New York Race Track Chaplaincy Charity Basketball Game Canceled

The 13th annual jockeys-versus-horsemen charity basketball game, which benefits the programs of the New York Race Track Chaplaincy and was scheduled to be played on Wednesday, Sept. 1, has been canceled.

“With COVID-19 infection rates climbing again, we just couldn't jeopardize the safety of the participants or the hundreds of fans who come to the game each year, so we decided it was best to cancel it once again,” said NY Race Track Chaplaincy executive director and lead chaplain Humberto Chavez. “We are all disappointed but hopefully we can resume the tradition next summer during the Saratoga meet.”

The game, which was not able to be played last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is one of the most popular events on the Saratoga social calendar and it routinely attracts more than 300 fans.

The jockey team is usually coached by Hall of Fame jockey Ángel Cordero Jr., with trainer Todd Pletcher and agent Kiaran McLaughlin coaching the horsemen team. Mitch Levites of the NYRA television department serves as the announcer and provides lively commentary.

Jockeys-Versus-Horsemen Charity Basketball Game Returns To Saratoga On Sept. 1

The 13th annual jockeys-versus-horsemen charity basketball game, which benefits the programs of the New York Race Track Chaplaincy, will be played Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at the Saratoga Springs Recreation Center at 6:30 p.m.

The game, which was not able to be played last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is one of the most popular events on the Saratoga social calendar and it routinely attracts more than 300 fans. Admission is free.

The jockey team will again be coached by Hall of Fame jockey Ángel Cordero Jr., with trainer Todd Pletcher and agent Kiaran McLaughlin coaching the horsemen team. Mitch Levites of the NYRA television department will serve as the announcer and provide lively commentary.

Proceeds from this event serve to benefit signature programs of the NY Race Track Chaplaincy.

“We are delighted to be able to play the game this year,” said Humberto Chavez, the New York Chaplaincy lead chaplain and executive director. “This is a cherished tradition, and everyone really missed it last year. The funds go to support the backstretch community and Saratogians are great supporters of those who take care of the horses behind the scenes.”

Fans will be able to participate in raffles and one lucky fan will leave with a custom, autographed bobblehead of champion jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.

The NY Race Track Chaplaincy provides the backstretch community with children's enrichment, social service, and recreational programs, as well as educational opportunities, and non-denominational religious services.

Horsemen, individuals, or organizations who would like to sponsor the game may do so via the NY Chaplaincy website at www.rtcany.org or by contacting Eleanor Poppe at info@rtcany.org or 516-428-5267.

NY Chaplaincy Seeks Summer Program Sponsors

The New York Race Track Chaplaincy is seeking support for its Summer Enrichment Program in Saratoga for the children of backstretch workers. For over a decade, the chaplaincy has provided the program to keep Saratoga families together during the racing season and give the children an opportunity to experience a summer that some have never had before; away from the city and the track.

In 2020, the NY Chaplaincy commenced a Summer Enrichment Program in Belmont in order to fulfill the local need for a summer program due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The experience of 2020 demonstrated to us that there is a significant need for a program at Belmont which will continue even with the resumption of racing in Saratoga,” said Chaplain Humberto Chavez. “Many of our families remain at Belmont in the summer and we recognize there is an annual need for a quality summer enrichment program at both tracks. We thank you for your historic support of our Summer Enrichment Program and invite you to partner with us as we prepare to begin the 2021 program. We turn no child away and thank you for allowing us to serve the families of the backstretch in this critically important way.”

New York Race Track Chaplaincy To Honor Irad Ortiz Jr.

The New York Race Track Chaplaincy will honor jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. for his generous and continued devotion to the backstretch community at its fundraiser during the  2021 Saratoga racing meet in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

“Since his arrival on the New York Racing Association circuit, Irad has demonstrated a deep appreciation for our backstretch community, and his actions have directly and indirectly improved the quality of life for those who make their living caring for horses,” said Humberto Chavez, the chaplain for the NY Chaplaincy.  “He is immensely deserving of this honor.”

Ortiz, a native of Trujillo Alto in Puerto Rico, has won nearly 2700 races and earned nearly $200 million in purses in his career. He won the Eclipse Award as the nation's outstanding jockey in both 2018 and 2019.  He also took home the title of the leading jockey of the 2020 Saratoga meet.

He won the 2016 Belmont Stakes aboard Creator and has won 11 Breeders' Cup races.

“Racing would not exist without the dedicated individuals who care for the horses,” said Ortiz.  “It is a blessing and an honor to support them through the work of the NY Chaplaincy.”

Previous honorees have included Anne Campbell, Edgar Prado, Michael Dubb, Fay and David Donk, Marylou Whitney/John Hendrickson, Letty and Kiaran McLaughlin, Lisa and Kenny Troutt, Debbie and Terry Finley and, last year, the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association.

The honoree is presented with an original painting by equine artist Tom Chapman at a brunch typically held at the Saratoga National Golf Club in Saratoga Springs. The event was held virtually under a different format in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are extremely hopeful that we will be able to once again host our annual event in person and make the presentation to Irad,” said Chavez, “but we will go forward with it only when we can ensure the health and safety of our attendees. We will make those decisions when we get closer to August and will get the word out.”

The NY Race Track Chaplaincy, which will soon be expanding its services as it breaks ground on a dedicated building at Belmont Park, serves the NY backstretch community with children's enrichment, social service, recreational, and educational programming as well as non-denominational religious services.
