Gun Runner’s Dreamlike Avoids Stretch Problems to Break Maiden

DREAMLIKE (c, 3, Gun Runner–Time to Tap, by Tapit) began his career Feb. 11 in Hallendale, where he finished second in a mile maiden contest and in a 1 1/16-mile Mar. 11 main track race before shipping north Apr. 8 to Aqueduct to try his hand in the GII Wood Memorial S. Third in that Derby-qualifier with a blanket finish separating him from winner GSW Lord Miles (Curlin) and runner-up GSW Hit Show (Candy Ride {Arg}), he was given a brief freshening before being brought back here at America's summer playground.

Crushed at the windows to the tune of 1-5 favoritism on an overcast afternoon, the chestnut broke well enough to save ground on the first bend in fourth. Settling as the leading flight showed the way, he drafted in the two path behind cover along most of the far turn and was rolling from four wide outside of the quarter pole. Rallying to take the lead as rivals to his inside knocked each other around coming into the homeward drive, he extended his advantage to a comfortable 6 3/4 lengths as Moore's Law (Good Magic) motored in from last to take the minor placing. Mount Craig (Arrogate) gamely overcame the interference to round out the trifecta. An inquiry into that stretch trouble would later disqualify fourth place finisher Hero's Medal (Medaglia d'Oro) to sixth.

Dreamlike claims Australian export MSP Backflash (Medaglia d'Oro) as an elder sister. He's the third winner from three to race and has two full-siblings–a 2-year-old colt Dimatic and a yearling filly. Dam Time to Tap, herself a full to champion 3-year-old filly, GI Kentucky Oaks victress Untapable, had a 2023 Silver State colt. Among her other accomplished siblings hails GISW & MGISP Paddy O'Prado (El Prado {Ire}), and the dams of GSW Majestic Eagle (Medaglia d'Oro) and GISP Red Route One (Gun Runner). Jose Ortiz And Linda Rice Top Belmont Spring/Summer Standings

After a close battle with his brother through the final days of the 40-day spring/summer meet at Belmont Park, jockey Jose Ortiz secured the leading riding title on Sunday at the Belmont oval, finishing the meet just one win ahead with 59 total victories.

Ortiz celebrated his 12th overall meet riding title. He was also the leading rider on the NYRA circuit in 2016, 2020 and 2021.

Ortiz closed out the meet with a record of 246-59-44-38 and total purse earnings of $4,921,926, putting him at a win rate of 23.98 percent and in-the-money percentage of 57.32.

“It was very fun–it's great,” said Ortiz, who also won the 2021 Belmont spring/summer title with 59 wins. “I work very hard in the mornings and I receive good opportunities from the owners and trainers and I'm very thankful for that.”

Ortiz added he is looking forward to carrying his good form into the upcoming 40-day Saratoga Race Course summer meet.

“I think it's great to have momentum to go up there. He [Irad Ortiz, Jr.] is going to head there as the favorite, we all know.”   “But I'm going to try to beat him again,” Ortiz said, with a laugh.

Trainer Linda Rice paced all other trainers at the meet to land her fourth consecutive training title at a NYRA track and the second of her career at Belmont. She secured the title with 34 wins.

“It's exciting–it's a lot of fun to win a Belmont title,” said Rice. “We had a good winter at Aqueduct and usually the spring meet gets a little stronger, and we managed to win that. We had no thoughts we would win the spring meet here, so I'm delighted.”

Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables won their 22nd owners' title at a NYRA track for a meet that saw them earn 11 victories.

Breaking from post four, the gray filly tracked a longshot from second up the backstretch, pulled even with her rival past the quarter pole and went on to graduate by 3 lengths over the late-running Ilikefunsize (Upstart). The winner is her dam's first to make the races, but she does have a 3-year-old half-brother named Rapacious (Into Mischief), who was in-utero when Aaron & Marie Jones purchased Princess La Quinta in 2019 at the Keeneland November sale for $600,000. Up To The Mark Posts Towering Victory in Manhattan

Repole Stable and St Elias Stable's UP TO THE MARK (c, 4, Not This Time–Belle's Finale, by Ghostzapper) consolidated his position at the top of the American turf division with a second straight dominating performance at the top level in Saturday's GI Resorts World Casino Manhattan S. at Belmont Park. Made the 8-5 chalk on the strength of a much-the-best victory in the GI Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic on the Kentucky Derby undercard at Churchill Downs May 6, the $450,000 Keeneland September graduate was away in good order and landed just ahead of centerfield as longshot Strong Quality (Quality Road) set out at a quick tempo in advance of Ocean Atlantique (American Pharoah).
