Cody’s Wish Among Godolphin Team Plans Outlined

Godolphin's Cody's Wish (Curlin), third in the nine-furlong GI Whitney Aug. 5 at Saratoga, is expected to return to one-turn racing this fall at the Belmont at the Big A meet, according to Michael Banahan, Director of Bloodstock for Godolphin.

A potential landing spot for the 5-year-old could be the seven-furlong GII Vosburgh S. for 3-year-olds Sept. 30, a “Win and You're In” for the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint in November at Santa Anita.

Banahan indicated that the Vosburgh could also be used as a steppingstone to the GI Dirt Mile, which he won last year by a head over Cyberknife.

“We were hoping he would run better in the Whitney and it was a great opportunity to figure it out,” said Banahan. “So, we took our chance and obviously it didn't work out as well as we'd hoped for. But, he's come out of the race well and we'll regroup and try and to make him a repeat winner in the Dirt Mile. I think we'll keep him in New York and potentially run him in the Vosburgh.”

Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, the homebred raced beyond one mile for the first time since July 2021 in the Whitney and attempted his usual closing kick under regular pilot Junior Alvarado, but finished 10 lengths back of the victorious White Abarrio. That ended a six-race win streak that included the Dirt Mile, GI Churchill Downs S., GI Metropolitan H. and last year's GI Forego S.

A winner for Godolphin on the Whitney Day undercard in a tragedy-marred renewal of the GI Test S., Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief) may mark her return in Parx Racing's GI Cotillion S. Sept. 23.

“She came out of the race very well and we found out in the race that the seven-furlong pace was a little too fast for her,” said Banahan. “She stayed on well in the race and came out of it well. Nothing is set in stone yet and we're guided by the filly, but we'll have a look at the Cotillion. It's a significant race and it's the last race at a distance for the 3-year-old fillies.”

Trained by Brendan Walsh, Pretty Mischievous cut back from a win in the one-turn 1 1/16-mile GI Acorn S. in June at Belmont and rallied strongly from four lengths off the pace in the Test to put her head down over Clearly Unhinged.

Banahan added that Godolphin plans to send out both Matareya (Pioneerof the Nile) and Caramel Swirl (Union Rags) in the GI Ballerina H. Aug. 26, a “Win and You're In” for the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Matareya, a dual Grade I-winner trained by Brad Cox, was last seen finishing third in the GIII Chicago S. at Ellis Park, while Caramel Swirl, trained by Mott, has not been seen since finishing third in the GII Bed o' Roses S. June 17 at Belmont.

“Matareya is in good shape and Brad is very happy with where she is at the moment,” said Banahan. “Caramel Swirl will probably run in there as well, so we'll see if one of them can win it.”

Baffert Firster Has Things Down To A ‘T’: A 40th Rising Star for Into Mischief

WinStar Farm and Siena Farm's Pastor T (c, 2, Into Mischief–Top Quality, by Quality Road) covered stacks of ground from a wide draw, but overcame the tough trip to graduate by 4 1/4 impressive lengths to be named the afternoon's second 'TDN Rising Star', the 40th of the all-conquering Into Mischief's sons and daughters to be accorded such honors.

The colt's worktab–both at Santa Anita and over the local strip–didn't so much whisper 'ready' as much as it screamed it and the bay was duly dispatched as a 2-5 mortal to open his account for a barn that strikes with nearly three of every 10 firsters. Drawn eight of eight, Pastor T was one of the first to break the line, but several others were equally smartly away meaning that the heavy favorite was trapped out off the track through an opening quarter-mile in a strong :21.79. Ridden along three furlongs out, Pastor T commenced his wide rally and was more or less on even terms with second-timer I Win Again (Speightstown) at the quarter pole. Juan Hernandez threw his mount over onto his right lead at the furlong grounds and Pastor T took care of the rest, gliding home an easy winner.

A $280,000 Keeneland September yearling, Top Quality–a full-sister to SW Boston Post Road–was a three-time stakes winner in the Pacific Northwest and in British Columbia and was hammered down to WinStar for $335,000 at Keeneland January in 2019. She was mated with the late More Than Ready as a maiden mare, and the results were positive, as American Speed gained black-type with a runner-up effort in this year's Leonatus S. at Turfway Park for these connections. The yearling full-sister to Pastor T was bought back on a bid of $725,000 at this week's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, and Top Quality produced an Uncle Mo colt this term before visiting Justify.

The cross of Into Mischief over Quality Road is now responsible for four winners from five starters. Three of Into Mischief's 17 Grade I winners are out of mares sired by Gone West-line stallions (Authentic, Mia Mischief, Mischievous Alex) and that same cross is found in an additional four of Into Mischief's graded winners.

A $700,000 Ylg FTSAUG purchase, INTEGRATION (Quality Road) debuts for Shug McGaughey. Out of 2016 GI Del Mar Oaks heroine Harmonize (Scat Daddy), who was campaigned and bred by Larkin Armstrong, this 3-year-old colt hails from a deep, extended female family which includes MGSWs like Al Khali (Medaglia d'Oro), Cappuchino (Capote) and Hungry Island (More Than Ready), plus GI Diana S. heroine and MGSW Somali Lemonade (Lemon Drop Kid) and MGISW Verrazano (More Than Ready). Heading to Upstate New York, a trio of 2-year-old colts who will be kicking off their juvenile careers. From the inside, Eliminate (Curlin) is a $525,000 Ylg KEESEP chestnut owned by Spendthrift Farm and Repole Stable out of GSW I'm A Looker (Henny Hughes) whose second dam's half-sister produced MGISW Dortmund (Big Brown). Deeper still on the female side, the Todd Pletcher trainee's fourth dam, champion 2-year-old filly Lakeville Miss (Rainy Lake) is responsible for GISW and GSW Mogambo (Mr. Prospector). The yearling Quality Road sold out of I'm a Looker topped the opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale on Amo Racing's bid of $1.1 million.

Just to his outside is another son of Curlin–Chaperone–who fetched $950,000 at last year's Saratoga sale. Owned by Gus King and trained by Ron Moquett, the chestnut is out of GI Cotillion S. heroine and GI Alabama S. runner-up It Tiz Well (Arch), whose own dam is a half-sister to Canadian champion grass mare Solid Appeal (Successful Appeal).

“He reminded me of all the good things about the Curlins that you would like to see,” said trainer Ron Moquett. “He's a good-sized horse and had a certain sense of class about him. We thought there was a possibility that he would get well over a million and it worked out in our favor. You'd always rather have a horse with expectations and, as a trainer, it's your job to manage the expectations until you get him where he needs to be.”

Breaking from gate five, Deterministic (Liam's Map) is a $625,0000 Ylg KEESEP buy for trainer Christophe Clement. The dark bay's second dam is a half-sister to a pair of successful group winners in Japan, namely Asakusa Genki (Stormy Atlantic) and Rabbit Run (Tapit), and also to MGSW Rainha Da Bateria (Broken Vow). This colt's well-regarded family under the fourth dam Aquilegia (Alydar) also includes her full-sister and champion 2-year-old filly Althea and her unraced daughter's offspring, GI Breeders' Cup Classic hero Bayern (Offlee Wild). Pointing to Southern California, a pair of Bob Baffert trainees by Into Mischief will debut for his barn. Point Dume is a $450,000 KEESEP grad, whose second dam GISW and GISP Island Sand (Tabasco Cat) produced the dam of GI Belmont S. victor Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo) and counts Queen's Plate S. winner Niigon (Unbridled) as her dam's half-sister. The other half of this uncoupled entry is WinStar Farm homebred Pastor T. The bay's multiple stakes-winning dam Top Quality (Quality Road) is a full-sister to SW Boston Post Road and her extended female family includes MGSW Concerto (Chief's Crown) and her half-sister GSW Ilusioned (Woodman). Into Mischief Filly Rolls Down Lane A Spa Maiden Winner

3rd-Saratoga, $88,000, (S), Msw, 8-9, 2yo, f, 5 1/2f (off turf), 1:06.12, ft, 4 3/4 lengths.
TRICKY TEMPER (f, 2, Into Mischief–Winter Book {MSW, $148,299}, by Any Given Saturday) went off as the 6-5 favorite in this off-the-turf debut that saw half of the field scratch following heavy rains earlier in the week. The bay rated to the outside up the backstretch, three off the lead. Tricky Temper was still in chase mode around the far turn, but at the top of the lane, she flashed her speed down the center of the track to win by 4 3/4 lengths over My Kinda Mischief (Maximus Mischief). The winner's dam, who is a half-sister to GSW Motor City (Street Sense), produced a yearling filly by Gift Box and she visited Yaupon for next year.
