Report: Idol Out Of Breeders’ Cup Classic

Idol, winner of the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap in March, will not be entered in Saturday's Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic, according to a tweet from Jay Privman of Daily Racing Form.

Trainer Richard Baltas noted that after Idol's workout on Sunday morning the 4-year-old son of Curlin was “tight behind” while cooling out at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., site of this year's Breeders' Cup World Championships. Idol breezed five furlongs in 1:02.40, according to Equibase.

Owned by Calvin Nguyen, Idol has one win in three starts in 2021. A sixth-place finish in the G1 Awesome Again Stakes on Oct. 2 was his first start since the Santa Anita Handicap.

With Idol's defection, the G1 Classic has nine likely starters, including Essential Quality, Knicks Go, Medina Spirit, and Hot Rod Charlie. Post positions for the Nov. 6 G1 Classic will be drawn Monday, Nov. 1.
