A well-bred bunch of 2-year-old males gets the Sunday program off to a competitive beginning at Aqueduct. BIG WICKS (Medaglia d'Oro), a $575,000 graduate of last year's Keeneland September sale, is part of an entry that is favored at 2-1 on the morning line and is a son of Sovereign Award-winning 3-year-old filly Leigh Court (Grand Slam), a two-time graded winner for the late Eugene Melnyk who was purchased by Speedway Stables for an even $1 million from the Melnyk dispersal at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Kept in training at five and six, Leigh Court–a half to three full stakes winners–would go on to add the GIII Whimsical S. in 2016. The dark bay faces $1-million KEESEP grad Phelpsy (Into Mischief), fifth on Saratoga debut July 23; and Point Proven (Gun Runner), a $675,000 September purchase who was seventh to 'TDN Rising Star' Disarm (Gun Runner) at the Spa Aug. 6. THAT SUN OF A GUN (Gun Runner) is the latest produce of 14-time winner Suzee Sunrise (Chester House), whose best foal to date is New Jersey-bred Golden Brown (Offlee Wild), winner of the 2018 GIII Kent S. on the turf at Delaware and a six-time stakes winner in state-bred restricted company for earnings of better than $810,000. The mare's less-heralded Sunny Star (Flatter) has punched well above his weight in Hong Kong, where he has won five races and $802,000 while placing in Group 3 company on the turf. Like Golden Brown, That Sun of a Gun is conditioned by Pat McBurney. TJCIS PPs

The juvenile filly set gets their chance going the one-turn mile, a group headed–on pedigree, at a minimum–by Spendthrift's ANISTON (Curlin), who isn't here just to make 'friends.' A $550,000 acquisition at KEESEP this time last year, the Apr. 28 foal is chestnut in color the same as her 'TDN Rising Star' full-sister Souper Sensational, winner of the 2011 GIII Victory Ride S. and runner-up in the GI Test S. while also proving her versatility with a near-miss second in this year's GII Royal North S. sprinting on the turf at Woodbine. Dam Kateri (Indian Charlie) is an unraced daughter of Grade III winner Sue's Good News (Woodman), the dam of GI Odgen Phipps H. victress Tiz Miz Sue (Tiznow) and granddam of GSP Serein (Uncle Mo) and MSP Surfer Dude (Curlin). Sue's Good News also dropped Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Bulletin (City Zip). Tangential (Justify), a half-sister to GSP Carried Interest (Henny Hughes), is out of a full-sister to the stakes-producing MGSW/GISP Allamerican Bertie (Quiet American); and a half to MGSW & GISP Hurricane Bertie (Storm Boot). The May 24 foal, an $80,000 KEESEP grad, made $450,000 at OBS April this year after breezing a furlong in :10 1/5. TJCIS PPs

PRETTY MISCHIEVOUS (Into Mischief) is the second foal to the races out of Pretty City Dancer (Tapit), who shared the spoils with her sire's daughter Sweet Loretta in the 2016 GI Spinaway S. at Saratoga. A half-sister to GISW Lear's Princess (Lear Fan)–who would have been best-backed behind Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro) in the 2007 GI Kentucky Oaks before scratching from the race–Pretty City Dancer was acquired by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock on behalf of Godolphin for $3.5 million in foal to Medaglia d'Oro at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Sunday Insights: There’s ‘Magic’ In the Air at Del Mar

Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency

3rd-DMR, $80K, Msw, 2yo, 1mT, post time: 5:00 p.m. ET
Of the 94 first-crop yearlings by Good Magic reported as sold in 2021 (110 ring), no horse cost more than REINCARNATE, who gets his career going at what has been a soggy Del Mar over the weekend. The Apr. 1 foal, a $775,000 purchase out of last year's Keeneland September sale, is out of the stakes-winning Allanah (Scat Daddy), who was acquired by Peter O'Callaghan's Woods Edge Farm for $105,000 in foal to Street Boss at the 2018 Keeneland November Sale. Trained by Bob Baffert for SF Racing, Starlight Racing and Madaket Stable, the gray colt must overcome a high draw in a race that could be washed onto the main track. American Empire (American Pharoah) is a son of Team Block's 2012 GIII Pucker Up S. victress Leading Astray (Belong to Me), a half-sister to the Illinois-based operation's GIII Kentucky Turf Cup hero Suntracer (Kitten's Joy), MGSW turf marathoner Free Fighter (Out of Place) and a full-sister to SW/MGSP Corrupt (Belong to Me). ZED (Arrogate) is the first foal out of Shane's Girlfriend (Adios Charlie), who made an enormous splash as a juvenile for trainer Doug O'Neill with a dominating 13 1/4-length victory in the GIII Delta Downs Princess S. The dark bay races in partnership for WC Racing, who was also part-owner of Shane's Girlfriend. The dark bay prepped for this with a bullet half-mile in :47 3/5 over the Keeneland main track Sept. 3. Permafrost (Frosted) is a half-brother to three-time graded winner Divine Oath (Broken Vow) and GSW Auntie Joy (Uncle Mo) and counts the irrepressible Personal Ensign (Private Account) as his third dam. Michael Petersen and Willow Grace Farm, who campaign last year's GI Del Mar Debutante winner Grace Adler (Curlin) in partnership, team up for the Sunday opener at Del Mar with $950K Keeneland September acquisition CARLA (Medaglia d'Oro). The February foal is the first produce from Naples Princess (Distorted Humor), a full-sister to SW Banker's Buy and a half to SW City Dweller (Carson City) and SW Glacken's Gal (Smoke Glacken), the dam of GII Davona Dale S. victress Live Lively (Medaglia d'Oro). The hugely productive cross of Medaglia d'Oro over Distorted Humor mares has yielded the likes of two-time Hong Kong Horse of the Year Golden Sixty (Aus) and additional Grade I winners Elate and New Money Honey, while extending to Forty Niner-line dams brings in the likes of multiple champion Songbird and Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra. The debuting Carnaby Street got American Pharoah on the board in the opening race of the meet Thursday afternoon and ON THE TEAR looks to continue the momentum here. A $350K KEESEP purchase, the Springhouse Farm-bred is a half-brother to this year's Star Shoot S. heroine Beautiful Empire (Classic Empire) and his dam, purchased by Springhouse for $260K in foal to Shanghai Bobby at Fasig-Tipton November in 2016, is a half-sister to successful young sire Practical Joke (Into Mischief). Life At Sea (West Coast) is the third foal to race out of Irish Jasper (First Defence), three times a graded winner sprinting on the main track. TJCIS PPs

6th-SAR, $105K, Msw, 2yo, f, 7f, post time: 3:20 p.m. ET
It's been an outstanding meet for Curlin and Stonestreet homebred PURE PAULINE will attempt to open her account at first asking Sunday. Inheriting the chestnut coloring of both her sire and of her GII Black-Eyed Susan S.-winning dam Keen Pauline (Pulpit), the Apr. 24 is bred on a variant of the cross over A.P. Indy-line mares that has tossed up Malathaat, Nest and Cody's Wish, each a Grade I winner during the current meet at Saratoga. Curlin is also represented by the rail-drawn third-time starter Take Charge Briana, whose dam Take Charge Tressa is a full-sister to MGISW and Spendthrift sire Omaha Beach (War Front). TJCIS PPs

7th-SAR, $105K, Msw, 2yo, f, 1 1/16mT, post time: 3:53 p.m. ET
PROUVER (Justify), a $310K graduate of last year's Keeneland September sale, is a daughter of Ready to Act (More Than Ready), who won her maiden at first asking sprinting over the local turf course and was well on her way to victory in the 2013 GII Natalma S. when she abruptly ducked in and unseated jockey Rajiv Maragh. The gray filly would go on to win the 2014 Sweetest Chant S. over the Gulfstream turf course and the GII Beaumont S. at Keeneland when the race was contested on the Polytrack. This is the extended female family of GI Hollywood Gold Cup hero and GI Pacific Classic third Mast Track (Mizzen Mast). Writteninthestars (Malibu Moon), a $110K KEESEP yearling turned $500K Fasig-Tipton Midlantic juvenile (:10 2/5, see below), is out of a half-sister to GSW Sparky Ville (Candy Ride {Arg}) and hails from the family of GISWs Harmony Lodge and Pinehurst and MGSW Graeme Hall. 4th-SAR, $88k, Msw, (S), 2yo, 7f, 2:47 p.m. ET

The New York-bred program will be celebrated Friday at Saratoga with an all state-bred card featuring six stakes, and a live-looking maiden race in the fourth headlined by Hoolie Racing Stable's firster CHULLIGAN (Justify) should not be overlooked. The chestnut, who sold for $825,000 last summer at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga, is the second foal to race out of three-time New York-bred stakes winner and 2017 GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint upsetter Bar of Gold (Medaglia d'Oro), following GSW turfer Coinage (Tapit). The Christophe Clement trainee shows a sharp-looking worktab over this track, most recently going a half-mile in :47 4/5 (8/40) from the gate Aug. 19. Quick to Accuse (Accelerate) also opens his account in here for owner Rupp Racing and trainer Horacio De Paz. The bay is a half to millionaire New York-bred stalwart and 11-time stakes winner Mr. Buff (Friend Or Foe) and sold for $200,000 at OBS March after breezing a furlong in :10 1/5. TJCIS PPs
