Unusually Bred Into Mischief Filly Debuts at Sapporo

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Sunday running at Sapporo and Niigata Racecourses:

Sunday, August 6, 2023
5th-SAP, ¥13,720,000 ($96k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800mT
MISS MATENRO (f, 2, Into Mischief–Miss Panthere {Jpn}, by Daiwa Major {Jpn}) is the first foal for her dam, who carried the silks of owner and breeder Chiyono Terada to victory in Group 2 company in Japan in 2018, where she had future Horse of the Year Lys Gracieux (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) back in third. Miss Panthere continues to reside in Kentucky, where she has since foaled a full-brother to Miss Matenro and a colt by Authentic before visiting Flightline this year. Norihiro Yokoyama rode Miss Panthere to her Group 2 win and has the call on Miss Matenro. Into Mischief is the sire of 22 winners from 24 Japanese starters. B-Chiyono Terada (KY)

6th-NII, ¥13,720,000 ($96k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800m
HAPPY IMAGE (JPN) (f, 2, Good Magic–Sassy Image, by Broken Vow) is out of a winner of the GI Humana Distaff S. and GI Princess Rooney H. and was purchased in utero by Big Red Farm for $110,000 at the 2021 Keeneland January Sale. The Apr. 30 foal is related to three winners from five to race, including the 15-time winner V J Day (War Front) and is bred on a cross over Fappiano-line dams that has resulted in Grade II-winning juveniles Vegas Magic and Dubyuhnell. B-Big Red Farm

11th-NII, Leopard S.-G3, ¥76,000,000 ($534k), 3yo, 1800m
MYSTIC LORE (c, 3, Arrogate–Folklore, by Tiznow) was beaten narrowly on career debut on turf back in February, but broke his maiden in fine fashion on the dirt the following month and tacked on the equivalent of a first-level allowance when last seen June 24 (see below, SC 7). Having been given a standby invitation for last month's Japan Dirt Derby, the $500,000 Keeneland September purchase finds a good spot here for his stakes debut. The son of 2005 champion 2-year-old filly Foklore boasts a big pedigree, as Folklore's half-sister Rhodochrosite (Unbridled's Song) produced Triple Crown winner Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), whose first-crop progeny flew off the shelf at last month's JHRA Foal Sale. Another half-sister to Folklore, GSP Delightful Quality (Elusive Quality), supplied 'TDN Rising Star' and two-time Eclipse Award winner Essential Quality (Tapit). Leading rider Yuga Kawada has the call. B-Lewis Thoroughbred Breeding LLC (KY)

Cody’s Wish Streaks Into Whitney

Cody's Wish (Curlin) will be heavily favored over five rivals to add another chapter to racing's feel-good story in Saturday's GI Whitney S. at Saratoga.

The Godolphin homebred, winner of last term's GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and the stallion-making GI Hill 'N' Dale Metropolitan H. at Belmont Park June 10, seeks his first career win beyond one mile in the nine-furlong Whitney, a 'Win and You're In' for the GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita.

The 1-2 morning-line favorite, named after Cody Dorman, who was born with the rare genetic disorder Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome and is unable to walk or communicate without utilizing a tablet, is currently riding a six-race winning streak. He will exit widest of all from post six with regular rider Junior Alvarado aboard.

“We have reason to believe he could do it,” Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott said of Cody's Wish tackling the additional distance. “He's come a long way. He was terribly green when we ran him at three in his first few races. He just didn't know whether to go forward or that sort of thing.”

Mott continued, “This is a very good horse and hopefully for our sake, he can go on. There's a great story that goes with him with Cody Dorman, so the whole scenario turns out to be very special.”

The field for the Whitney also includes: last term's GI Blue Grass S. winner Zandon (Upstart), runner-up to Cody's Wish in the Met Mile; and 'TDN Rising Star' Charge It (Tapit), a last out winner of the GII Suburban S. July 8 and fourth-place finisher in the Met Mile.

Saturday's stacked 12-race program at the Spa also co-features a fantastic renewal of the GI Test S. Godolphin homebred and 'TDN Rising Star' Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief) cuts back to seven furlongs following top-shelf wins in the GI Kentucky Oaks May 5 and GI Acorn S. June 9. The rail-drawn, 9-5 morning-line favorite will face off versus unbeaten New York-bred Maple Leaf Mel (Cross Traffic), a sharp winner of the GIII Victory Ride S. downstate July 8.

A field of nine will line up for the GI Saratoga Derby Invitational over the Mellon Turf Course, led by LSU Stable's GI Belmont Derby Invitational S. winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Far Bridge (English Channel). Glen Hill Farm and Mrs. John Magnier's GI Fasig-Tipton Belmont Oaks Invitational S. winner Aspen Grove (Ire) (Justify), cross-entered in Friday's GIII Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Oaks Invitational, will instead take on the boys in the Saratoga Derby.

Last term's GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint upsetter and GI Jaipur S. heroine Caravel (Mizzen Mast), meanwhile, will take on males once again in the GIII Troy S. on the Whitney undercard.

“She's been able to beat the boys three out of her last four and hopefully four out of her last five,” trainer Brad Cox said. “It would be exciting if she can do it again.”

Saturday's graded stakes action also includes Del Mar's GI Clement L. Hirsch, a 'Win and You're In' for the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will be represented by the imposing duo of Adare Manor (Uncle Mo) and Fun to Dream (Arrogate) in the five-horse field. Adare Manor captured her third straight win in the GII Santa Margarita S. June 10 while Fun to Dream just got tagged by a head in the GI Beholder Mile S. last time Mar. 11.

The weekend's graded stakes action rolls into Sunday with upset GIII Schuylerville S. debut winner Becky's Joker (Practical Joke) headlining a field of 10 in the GIII Adirondack S. at Saratoga; the GIII La Jolla H. at Del Mar; Mountaineer Park's GIII West Virginia Derby and GIII West Virginia Governor's S.; and Ellis Park's GIII Pucker Up S.

Occult Dominates Rivals in Monmouth Oaks

It was a Halloween exacta come early as Occult (Into Mischief) dominated the GIII Monmouth Oaks over a determined Foggy Night (Khozan), giving jockey Feargal Lynch the black-type double in New Jersey.

Steadied last out in the GI Acorn at Big Sandy, but recovering well enough to finish third, the 7-5 favorite had already tasted success early this year in New York as the Busanda S. victress at Aqueduct before running fifth in the GIII Gazelle behind Promiseher America (American Pharoah).

Racing four wide after the jump and settling well in that spot off the rail, she was content to watch the contest unfold from seventh as the leading flight debated the pace. Advancing on the backside and five wide into the far bend, Occult caught the eye as she effortlessly circled the field to take charge at the top of the lane. Widening with every stride, she drew off from her rivals and left them 10 1/4 lengths in her wake as Foggy Night and Riding Pretty closed out the trifecta.

“She's a very big filly who needs time to find her stride and get into a nice rhythm. She'll keep going all day once she gets into her stride, so stamina was never an issue with her. I saw there was some cheap speed in here, so I let them go,” said the winning rider. “At the half-mile pole, I was just trying to find a way clear. Because she's such a big striding filly, you think you're going nowhere. But when I watch the replay, I am sure I will be impressed with the way she was moving. It's all about rhythm and momentum with a big horse like that.”

When asked if he'd been given any specific instructions to adhere to, Lynch replied: “Chad Brown never really ties you down with any instructions. He's great to ride for that way. We have a lot of faith in each other. He just said `get a good trip and win.'”

A half-sister to a pair of accomplished Tapits in Exulting and Magical, the latter with her own 2-year-old daughter by Into Mischief named Illusion, Occult is the most recent black-type runner for their dam and the 65th winner at the graded level for her sire. She has a 2-year-old full-brother Imagination and a 2023 half-brother already named Make My Day (Gun Runner).
