Cross Country Pick 5 Ending With Vanderbilt Pays $1,277

Saturday's Cross Country Pick 5 returned $1,277.75 for selecting all five winners for the 50-cent wager. Encompassing action from Saratoga Race Course, Monmouth Park and Woodbine Racetrack, the sequence's total pool was $163,442.

Woodbine kicked off the wager when Afleet Katherine edged Perfection Cat by a head to win Race 9, an allowance for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up. Trained by Kevin Attard, whose Starship Jubilee upset champion Sistercharlie earlier in the day in the Grade 2 Ballston Spa at Saratoga, Afleet Katherine returned $14.50 on a $2 win wager.

Monmouth, located in Oceanport, N.J., hosted the second leg, as Croatian outkicked Lookin at Roses by a head to win a starter handicap going 1 1/16 miles on the main track. Trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer, Croatian paid $3.40 as the favorite on the fast track in Race 11.

Action shifted to historic Saratoga for the third leg, with jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. piloting Turbo Drive to a one-length win in a 1 1/16-mile turf allowance in Race 9. Off at 17-1, the Mike Maker trainee paid $36.60, rallying from 11th after three-quarters of a mile for a furious charge that saw the New York-bred run down the competition in the final furlong.

Back at Woodbine for Race 10, Red Hierarchy cruised to a six-length win in the 6 ½-furlong sprint on the Rexdale, Ontario-based all-weather track. Trained by Jamie Attard, Red Hierarchy went off as the favorite, paying $3.90.

Saratoga was the site of the sequence's lone stakes, as Volatile went gate-to-wire to defeat a four-horse field in the Grade 1, $250,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap in Race 10. Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, the 4-year-old son of Violence improved to 3-for-3 in 2020, completing the six-furlong sprint in 1:09.61. Ridden by Ricardo Santana, Jr., Volatile paid $2.80 as the favorite. The $850,000 purchase at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale is 5-1-0 in six starts has won four straight.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on track, on ADW platforms, and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.

Colonial Downs Postpones Monday’s Opening-Day Card Due To Extreme Heat

Colonial Downs has postponed Monday's opening-day card prompted by dangerous heat conditions with heat index forecasts over 100 degrees.

The change is to safeguard the health of people working, along with horses shipping and racing during these conditions.  Monday's races will be re-carded for Sunday, August 2, and horsemen will need to re-enter on Tuesday, July 28.

Colonial Downs revised opening day features a nine-race card planned for Tuesday, July 28, with a post time of 5:30 p.m. ET.

Under a spectator-free designation, fans are encouraged to tune into the TVG Network to watch live racing from Colonial Downs and wager via tvg.com; twinspires.com; xpressbet.com; and nyrabets.com.

Gulfstream Park: $1-Million Jackpot Guarantee For Sunday’s Rainbow 6

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $1 million when racing resumes Sunday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

First race post is noon.

The Rainbow 6 has not been hit by a single winning ticket in 14 consecutive days. Multiple tickets with six winners Saturday returned $4,015.80.

Sunday's Rainbow 6 begins with the sixth race, a mile turf event for 3-year-olds and up that attracted a field of nine. The seventh race and second in the Rainbow 6 sequence is a $50,000 maiden event for 3-year-olds that has a 9-5 morning-line favorite in El Pillo. There are four turf races in Sunday's Rainbow 6 with the final two races being run on the grass.

The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

There will be a mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 on Sunday, August 2.

Tatweej Makes Winning Debut, Mexican Wonder Boy Wins U.S. Debut
Shadwell Stable's Tatweej, a 3-year-old son of Tapit purchased for $2.5 million at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, won his racing debut Saturday at a mile. Out of the Grade 1-winning mare Tiz Miz Sue, Tatweej set fractions of :23.80, :46.10 and 1:10.50 for trainer Todd Pletcher before coming home under jockey Edgard Zayas in 1:36.60.

Don Fausto Racing's 3-year-old colt Mexican Wonder Boy made a successful U.S. debut, winning an allowance optional claimer at a mile in 1:36.94. Trained by Fausto Gutierrez, Mexican Wonder Boy won four of seven races in Mexico last year, his last three by 31 ¾ lengths. For jockey Leonel Reyes it was his 300th victory in the U.S.

Beat Ray At Del Mar Online Contest: A Bear Trap On The Beach

The only good thing I can say about racing being cancelled last weekend at Del Mar is that I didn't have to lose another round in the track's Beat Ray Everyday online handicapping contest.

But with the return of racing on Friday kicking off a four-day, stakes-packed weekend at the seaside track, I am loaded for bear … literally.

Chris Fallica, the ESPN College GameDay personality known as The Bear and a skilled horseplayer in his own right, has been recruited by Del Mar to trounce challenge me in the second celebrity round of Beat Ray Everyday.

As its name implies, Beat Ray Everyday is an online contest offered every racing day of the Del Mar summer meet. It's free to play and you can still sign up here. All you have to do is bet a mythical $100 each day on the selected contest race in win, place or show bets on any horse or horses. You can read the specific rules here. At the end of the meet, the player with the highest bankroll with those wagers  becomes the “Beach Boss” and wins two VIP tickets to the 2021 Breeders' Cup at Del Mar. Other prizes are available to top finishers and anyone who finishes ahead of me is entered in a drawing for even more prizes.

Every Saturday, a racing or sports celebrity will be a guest handicapper and take their turns beating me like a drum.

The Bear will join fellow handicapper Michelle Yu and me on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT on Del Mar's social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube) to handicap the day's contest race, the Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes for 3-year-old fillies going a mile on turf as the ninth race. Tune in to hear our handicapping strategies and our bets for the contest.

Based on his Tweet, The Bear seems a bit overconfident going into this round.

I've spent hours reviewing replays and poring over past performances for the San Clemente. By any estimation, it's a wide-open race, though I'm pretty sure I've found the right horse, the late-running Irish-bred Croughavouke from the barn of Jeff Mullins. She's 6-1 on the morning line and overdue for a winning race after recording three seconds and a third in seven U.S. starts.

Despite that confidence Croughavouke, I'm placing a hedge bet on 15-1 outsider Over Attracted, who spent her early days in France and will be making her second U.S. start for trainer Carla Gaines and jockey Mike Smith.
