit. Drain the Clock hit the wire in front by a neck. The win was Ortiz's first career Woody Stephens.

“It was a great race, everybody gave their best. I'm just happy we came out with the win and I'm happy filling in for Irad and not messing it up,” said Ortiz.

Later on Saturday, Ortiz picked up Letruska for Fausto Gutierrez in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps for older fillies and mares going 1-1/16 miles on the main track. With Ortiz aboard, Letruska went right to the lead out of the gate, led the other four up the backstretch and opened up to draw off by 2-3/4 lengths in 1:41;25. Ortiz said Letruska would not be denied the lead.

“She was breaking a little slow, but she broke good today. I was able to put her on the lead and make the other horses chase me,” said Ortiz.

Ortiz's weekly statistics were 32-5-5-4 for an in-the-money percentage of 43.7 and total purse earnings of $1,370,764.

For Jockey of the Week honors, Ortiz out-polled Edwin Gonzalez with an in-the-money rate of 62 percent, Flavien Prat with two graded stakes wins, Diego Saenz who was the leading jockey by wins with 10, and Luis Saez who won the Belmont Stakes.

Irad Ortiz, Jr. Transported To Hospital After Belmont Spill

Reigning champion jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. was placed on a flat board and transported to a hospital via ambulance following a spill in Thursday's fifth race at Belmont Park, according to NYRA analyst and former champion jockey Richard Migliore.

Ortiz's mount, Equal Pay, stumbled in the stretch and unseated the rider in the path of oncoming horses.

On the America's Day At The Races broadcast, Migliore said that after the race, both Jose Ortiz and Junior Alvarado “ran back up above the eighth pole to check on his condition and when (Jose) came back he said was he was moving everything, he's talking, did have some cuts and contusions because he was clipped by one of the trailing horses.… his brother seemed relieved that he was talking and moving everything. It's always a huge concern when a rider goes down, particularly when they are in the path of oncoming horses.”

NYRA's public relations man Keith McCalmont Tweeted that Ortiz is “awake and alert, moving all extremities, and will be transported to local hospital for further evaluation.”

Ortiz is named to ride in nine races on Friday and in all 13 races on Saturday's Belmont Stakes card, including Known Agenda for Todd Pletcher in the Belmont.

This story will be updated when more information is available.
