Pretty In Pink: A Mendelssohn Rising Star at Saratoga

e Five Racing Thoroughbreds' Pink Hue (f, 2, Mendelssohn–Involved, by Speightstown) was a bit short of running room when push was about to come to shove in Sunday's sixth race going two turns over the Saratoga turf course, but once the daylight came, the $310,000 Keeneland September graduate went through her gears and ran up the score to defeat the well-meant Xigera (Nyquist) by 2 3/4 resounding lengths.

Guided down onto the fence after brushing with a rival at the break, Pink Hue got a foothold at the fence from fourth as La Grotte (Bolt d'Oro) led from Xigera, who looked a bit reluctant to settle for Julien Leparoux. The latter–off at 6-1 from a 15-1 morning line–was given a very confident steer and tried to pinch the race in upper stretch, but Pink Hue, locked away inside but traveling strongly passing the quarter pole, found a gap three off the fence with a bit more than an eighth of a mile to gallop and she was off and gone from there. Pink Hue was the workmate of race five winner Raging Sea in the lead-up to this debut.

Pink Hue is the seventh individual winner for her freshman sire (by Scat Daddy) and the Keeneland September topper's first to be named a 'Rising Star'. She is a half-sister to Godolphin's Man of Promise (Into Mischief, $560,378), impressive winner of the G3 Nad al Sheba Turf Sprint at Meydan this past March and subsequently third in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint. Involved, a two-time winner at the races, is a half-sister to dual Grade III winner Skip to the Stone (Skip Trial) and to the stakes-winning My Heavenly Sign (Forest Camp), dam of SP Avasarala (Point of Entry). Not covered during the 2020 breeding season, Involved sold for just $8,000 at the 2021 Keeneland January Sale and most recently produced a colt by Audible.

Curlin Filly All The ‘Rage’ On Saratoga Debut

5th-Saratoga, $105,000, Msw, 8-7, 2yo, f, 7f, 1:25.36, ft, neck.
RAGING SEA (f, 2, Curlin–Stormy Welcome, by Storm Cat), allowed to drift from a 5-1 morning line to jump at a dime short of 7-1, locked horns with favored Peace Cruiser (Violence) entering the final furlong of a seven-furlong maiden and fought on to prevail by a neck at first asking Sunday afternoon. The field was away in good order and the well-bred chestnut raced between rivals in the second flight of horses as Tribal Queen (Bolt d'Oro) cut out the fractions in advance of Bisset (Quality Road) over a main track that continued to yield dull times Sunday. Slipstreaming the latter as they approached the stretch, Raging Sea split rivals and set her sights on Peace Cruiser, who was consigned to a three-wide run on the bend, but looked to be going well at the eighth pole. The chalk boxed on strongly and held the advantage deep into the final 100 yards, but Flavien Prat kept busy aboard Raging Sea and drove through underneath to take it by a neck. The winner is a half-sister to Welcoming (Tapit), MSP, $179,812, and a yearling filly by Twirling Candy. Raging Sea shares her second dam–Grade III winner Welcome Surprise (Seeking the Gold)–with GIII Lecomte S. hero Guest Suite (Quality Road), while third dam Weekend Surprise (Secretariat) needs no introduction, having produced the likes of A.P. Indy, Summer Squall and Honor Grades, et al. Stormy Welcome was most recently bred to City of Light. Sales history: $300,000 RNA Ylg '21 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $57,750. More Than Ready Firster Just That at the Spa

1st-Saratoga, $105,000, Msw, 8-7, 2yo, 5 1/2fT, 1:02.50, fm, 2 lengths.
GILCREASE (c, 2, More Than Ready–Indian Brava {SP}, by Bernardini) was let go at longshot odds, owing in large part to an overbet favorite in the form of 3-4 Talkin Pharoah (American Pharoah), and got the Sunday program at Saratoga off to a $54 upset for a barn that can strike with this kind. Showing good speed for this career debut, the dark bay chased from third as Talkin Pharoah argued the pace inside of his stable companion, the filly Scarpia (Union Rags) through an opening quarter mile in a lively :21.17. Chased along by Julien Leparoux from third as they raced around the turn, Gilcrease made ominous headway into contention on the swing for home, was steered out to split the Ward duo with about an eighth of a mile to travel and kicked home to take it by a solid two lengths. Scarpia was an excellent second ahead of Certified Loverboy (Mendelssohn) in third, while Talkin Pharoah retreated to finish last of the octet. Andrea Pollack's operation acquired Gilcrease's stakes-placed dam for $425,000 in foal to Runhappy at Keeneland November in 2017, but this colt is her only live produce. Indian Brava is a daughter of My Juliet S. heroine (103 Beyer) and GI Prioress S. third Indian Way (Indian Charlie)–winner of four of her six career starts–and was most recently covered by Runhappy. Gilcrease is bred on the exact same cross as GI Belmont Derby and GI Travers S. victor Catholic Boy. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $57,750. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

The chestnut is the fourth foal to the races for his dam, winner of the 2013 GI Hollywood Starlet S., whose stakes-winning full-sister Treasuring is the dam of Sweet as Pie (Tapit), third in the Leslie's Lady Overnight S. in June. Streaming is also a half-sister to SW Cascading (A.P. Indy) and to the dam of MGSW and $3.65-million juvenile Cezanne (Curlin). The colt's third dam is $14-million mare Better Than Honour (Deputy Minister), herself responsible for a pair of GI Belmont S. winners and the granddam of MGSW Greatest Honour (Tapit). A Justify colt out of Streaming's daughter Shadowing (Tapit) is cataloged as hip 70 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Monday evening. B-Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings & Stretch Run Ventures LLC (KY)

ESPERANZA FLAG (f, 2, Point of Entry–Place of Honor, by First Samurai) is a full-sister to the dual stakes-placed Hierarchy and was purchased in utero for $70,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale. The filly's second dam is the outstanding My Flag (Easy Goer), whose daughter Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat) won the 2002 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies en route to champion 2-year-old filly honors. This is also the family of dual-surface GSW Parading (Pulpit) as well as SW & GISP Miles D (Curlin). This sire's eight winners from nine to race in Japan includes MGSW/G1SP Lotus Land. B-Crown Farm USA (KY)
