Tattersalls August Sale Catalog Now Online

The catalog for the two-day Tattersalls August Sale, which takes place Tuesday, Aug. 31 – Wednesday Sept. 1, is now online and can be viewed at www.tattersalls.com.

Numbering 458 lots, the Tattersalls August Sale comprises 308 colts and geldings in/out of training and 138 fillies in/out of training, as well as 12 broodmares.

This year's edition of the Tattersalls August Sale has again attracted consignments from many of the world's foremost owner/breeders including Ballydoyle Stables, Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms and Shadwell Estate Company, as well as drafts from many of the UK and Ireland's leading trainers.

High-class French form is a feature amongst the leading lots cataloged in the August Sale. Agent Jamie Railton will offer Pascal Bary's Group 3 winner Pretrville, runner-up in the Group 2 Prix du Muguet in May, alongside a pair of Listed-placed two-year-olds colts in Bunglejungleparty and Papa Don't Preach.

Well-bred colts with high-class form are a customary feature of drafts from Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle Stables and the Group 3 placed duo Arturo Toscanini and Lough Derg and the Listed placed Horoscope look certain to attract plenty of interest.

Several promising lightly-raced 3-year-olds look certain to pique the interest of buyers including the Paddy Twomey trained Beamish, the Teofilo half-brother to dual Group 3 winner Bourree who was an impressive three-length winner of his only start at Leopardstown. The winning Territories gelding London Royal has earned an official rating of 94 following only three starts for trainer Ted Walsh, and Roger Varian's 90-rated Dinoo broke his maiden by four lengths on his most recent start at Haydock. William Haggas will offer the progressive Sea the Stars gelding Chalk Stream, rated 86 following a win on his most recent start at York.

Consignments from Juddmonte Farms are always amongst the highlights of horses-in-training sales at Tattersalls and their select August Sale draft is no exception featuring the smart three-year-old colt Fabilis, a 96-rated full brother to Group 3 winner Monarchs Glen. The ever-popular Godolphin draft includes a customary offering of smartly-bred fillies led by Bright Spirit, a daughter of Dubawi out of the three-time Group 3 winner Local Time.

Buyers looking for well-related fillies will have plenty more to consider including the Baroda Stud-consigned Golden Hind, a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Amazing Maria, and Burning Sea, a full-sister to Group 3 winner Blue de Vega and to the dam of Group 2 winner Angel Power who will be offered by the Castlebridge Consignment.

The largest consignment comes from Shadwell Estate Company who have a draft of 44 lots catalogued featuring unexposed winning 3-year-olds Afkaar, Maraakiz, Mothill, and Taskheer and several highly-rated older horses including the 94-rated Taqareer. Amongst the 27 lots offered by the Castlebridge Consignment are two promising 3-year-olds trained by John and Thady Gosden in Rifleman and Zagato. The 95-rated Rifleman has shown smart form in his three starts this year whilst the regally-bred Zagato, a son of Frankel out of the dual Group 1 winner Izzi Top, earned an official rating of 86 following an easy 3 1/4-length win at Thirsk on his most recent start.

Commenting on the catalog for the Tattersalls August Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“The Tattersalls August Sale was introduced for the first time in 2020 in response to COVID-related circumstances, but the enthusiasm for the sale from both vendors and purchasers and an extraordinary clearance rate made it an easy decision to make it a permanent fixture. With the Tattersalls July Sale being held in more normal circumstances this year, it was natural that the catalogue size for the second edition of the August Sale would reduce but we are still delighted to catalogue 458 lots over two days that will appeal to a wide cross section of buyers, both domestic and further afield. We are also pleased that buyers from the key Middle Eastern markets will find it much easier to travel to the UK for the sale with the recent easing of restrictions for fully vaccinated travelers.”

The Tattersalls August Sale will take place from Tuesday, Aug. 31 to Wednesday, Sept. 1, and buyers unable to attend the sale in person will be able to bid via the Tattersalls Live Internet Bidding platform or telephone bidding through members of the Tattersalls team. Full details of the expanded bidding options can be found on the Tattersalls website.

Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association Announces Purse Increases To Stakes Schedule

The Pennsylvania-bred stakes schedule received a major boost for the remainder of the year, with four stakes doubling in value to $200,000, plus the addition of two $100,000 stakes. A total of $2.6 million in purses will now be paid out in restricted state-bred stakes in 2021.

“Our revenue has stabilized and the Race Horse Development Trust Fund has stood strong,” said Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association's executive secretary Brian Sanfratello. “We wanted to send a message that Pennsylvania is on the move and the premier place to breed and race.”

Purses have been increased for the year-end 2-year-old stakes, the Shamrock Rose for fillies at Penn National on Friday, Nov. 26 and the Pennsylvania Nursery at Parx Racing on Tuesday, Dec. 7, as well as the Alphabet Soup and Plum Pretty for older runners on Parx Racing's rich Sept. 25 Pennsylvania Derby card.

Returning to the schedule are two six-furlong 3-year-old stakes cut earlier in the year – the New Start for fillies, and the Danzig – both to run at Penn National on Friday, Oct. 22.

Elizabeth Merryman, chair of the PHBA racing committee, says the increases come at an opportune time.

“We're making up for last year,” she explained, noting the reductions to the PHBA Breeding Fund due to COVID, as well as attempts by the governor to alter the Fund, which have since been resolved. “Now that things have gotten much more stabilized, it's great that we can add stakes and put big purses on the 2-year-old stakes at the right time of the year, where they can catch the attention of people making buying decisions at the sales. Buyers are going to look closer at the PA-breds, which helps the breeders.

“We're giving away substantial sums of money and the program is getting bigger and stronger,” Merryman added. “It helps the breeders by advertising the program.”

PHBA president Greg Newell says the boost to the stakes program rewards the resiliency of those involved in the breeding and racing industry in the state. “Being wise with our money and managing it carefully and having the resources available, we want to say thank you to our members and to share with the general racing community the strength of the breeding program in Pennsylvania.”

The updated stakes and their conditions are:

Saturday, Sept. 25, Parx Racing

  • $200,000 Alphabet Soup Handicap, 3 & up, 1 1⁄16 miles, turf
  • $200,000 Plum Pretty Stakes, 3 & up, fillies & mares, 1 1⁄16 miles

Friday, Oct. 22, Penn National

  • $100,000 Danzig Stakes, 3-year-olds, 6 furlongs
  • $100,000 New Start Stakes, 3-year-old fillies, 6 furlongs

Friday, Nov. 26, Penn National

  • $200,000 Shamrock Rose Stakes, 2-year-old fillies, 6 furlongs

Tuesday, Dec. 7, Parx Racing

  • $200,000 Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes, 2-year-olds, 7 furlongs

MYSTIC EYES (f, 2, Maclean's Music–Cloudburst {SW}, by Storm Cat) suggested an affinity for the turf with a five-furlong spin over the Oklahoma track in 1:02 (9/28) around the dogs July 31, and the money that poured in late for her proved smart. Off at 65 cents on the dollar, the $40,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase was not the quickest away from the inside stall, but was hustled up to grab command moving down the backstretch. Always maintaining a gap on her rivals, Mystic Eyes was under a hand ride into the stretch and proved not for catching. She had 4 1/2 lengths on I'm So Sorry (Uncle Mo) rallied inside for second ahead of late-on-the-scene Mostly Harmless (Violence). A half-sister to Tempers Flair (Smart Strike), the stakes-placed dam of GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint and Saudi Derby runner-up Cowan (Kantharos), Mystic Eyes is out of a half-sister to champion Boston Harbor (Capote). Third dam Tinnitus produced champion sprinter Groovy. Cloudburst was most recently bred to Cairo Prince. Pin Oak Stud To Disperse Equine Assets, Host Special Auction At Fasig-Tipton On September 12

Josephine Abercrombie's Pin Oak Stud, one of the country's most successful Thoroughbred breeding and racing operations over the past six decades, announced Aug. 5 that it will be offering its remaining broodmares, weanlings, and some racing fillies at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky on Sept. 12.

Denali Stud will handle the sale as agent for Pin Oak. Separate from this main group are 14 yearlings which will be offered in the upcoming Keeneland September Sale and one yearling is entered to sell at Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga Sale. Some 14 retired mares and horses will remain on the farm.

“This has been part of Ms. Abercrombie's plan all along, as we have been selling mares and downsizing the past few years,” said farm manager Clifford Barry. “Actually, in keeping to her plan, we have sold more yearlings than we kept in training the past couple of years.”

Among the 24 horses being offered in September are multiple graded stakes winners Overheard, winner of the Grade 2 Pin Oak Valley View and G3 Dance Smartly Stakes, in foal to Grade 1 winner at two, three, and four Mckinzie; Gold Medal Dancer, winner of the G2 Azeri Stakes, and placed in both the G1 La Troienne Stakes and G1 Apple Blossom Handicap, in foal to top sire Munnings; Dont Leave Me, winner of the G3 Bourbonette Oaks and G3 Ontario Colleen Stakes, in foal to champion and winner of the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic Authentic; and stakes winner Point System, in foal to champion Improbable.

The 2021 foals out of these mares and others are also part of the sale on Sept. 12.  These weanlings are by such outstanding sires as Medaglia d'Oro. Street Sense, Ghostzapper, Candy Ride, Flatter, and Justify.

Craig Bandoroff, whose Denali Stud will be handling the sale, remarked, “We have been fortunate to represent Pin Oak Stud for over 15 years. I've always considered it a compliment to have the Denali Stud name associated with Pin Oak and Josephine Abercrombie. Their pursuit of excellence, their integrity and their highest level of horsemanship has made representing them an honor, not a job.

“Although I'm saddened to see this day come, I'm proud that we have been asked to represent a woman and a farm that I admire and revere,” Bandoroff continued.  We will do our best to represent not just an accomplished horsewoman and her legacy but an incredible person who has positively impacted many lives through her various endeavors.”

Recognized as the 1995 National Thoroughbred Breeder of the Year, Pin Oak Stud has produced or campaigned over 100 stakes winners.  Prominent homebreds to carry the distinct blue and gray striped silks include Peaks and Valleys, Broken Vow, Confessional, See How She Runs, Hasten to Add, Laugh and Be Merry, and Missed the Storm.  Additional top performers are graded stakes-winning earners over $500,000 and include Alternation, Brownie Points, Bedanken, Synchrony, Alternate, Euphony, Cryptograph, Gold Medal Dancer and Overheard.

An active supporter of the racing industry as well as her community, Ms. Abercrombie has been honored with the William T. Young Humanitarian Award and the Hardboot Award, both presented by the KTA/KTOB.  In 2018, Ms. Abercrombie received one of the industry's most prestigious awards when she was named the Thoroughbred Club of America Honor Guest.

“The names Josephine Abercrombie and Pin Oak Stud are synonymous with excellence and quality,” noted Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning.  “Ms. Abercrombie is a pillar of the Thoroughbred industry and our local community.  Her legacy will carry forward through the lives of the many people she impacted and these Thoroughbred families she cultivated and developed.”
