July 29 Insights: OBS Bullet Breezer, Caravaggio Filly Debut in Spa Turf Sprint

6th-SAR, $100k, Msw, 2yo, f, 5 1/2fT, 3:55 p.m. ET

A pair of promising-looking juvenile fillies will make their respective debuts while breaking next door to each other in this Thursday turf dash. EMPRESS TIGRESS (Classic Empire) made a big splash at OBS April when breezing a quarter-mile in an eye-popping :20 2/5, one of only two horses at the entire sale to hit that mark, and landed with Augustin Stable after the hammer dropped for $410,000. Trained by Jonathan Thomas, she's out of a half-sister to GSW/MGISP turfer Stays in Vegas (City Zip), while her second dam is a half to Persistently (Smoke Glacken), who upset the mighty Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro) in the 2010 GI Personal Ensign S. over the Saratoga main track. Given the slight nod on the morning line one stall to her outside is Her World (Ire) (Caravaggio) who looks to keep things rolling for her breakout freshman sire, already represented by 11 winners from his first crop of 2-year-olds. Trained by Wesley Ward, the $400,000 Keeneland September buy shows a few snappy works over the Oklahoma turf, most recently going a half-mile in :49 flat (4/68) around dogs July 23. The gray is a half to Group 1-placed Consort (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) out of a half to MGSW Surya (Unbridled), who produced GISW Aruna (Mr. Greeley). Further down the page are six-time Grade I winner Miss Oceana (Alydar) and Group 1 winners Kitwood (Nureyev) and Magic of Life (Seattle Slew). TJCIS PPs

DANCE TO THE MUSIC (Maclean's Music) was a work in progress when Walnut Stream Enterprises, a partnership led by 2-year-old consignor Paul Sharp, snapped her up for a mere $40,000 at Keeneland September last fall. Seven months later, the long-striding chestnut was hammered down to Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal for $575,000 at OBS this past April after breezing in a bullet :10 flat. “We were looking for horses with nice physicals and she developed very well,” Sharp told the TDN's Christie DeBernardis. “Every month she got better and she peaked at the right time.” The April foal is out of an unraced Congrats half-sister to GSW turfer Makeup Artist (Dynaformer). Mirasol (Arrogate) is the latest produce from MGSW & GISP Justwhistledixie (Dixie Union), whose other offspring include MGSW and freshman sire Mohaymen (Tapit), GISW New Year's Day (Street Cry {Ire}), GSW & GISP Enforceable (Tapit) and GSW Kingly (Tapit). The Cleary family also bred the ill-fated MGISW Arrogate. LNF Foxwoods' Honor It (Tapit) is the second foal out of With Honors (War Front), winner of the Juvenile Fillies Turf over the local grass in 2016 and subsequently Grade I-placed on dirt in the GI Chandelier S. The filly's champion third dam Dreaming of Anna (Rahy) is responsible for LNJ Foxwoods' Grade III-winning turf sprinter Dreamologist (Tapit) as well as the late GISP Fast Anna (Medaglia d'Oro) and SP Big Dreaming (Declaration of War). Honor Code Homebred Drawn Wide at Spa…

6th-SAR, $100K, Msw, 2yo, 6f, post time: 3:55 p.m. ET
IRISH SEA (Honor Code) gets gate nine in a field of 10 for his debut. By an eye-popping first-out winner at Saratoga, earning the 'TDN Rising Star' distinction in the process, the dark bay is the second foal out of debut romper Irish Jasper (First Defense), who won the GIII Miss Preakness S. and GIII Victory Ride S. for owner/trainer Derek Ryan in 2015 before being purchased by Will Farish and David Mackie. Trained by Chad Brown in the latter half of her 3-year-old season and throughout her 4-year-old campaign, Irish Jasper was a Spa allowance winner in 2016 before landing that year's GII TCA S. at Keeneland en route to an apperance in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Watasha (Into Mischief) cost owner Peter Brant $450,000 at KEESEP last fall. The half-sister to SW Our Caravan (Daaher) is out of an unraced daughter of GI Acorn S./Mother Goose S./Test S. winner Jersey Girl (Belong to Me), the dam of GISW sire Jersey Town (Speightstown). Competitive Filly Sprinters Kick Off Spa Juvenile Action

5th-SAR, $100k, Msw, 2yo, f, 5 1/2f, 3:21 p.m. ET

Split divisions of juvenile filly sprinters get the Saratoga baby race season underway on opening day Thursday, with this latter half appearing to be clearly the saltier spot on paper. Heads turned when a filly by thus-far unheralded freshman sire Valiant Minister hammered for $360,000–120 times the Bridlewood Farm resident's stud fee–at OBS April, but one viewing of OUTFOXED's breeze-show effort quickly explains why. The dark bay barreled through a powerful :20 4/5 quarter-mile work, sparking a bidding war that ended with Solis/Litt as the last entity standing on behalf of LNJ Foxwoods. The Bill Mott trainee shows a modest local worktab, but did work a half-mile in :49 flat (3/12) from the gate on the Oklahoma training track June 25. Two other debutantes have live looks in Solasta (Goldencents) and Echo Zulu (Gun Runner). The former, owned by Jeff Drown and Don Rachel, is a half-sister to GISW Mia Mischief who cost $300,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling buy. The bay has breezed sharply for Jeremiah Englehart, including a best-of-31 bullet half-mile from the gate over this strip in :47 3/5 July 1. The latter, who goes out for L and N Racing and Winchell Thoroughbreds, is a half to last summer's GI H. Allen Jerkens S. hero Echo Town (Speightstown) and GSW J Boys Echo (Mineshaft). She sports a four-furlong gate bullet of her own, going the distance in :47 2/5 (1/44) June 15 at Keeneland. One of only two horses in the 10-horse group with racing experience, Pop-A-Top's Lady Scarlet (Union Rags) gets the slight nod on the morning line at 5-2 after showing good speed and finishing a clear second for Brad Cox in the opener June 4 at Churchill. Tuesday Insights: Flatter Filly Looks To Create Some Debut ‘Buzz’

Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency
9th-IND, $34K, Msw, 3yo/up, f/m, 6f, post time: 6:33 p.m. ET
STING LIKE ABBY (Flatter) debuts for trainer Ignacio Correas IV and cost Kingsport Farm $375,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September sale, making her the second most-expensive filly sold that year by her successful sire. Flatter's daughter Search Results–also bred at Machmer Hall–was a game runner-up in the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks before going one better in the GI Acorn S. at Belmont Park last month. The March foal is the second produce out of Simply Sunny (Unbridled's Song), a half-sister to SW & GISP Reveron (Songandaprayer), who produced future G3 UAE 2000 Guineas winner Fore Left to the cover of Twirling Candy in 2017. That same cross is also responsible for the Machmer Hall-bred 'TDN Rising Star' and Lane's End stallion Gift Box, whose older half-sister is MGSW & GISP Stonetastic (Mizzen Mast) and whose younger half-brother is GSW Special Forces (Candy Ride {Arg}).
